One-year-old dies after being struck by a freight train

A remote community in New South Wales’ northwest slopes is reeling, following the death of a one-year-old girl who was struck by a freight train last night. Police say the infant was playing with other children at the time near a train track in the town of Baan Baa near Narrabri. Premier Chris Minns has called the accident a 'terrible tragedy'

00:06Our hearts go out to the family of this young girl.

00:10It's a devastating thing for this close-knit community.

00:14Devastation after a one-year-old girl was struck by a freight train about 8 o'clock last night.

00:20We can establish at this stage that the child was with a number of other children,

00:24but those circumstances are still under investigation at the moment.

00:28This is a really tragic case of a child that had gone to play in a bad location.

00:33Paramedics were called and treated her for serious injuries before she was taken to hospital, but later died.

00:39The parents were not in the immediate vicinity, but we are aware of where the parents were,

00:43and the supervision of the child is not in doubt.

00:46Railway safety warning signs had been activated.

00:49The train driver, a 22-year-old man, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

00:54The town of Barn Bar is 130 kilometres northwest of Tamworth.

00:59Its population of about 170 is reeling.

01:03Our community of Barn Bar is such a beautiful town.

01:08And as you can see, this has really been very difficult for this community.

01:14A shocking, shocking death.

01:16The sympathies from everyone in New South Wales is with that family.

01:19What a terrible tragedy.

01:20As investigations continue, police say there's no suggestion that any charges will be laid,

01:25and that support will be offered to the first respondents who attended the scene.

01:29We'll continue to wrap support around them.

01:31Tonight, the local hotel near the track is closed, as this community comes to terms with the loss.
