00:30The island of Tenerife experienced one of its most tragic days on Saturday as rough seas
00:35led to multiple incidents along the coast.
00:38Three people lost their lives and a further 15 were injured in different parts of the island.
00:43The Canary Archipelago had been on pre-alert for coastal hazards with warnings of exceptionally
00:48large waves.
00:50The most serious incident occurred in Puerto de la Cruz where 10 people were swept into
00:54the water from a quayside.
00:57One woman was found in cardiorespiratory arrest and was confirmed dead, while three others
01:01suffered critical injuries.
01:05In a separate event, six French tourists fell into water at Taganana after being hit by large
01:10waves.
01:11The lifeless body of another man was found floating in the sea of Granadilla de Abona beach.
01:17Late in the afternoon, a helicopter recovered another man from the sea, but he was confirmed
01:21dead due to his injuries.
01:24Authorities are urging the public to heed warnings as waves have reached up to four meters high.
01:33The U.S. government shutdown continued into its 40th day on Sunday even as senators stayed
01:38in Washington in a grueling and rare weekend session.
01:41The shutdown, over health care funding, has disrupted flights nationwide, left thousands of
01:47federal workers without pay, and threatened food assistance for millions of citizens.
01:52Senate Republicans need to flip five Democrat votes to reopen the government, currently in
01:57the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
02:00Democrats are pushing for an extension of subsidies for health plans offered under the Affordable
02:04Care Act.
02:05Premiums for those enrolled in the act, on average, are expected to double next year if Congress
02:11allows the subsidies to lapse.
02:13Republicans have rejected that offer, and are seeking to halt subsidies offered under
02:17the Obamacare program entirely.
02:20They have, however, signaled openness to a Democrat offer to end the shutdown in exchange
02:24for a later vote on Obamacare subsidies.
02:27Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson, who'll need to ratify this deal, has
02:32stated that he will not commit to a health vote.
02:35U.S. President Donald Trump, who'd be required to sign it after approval from the lower chamber
02:40of Congress, has made it clear that he's unwilling to compromise anytime soon.
02:47Kazakhstan has officially pledged to join the Abraham Accords, a series of U.S. brokered
02:52agreements to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab nations.
02:56During the C5 plus 1 summit in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump secured President
03:01Qasim Jomers Tokayev's commitment in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
03:07The U.S. also finalized a deal granting an American firm rights to develop Kazakhstan's
03:12critical minerals deposits.
03:15President Tokayev expressed support for U.S. peace initiatives, including an infrastructure
03:19corridor connecting mainland Azerbaijan with Nahchivan.
03:23This route will link to the Trans-Caspian Corridor, which connects trade between China and Europe,
03:28while bypassing Russia.
03:30The U.S. and Kazakhstan also signed over 17 billion dollars in new agreements across
03:34mineral resources, digital technologies and aviation.
03:39The U.S. remains Kazakhstan's largest investor, with cumulative investments exceeding 100 billion
03:44dollars.
03:49A massive blackout was observed in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in the northeastern city of
03:53Kharkiv, after Russian forces carried out overnight strikes targeting Ukrainian
03:58energy facilities.
04:00The attacks targeted two major Ukrainian energy providers' infrastructure in the Sumy and
04:05Chernyiv regions, which supply power to multiple cities.
04:10Centronergo, one of Ukraine's largest power companies, said two of its thermal power plants
04:15were struck, which feed energy to the capital in Kharkiv.
04:19Ukronegro also suffered similar attacks, but announced on Sunday morning that power had been
04:24restored in most of the affected regions.
04:28Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiha slammed the attacks, calling them a deliberate Russian
04:32ploy to indirectly harm civilians as winter approaches.
04:36Meanwhile, Ukraine also carried out strikes of its own against Russia's energy sector.
