00:00Trump Blasts Worst Health Care in the World as Senate Stalemate Drags On
00:04President Donald Trump intensified criticism of the Affordable Care Act on Sunday,
00:09calling it the worst health care anywhere in the world as Senate leaders struggled to break
00:14a 39-day stalemate that has left the government partially shut down. The Senate convened over
00:20the weekend, but Majority Leader John Thune's hopes for swift progress faded amid deep partisan
00:25divisions. According to the Associated Press, the prolonged shutdown continues to ripple through
00:30the economy, delaying snap benefits, grounding flights, and leaving hundreds of thousands of
00:36federal workers unpaid. Trump has rejected Democratic demands for a one-year extension
00:41of ACA tax credits, instead suggesting direct cash payments to Americans for purchasing insurance.
00:48Thune clarified that Trump's idea would not be included in any immediate funding deal,
00:53but said the discussion could continue. Republicans, echoing Trump's stance, sharply criticized the ACA.
01:00I guarantee you every day we keep this system in place is a great day for the health care
01:06insurance companies who have been making out literally like bandits every day under Obamacare,
01:11said Senator Lindsey Graham. Democrats countered that repealing the subsidies would leave millions
01:16without coverage. That shouldn't come at the cost of kicking millions off of their health care in
01:21January, said Senator Ron Wyden. Moderate senators, led by Senator Jean Shaheen, are crafting a bipartisan
01:28proposal to reopen the government and schedule a later vote on ACA subsidies. Without congressional
01:34action, premiums for ACA enrollees are expected to more than double next year. Despite talks, Trump remains
01:41opposed to extending the subsidies, and House Speaker Mike Johnson has declined to commit to a vote.
01:46With Republicans still several votes short of the number needed to fund the government,
01:50the impasse could continue into mid-November, unless a compromise emerges in the coming days.
