00:00Super Typhoon Uwan has weakened into a tropical cyclone category hours after passing through Sierra Madre mountain range.
00:08But does Sierra Madre really weaken Typhoon's impact?
00:12This is a hot topic in social media which started even before Uwan entered in the Philippine area of responsibility.
00:18Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAG-ASA explains that in this Rod Lagusad report.
00:26After the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Uwan, people are once again talking about the role of Sierra Madre in relation to it.
00:35There are many posts on social media including comments from netizens saying that Sierra Madre helped weaken the tropical cyclone.
00:42But is this really true?
00:43It's true that Sierra Madre contributes to the weakening of the wind speed brought about by the tropical cyclone.
00:48But according to PAG-ASA, it is wrong to say that this is the only reason why a tropical cyclone weakens.
00:53Pag-ASA weather specialist John Manal explained that once a tropical cyclone heats the landmass, it already starts to weaken, with Sierra Madre providing additional help.
01:22Because of this, when the tropical cyclone enters land including its interaction with the Sierra Madre and other parts of the zone, it expected to weaken further.
01:30When a tropical cyclone interacts with Sierra Madre, there is a possibility that the eye of the tropical cyclone will be tilted.
01:36Pero that doesn't mean nawala na yung mata ng bagyo. Manunumbalik yan kapag nag-rearrange. Ayusin niya ulit yung kanyang mata.
01:45And then, in short, yung eastern part ay hindi talaga, kasi dun yung direct hit ng bagyo, hindi talaga siya mapoprotektahan unless kung dumaan na siya ng mountain range.
01:56He added that a tropical cyclone weakens even more when it stays longer over land.
02:01However, Manalo clarified that the weakening of a tropical cyclone does not necessarily mean a decrease in the amount of rain pool it can bring.
02:08In the case of Tropical Cyclone 1, its fast movement across Luzon helped reduce the amount of rain it could release.
02:13Rod Legu said, from the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippines.
