00:00What to Know on Day 41 of the Government Shutdown
00:03Following a crucial vote late on Sunday in which eight Democrats came together across
00:08party lines to support a deal, the Senate is working to finalize the legislative package
00:13that would end the government shutdown.
00:15John Thune, the majority leader in the Senate, stated to reporters that he expected a final
00:20vote on the package very soon, possibly as early as Monday.
00:24The chamber still needs to overcome several procedural hurdles to finalize the legislation.
00:30And any senator could delay the process.
00:33The final version of the bill will extend government funding through January 2026 and include three
00:39year-long funding bills for various federal agencies and programs.
00:43In exchange for their votes, the eight Democrats secured a commitment that the chamber would
00:47vote by mid-December on extending health care tax credits that have been central to Democrats'
00:52demands.
00:52That angered many in the Democratic base who wanted an extension in the deal itself.
00:58Before the shutdown ends, the bill still needs to be approved by the House and signed by
01:04the President.
01:05In anticipation of a vote later this week, House Speaker Mike Johnson advised members to begin
01:10returning to Washington right now, and Thune stated that he expected the President to sign
01:15the legislation.
01:16Many Democrats are furious about the Senate shutdown deal, and there is little to show for health
01:21care.
01:22The decision by eight Democratic senators to embrace a deal to end the government shutdown
01:27has infuriated many members of the party.
01:29With critics saying the lawmakers abandoned the 40-day fight without serious concessions
01:34on the health care tax credits that were central to Democrats' demands.
01:37Pathetic, Governor of California Gavin Newsom said.
01:41Senior said,
01:43There is no way to defend this, Connecticut's Chris Murphy argued.
01:47Senior, it would be a policy and political disaster for the Democrats to cave, declared
01:53Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who supports Democrats in his caucus.
01:59The reaction is a reflection of the frustration among many Democrats, particularly progressives,
02:04who had urged their party to keep fighting after the strong Democratic performance in last
02:09week's elections.
02:11However, the ongoing cost of the shutdown was ultimately too great for some of the party's
02:16moderate members to bear.
02:18The deal that came out of it has shown the party's cracks, which could carry over into
02:22the coming months and frame the party's internal debate going into the midterm elections primaries
02:27next year.
02:28And it has led some congressional Democrats and progressive groups to call for Senate Minority
02:32leader Chuck Schumer to step down, despite his personal opposition to the agreement.
