US holds low-key talks with Syria, expresses confidence in leadership

US President Donald Trump held low-key talks at the White House on Nov 10 with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al Qaeda commander who until recently was on Washington's terrorist blacklist and is now trying to end Syria's decades of international isolation.  Trump told the media that he got along well with al-Sharaa and he voiced confidence that the Syrian leader will be able to do the job. 00:28He's a very strong leader.

00:31He comes from a very tough place, and he's a tough guy.

00:36I get along with him, the president, the new president of Syria, and we'll do everything

00:40we can to make Syria successful, because that's part of the Middle East.

00:44We have peace now in the Middle East, first time that anyone can remember that ever happening.

00:48As you know, Syria is a very big part of the Middle East, a very important part.

01:01If you look back at Syria for years, they had the doctors, the lawyers, they had so many

01:07of the great intellects.

01:08It's an amazing place with great people.

01:11And we want to see Syria be successful along with the rest of the Middle East.

01:14So I have confidence that he'll be able to do the job, absolutely.

01:19You can expect some announcements on Syria.

01:21We want to see Syria become a country that's very successful.

01:25And I think this leader can do it, I really do, I think this leader can do it.

01:29And people said he's had a rough past, and we've all had rough pasts.

01:33But he has had a rough past, and I think, frankly, if you didn't have a rough past, you

01:37wouldn't have a chance.

01:39He gets along very well with Turkey, with President Erdogan, who's a great leader.

01:45Erdogan's a great leader, and very much in favor of what's happening in Syria.

01:49We have to make Syria work.

01:50Syria's a big part of the Middle East.

01:53And I will tell you, I think it is working really well.

01:55We're working also with Israel on, you know, getting along with Syria, getting along with

02:00everybody.

02:01And that's working amazingly.
