Residents of Belém, Brazil, are seeing an unusual sight as large cruise ships dock at the city’s port to accommodate delegates attending the COP30 UN Climate Change Conference. Locals describe the ships as massive and rare visitors, offering a unique glimpse of global climate diplomacy arriving in their city.
While the ships provide much-needed lodging for thousands of delegates, some residents share mixed feelings about the sudden influx of visitors, increased traffic, and impact on local businesses. Others express excitement at being part of a global event and the attention it brings to Belém.
