A boat carrying members of the persecuted Rohingya minority from Myanmar has collapsed near the border between Thailand and Malaysia, leaving at least 11 people confirmed dead and many more missing. According to Malaysian maritime authorities, about 70 people were on board the smaller vessel when it capsized off the coast of Langkawi after departing from the region of Rakhine State in Myanmar. The search, coordinated between Malaysian and Thai agencies, has so far recovered 13 survivors and multiple bodies.
Two of the women found were carrying refugee identification cards linking them to the Rohingya community. The status of another vessel carrying approximately 230 passengers remains uncertain. This tragedy highlights the extreme risks faced by Rohingya migrants fleeing persecution and overcrowded camps in neighbouring Bangladesh and Myanmar. Rescue teams have deployed air and sea assets and expect the operation to continue for up to a week.
