00:30This is also a year that's seen escalating racial violence in the U.S.
00:35.
00:38In this turbulent climate, the Ku Klux Klan claim they're on the rise.
00:43And they're trying to appeal to the younger generation.
00:47How old are you?
00:48I just turned 20 in March.
00:50I'm currently still in school.
00:52.
00:53.
00:54At its peak, the KKK had an estimated 5 million members.

01:383 membros belonging to the clan I'm filming
01:40are arrested for planning
01:42to kill a black man.
01:44I've come here to find out just
01:46who belongs to the KKK
01:47and if it really is on the rise.
01:58I'm by the banks of the Mississippi River
02:00in the state of Missouri.
02:05A local town called Ferguson
02:06has recently been the focus
02:08of the world's media.
02:11A black youth has just been killed
02:13by a white policeman
02:14which has led to widespread rioting.
02:18Racial tension is high
02:20and the police seem unable
02:21to control the situation.
02:25The local Ku Klux Klan
02:27claim that some of the white population
02:29are turning to them.
02:31I'm getting a lot of feedback.
02:33A lot of people are real upset
02:35about what's going on, you know.
02:36Frank Ancona is the leader
02:39of the traditionalist American Knights,
02:41one of 20 KKK groups in the U.S.
02:44He claims his has the fastest growing membership
02:48and that their hotline is receiving
02:50over 100 calls a day.
02:52I am of the white race.
02:54We are subjected to criminal violence.
02:59Oh, it's non-stop.
03:02After some negotiation,
03:04Frank's invited me to his house.
03:10He's been leading his Klan for six years.
03:13By day, he's a delivery driver
03:18with a passion for heavy metal.
03:21I don't like, you know,
03:22I don't like rap music
03:23because to me it's not,
03:25it's not music.
03:27Frank's not entirely out of touch
03:29with modern culture.
03:30He's built a sophisticated website
03:32which has been attracting attention
03:34since the Ferguson riots.
03:36You get many hits?
03:38Oh, yeah.
03:38The volume is higher
03:40than it's ever been.
03:41In the last six years
03:43that I've been an imperial wizard,
03:44we've had as many
03:45as 50,000 to 100,000 hits in a day.
03:49Frank's website declares
03:50that the white race
03:51must keep itself pure
03:53and regain control of America
03:55from the inferior races.
03:58There's a reason
03:59that God made us separate races
04:00and the white race
04:02is a superior race.
04:04But there appears
04:05to be a contradiction
04:06in Frank's ideology.
04:08You know, we are not,
04:10when we say we're not a hate group,
04:12it's true.
04:13We don't hate people
04:14of other races.
04:15We don't really hear
04:16our members preach
04:17and hatred toward other races.
04:19And most of us are in this
04:21for the fraternal brotherhood
04:22aspect of it
04:23for the most part.
04:24And then why didn't you
04:25have a boots club
04:26or poker club?
04:28Because somebody has to carry this.
04:30on.
04:32The history of the clan
04:34as a hate group
04:34is something that Frank
04:36is keen to shake off.
04:38Perhaps this clan
04:39sees my film
04:40as an ideal PR opportunity.
04:42We're not like the media
04:44tries to betray us.
04:45You know, we're not
04:46the evil monsters
04:47like, you know,
04:48they sometimes say
04:49on some of the documentaries.
04:51Everybody else can speak out
04:52for what they believe in,
04:54but when we do it,
04:55it's, you know,
04:55it's racist
04:56and if that's what
04:56they want to call it,
04:57so be it.
04:59To me, my race
05:00is my family,
05:01so sure,
05:01I'm going to look out
05:02for the interest
05:03of my family first.
05:05The clan's public image
05:06still draws hostility
05:07and Frank's bodyguards,
05:09the Nighthawks,
05:10are needed for protection.
05:12We really usually
05:13don't have much trouble.
05:15You know,
05:15we've been lucky,
05:16but we all are armed,
05:18all Nighthawks
05:19are supposed to be armed.
05:21I stay close
05:21to his lordship here.
05:23I mean,
05:24if there was trouble
05:25with the robe design,
05:27is that going to be a problem?
05:28No.
05:29I can get to it
05:30really quick.
05:31Oh, I see.
05:33Okay.
05:33Frank's told me
05:39his group
05:39has over
05:40two and a half
05:41thousand members
05:41and since the riots
05:43in Ferguson,
05:44he's been seeing
05:44lots more recruits.
05:46I want to see
05:47who these people are.
05:50I'm meeting one
05:51who's rising
05:52through the ranks,
05:5329-year-old John,
05:55who lives with his wife,
05:56Heather,
05:56and their three children.
05:57The clan
06:00needs more security
06:01and John's
06:02just been promoted
06:03to become
06:04one of the Nighthawks.
06:05His new
06:06handmade uniform
06:07has just been delivered.
06:09This one's mine here.
06:11Yep,
06:11just got made
06:12by Sister Linda
06:14in there.
06:14She made it.
06:15A little shardy here.
06:17Quality work.
06:18Oh, really,
06:19really good.
06:19So what does it stand for?
06:20The black?
06:21All the security guys
06:22wear the black ones
06:23only.
06:23Only Nighthawk.
06:25Like whenever
06:25we're having meetings,
06:26I'll stand outside the door
06:27and make sure
06:27nobody comes in
06:28or goes out.
06:31The clan's robes
06:33are iconic.
06:34John's 27-year-old wife,
06:36Heather,
06:37is being measured up
06:38for hers.
06:39She joined
06:40two months ago.
06:42Have you had any
06:42reactions from your
06:43old friends
06:44after joining?
06:45Not so far.
06:47No?
06:47No.
06:48Not so far.
06:49Are you with parents?
06:51Parents don't know.
06:53Ah.
06:54Yeah,
06:54parents don't know.
06:55I want to know
06:59why a young father
07:00like John
07:01joined a year ago.
07:03I've been on
07:04the housing list
07:04for six years.
07:05I've got three
07:06white children,
07:07myself and my wife,
07:08and I work
07:09every single day.
07:10I've been waiting
07:10for six years now
07:11to be assisted
07:13a little bit
07:13by the government,
07:14have a little help.
07:15Nothing.
07:17Our country
07:18just don't care
07:18about us Americans
07:19who built this country.
07:20to hand out
07:22to all the
07:23illegal immigrants.
07:26Doesn't the history
07:27of the Klan
07:28bother you, Heather?
07:29Um,
07:30what the past
07:31was,
07:33like, you know,
07:34the Ku Klux Klan,
07:35people,
07:36you know,
07:37what they used to say
07:37about it,
07:38how horrible it was,
07:39and so,
07:40of course,
07:41I went by
07:42what society thought,
07:43and that's not
07:45at all it,
07:46not even close.
07:47That's the way
07:48I was.
07:49That was exactly
07:50how I was.
07:51I was actually
07:52very hesitant
07:53at first,
07:54and I met everyone
07:55and experienced it all
07:57and realized
07:58how great everybody is,
08:00and it honestly
08:03has helped
08:04my marriage.
08:05Oh, really?
08:06So, yes.
08:06We struggled.
08:08We struggled a lot.
08:08We had a lot of issues.
08:10I've got to go
08:10into what issues
08:11they were,
08:12but we had a lot
08:12of issues,
08:13and now it's great.
08:15I couldn't be happier.
08:17Heather and John's
08:20cozy family
08:21isn't what I expected
08:23of the Klan,
08:24but I'm not sure
08:26I'm seeing
08:26the complete picture.
08:30Make sure we don't
08:31get it upside down now.
08:32Klan members
08:33are expected
08:34to help recruit others,
08:35and I'm meeting
08:36one Klansman
08:37who likes to advertise
08:38in his own front yard.
08:41Rick,
08:41a retired police officer,
08:43is known as
08:43the Grand Kludd.
08:45He's the Klan equivalent
08:46of a Christian chaplain.
08:48Here comes the school bus.
08:55Hello.
08:57White Power.
08:58How are you guys doing?
08:59Pretty good.
09:00How are you doing?
09:01How are you doing?
09:01I've just seen you guys here,
09:03and I figured I wanted
09:04to help spread the message.
09:07Yeah.
09:08Well?
09:08Would you take a picture, please?
09:10You just press that button
09:12right there.
09:13I'm not going to wear the hood
09:15because I'm telling you,
09:16it's hot,
09:17and I don't care
09:18who knows who I am.
09:23No.
09:25I never use the right hand.
09:27That's Nazi.
09:28I don't like that.
09:29Oh.
09:30I don't know much about it,
09:31and I would like to learn more.
09:33I've always supported.
09:35Left hand.
09:41Okay.
09:42Are you interested
09:42in becoming a member?
09:44I'm very well considering it.
09:48I would definitely like
09:49to know more about it
09:51and get to know it, you know?
09:55Let me give you one of my cards.
09:57It has a website
09:58where you can go to
09:59and give you instructions
10:01on what you need to do.
10:02All right.
10:03Well, goodbye, sir.
10:05Goodbye.
10:07Have a nice white day.
10:09Have a white day.
10:13Do you think he's
10:14a good candidate?
10:16We'll find out.
10:18But he's young, isn't he?
10:19He's young.
10:20Yeah, he's young.
10:22He may be dumb, too.
10:24I don't know.
10:26But we'll find out.
10:27I'm realising how nervous
10:29the Klan are
10:30about their public image.
10:32The young man's Nazi salute
10:33could have been a PR disaster.
10:36I'm telling him don't do that
10:37because we're on television.
10:40I would hope you would edit that.
10:44With all these new members,
10:46I imagine a production line
10:48of Klan tailors,
10:50but it's just Linda.
10:53She's married to Rick,
10:54the grand Klud.
10:55He persuaded Linda to join
10:57three years ago
10:58and helps her make
11:00the traditional hoods.
11:03I was impressed
11:04with their ideals,
11:06what they wanted to do,
11:08and I wanted to be a part of it,
11:13you know.
11:14Plus, you know,
11:15it made Rick and I
11:17closer in our relationship.
11:19and so I wasn't going to pass up
11:23on that, you know.
11:24She didn't want to be
11:25sitting on the couch.
11:27Yeah, I didn't want to be
11:28left at home
11:29sitting by myself all the time.
11:31Okay, now we're going to get
11:33to the eyes here
11:34on this mask.
11:35Okay.
11:36That's the kind of thing
11:37you can't get wrong,
11:37isn't it, I suppose?
11:38That's why I let him do it.
11:40Because of her hands, Jake.
11:41This guy's got a little head.
11:45I've got the big head.
11:47You've got to put a string
11:48in your eye.
11:48Right there.
11:51I'll have to cut it off.
11:53Okay.
11:56Is that better?
11:58That's a bit better.
11:59It's less stringy anyway.
12:01That's better.
12:01I've been with the Klan
12:08for two weeks
12:09and I'm still trying
12:10to understand
12:11what they truly represent.
12:13I'm going to a secret location
12:15deep in the woods
12:16to find out more.
12:19Frank, their leader,
12:21has gathered his people
12:22for an important message
12:23about the escalating violence
12:25in Ferguson.
12:26You have a bunch
12:28of wild savages
12:29running the streets
12:30that just angers me
12:32and it should anger everybody
12:34because it's not only
12:35black savages,
12:36there's white savages
12:37out there,
12:38godless, lawless criminals.
12:41We're not going to be quiet.
12:42We're not going to start riding
12:43until we get peace.
12:46Frank tells his Klan
12:47they can defend themselves
12:49with lethal force.
12:51I'm finally seeing
12:53the other side of this Klan.
12:56Big smile.
13:00I've spent a month
13:02with the Missouri chapter
13:03of the Ku Klux Klan
13:04who are actively recruiting
13:06during this period
13:07of racial unrest
13:08in Ferguson.
13:09This Klan,
13:11the traditionalist
13:11American Knights,
13:13claim to be
13:13the fastest growing
13:14in America.
13:15I want to find out
13:16if they really are
13:17on the rise
13:18and who joins
13:19an organization
13:20promoting white supremacy.
13:23Is it what you expected?
13:25It's actually been better
13:25than I expected.
13:26I believe in the cause
13:29and it's something
13:30I can relate to.
13:32They've given me
13:33surprising access
13:34to their secretive world.
13:38Tonight,
13:39I'm being allowed
13:40to see their infamous
13:41cross-burning ceremony.
13:44Klan members travel miles
13:45to see this event.
13:47How far did you come
13:48today to be here?
13:49It was about a six-hour drive,
13:52about 400 miles.
13:53Wow.
13:54But it's worth it.
13:57We enjoy what we do.
13:58We're not bad
13:59like everybody thinks
14:00we are, you know.
14:02Do you have a partner?
14:04Is she in the Klan?
14:05She's not in, no.
14:07She agrees with what I do,
14:08but no, she doesn't...
14:09She doesn't have anything
14:10to do with it, you know.
14:14She's not Klan material,
14:16I'll say.
14:17Really?
14:17Yeah.
14:21I'm still curious
14:22to know what draws people
14:24into the Klan.
14:26Could a part of it
14:26be the rituals
14:27and grand titles,
14:29such as exalted cyclops,
14:31imperial dragon,
14:33and grand goblin?
14:37Frank, their leader,
14:38is about to announce
14:39he's won a new title.
14:41Greetings
14:42to all hydras of realms,
14:46clegals of domains,
14:48grand titans,
14:49and furies of provinces,
14:51giants,
14:51exalted cyclops,
14:52and terrors of cantons,
14:54and to all citizens
14:55of the invisible empire
14:57of the Ku Klux Klan.
14:59In the name
14:59of our valiant
15:00and venerated dead,
15:02I affectionately greet you.
15:04Klansmen,
15:05do we believe in our cause?
15:07Yes.
15:08I see that the Klan
15:11enables people
15:12to escape
15:12their ordinary lives.
15:14Where else
15:15can a delivery driver
15:16like Frank
15:17transform himself
15:18into an imperial wizard?
15:22Or a landscaped gardener
15:24like Jeff
15:25become a grand dragon?
15:27Brother,
15:27now you are
15:28appointed grand dragon
15:30for the realm
15:30of Kentucky, Tennessee.
15:32Thank you.
15:32Thank you.
15:38If I could have
15:41the acting grand dragon
15:43for the realm
15:44of Alabama
15:44come forward.
15:47I dub thee
15:48the grand dragon
15:49for the realm
15:50of Alabama.
15:56So what's this award for?
15:58For grand dragon.
16:00We're the state leaders now.
16:02I'm over Kentucky
16:03and he's over Alabama.
16:04Okay.
16:05What can you do
16:07with that's difficult?
16:07What does it mean?
16:08Well, it's just
16:09something we'll hang
16:11on our wall
16:11and our claverns.
16:12Just that way,
16:13frame it,
16:14you know,
16:14something to be proud of.
16:16Yeah.
16:16Mm-hmm.
16:17You've got two
16:18very proud members here.
16:20I expect them to go back
16:21and lead the men
16:22in their states
16:23that they come from.
16:26I've actually got
16:27four members,
16:29possibly five,
16:30that we're going
16:30to be naturalizing
16:31here next month.
16:33Oh, really?
16:33So, yeah.
16:35We're trying
16:35and we're doing it.
16:36I mean,
16:36we're growing
16:37every day.
16:38It takes time,
16:39but we are growing.
16:41Can you always
16:45be depended on?
16:46Yes.
16:46Naturalization
16:47is the ceremony
16:48where new recruits
16:49are formally accepted
16:50into the clan.
16:54Once in,
16:55they'll need
16:56a made-to-measure
16:56hood and robe.
16:57Now, the polyester satin
17:01is a lot easier
17:02to work with.
17:04When I first started,
17:06I had a standard width
17:09I put between
17:10the two eyes.
17:11Yes.
17:12And then people
17:12were calling up
17:13and said,
17:14they're too far apart,
17:16I can't see.
17:17Mm-hmm.
17:23Work goes on
17:24until dusk.
17:25I want to know
17:26why head tailor Linda
17:27is so devoted.
17:29There was something
17:30in my life
17:31that was missing
17:32and when I joined
17:33the clan,
17:34I felt fulfilled.
17:36Can you put your finger
17:37on what was missing?
17:39Uh,
17:40I guess in the past
17:43I always felt insecure
17:46and inferior
17:47to other people
17:49and this,
17:51now,
17:51I feel like
17:52I'm equal.
17:53Fifteen.
17:54Fifteen.
17:55Helping to measure up
17:56recruits
17:57is new member Heather.
17:58She's here to see
17:59her first cross-burning
18:00ceremony
18:01with her husband John.
18:04Johnny,
18:05can you remember
18:05your first day,
18:06your first cross-burning?
18:07Oh, yeah.
18:08It was here.
18:09It was here?
18:09Yep, it was here.
18:10What did it feel like to you?
18:11Oh, it was amazing.
18:13Can't even explain it
18:14until you witnessed it.
18:15Really?
18:15It was the best feeling
18:16in the world, yeah.
18:17Everybody around
18:17watching it all lit up.
18:19Can you remember
18:20the emotion?
18:20Can you put a finger on it?
18:21Kind of what sort of feelings?
18:24Kind of like tingling feelings
18:25just through my whole body.
18:26Everybody was silenced,
18:27just watching the cross on fire
18:29and it was just,
18:31can't even explain it in words,
18:32just tingling through
18:33all your whole body.
18:37There's an air of expectancy
18:39and excitement
18:39with the cross-burning ceremony
18:41drawing closer.
18:48It's time to get dressed up.
18:50But the polyester robes
18:51are highly flammable
18:52so they get an all-important
18:54health and safety briefing.
18:56Do not turn your back
18:57on the cross, ever.
18:59But you keep your arm out like this,
19:01keep the torch straight out,
19:02stay six feet apart
19:03from your next clancy.
19:05If you've got a knot
19:06in your belt,
19:08undo it.
19:09In case you get in trouble,
19:10you can get that belt off,
19:12get that robe off
19:13as quick as possible.
19:14and someone will come
19:15to help you.
19:22Forward, march!
19:25Follow my lead.
19:27For my God!
19:28For my God!
19:30For my country!
19:31For my country!
19:33For my clan!
19:34For my clan!
19:36For my family!
19:37For my family!
19:38The burning of the cross
19:40lies at the heart
19:42of clan tradition.
19:44It's a ritual few outsiders
19:45are ever allowed to witness.
19:50I've been told that the fire
19:52symbolises their faith in Christ,
19:54but it's also known
19:56for a more sinister reason.
19:59Throughout the clan's history,
20:01the burning cross
20:02was often used
20:03to terrorise African Americans
20:04and lit outside their homes
20:06as a death threat.
20:09Between 1877 and 1950,
20:12the KKK was part
20:13of a US network
20:14of white supremacists
20:16responsible for the murder
20:18of around 4,000
20:19black men,
20:20women and children.
20:30Raise us up once again
20:32to be that great nation.
20:33God bless America
20:35and God bless
20:36the traditionalist
20:37American knights
20:38of the Ku Klux Klan.
20:41So how was that
20:42for you, Heather?
20:43It was great.
20:44It was great.
20:44It was very spiritual.
20:46Very moving, yes.
20:48What were you thinking about
20:49when you looked at the cross?
20:51My mind was blank.
20:52Just gazing at the cross.
20:55Really?
20:55Yes.
20:56It was pretty intense.
20:58Pretty awesome.
21:01I can't wait to do it again.
21:03As the flames on the Klan cross
21:07die out,
21:08the fires on the streets
21:09of Ferguson are raging.
21:13The police are struggling
21:15to control the unrest.
21:18A new media opportunity
21:20presents itself
21:21to Imperial Wizard Frank.
21:23He prepares a statement
21:24warning the rioters.
21:26attention to the terrorists
21:33masquerading as
21:34peaceful protesters.
21:36You've awakened
21:36a sleeping giant.
21:38We will use
21:39lethal force
21:40as provided
21:41under Missouri law
21:43to defend ourselves.
21:45You have been warned
21:46by the Ku Klux Klan.
21:47This is what our remedy is
21:48under the law
21:49to defend ourselves.
21:51and then we put
21:52for more information
21:54about setting up
21:55a neighborhood watch
21:57and we put our phone number
21:59and website up.
22:03Frank's call to action
22:05needs to be packaged
22:06for delivery.
22:07How are you getting back here?
22:09It's real simple.
22:11We take the pliers
22:12and we put them
22:13in a plastic bag
22:14and then we toss them
22:16in the driveways
22:17and they'll stay there
22:18all night
22:19and they'll go out
22:19and pick them up.
22:21Good morning.
22:22The Klan's around.
22:24Save their land
22:25and join the Klan.
22:27Amen.
22:28Amen.
22:29I'm all pumped up,
22:31fired up,
22:31ready to get these
22:32distributed out
22:33to the community
22:34and hopefully they
22:35give us a call
22:36and do the right thing.
22:42The leaflet drop
22:44is carried out
22:44while the city sleeps.
22:49It should be a nice
22:51successful night.
22:53We're hoping.
22:55Doors are open.
22:57All right,
22:58when we get up to here,
22:59Harley,
22:59you guys go ahead
23:00and hit them both
23:00simultaneously,
23:01left and right.
23:10Car, hold off.
23:12During the day,
23:16John works as a lumberjack,
23:18but I'm told
23:19he's also spent
23:20some time in prison.
23:22What were you doing
23:23before you joined
23:24the time, John?
23:27Uh,
23:29not really much
23:30or nothing.
23:30Doing a lot of drinking,
23:32a lot of partying,
23:33nothing successful.
23:36I had my kids
23:37and my wife,
23:38but I just really
23:40wasn't in the right
23:41frame of mind.
23:43I didn't really
23:43have a sense of belonging
23:44until I joined the Klan
23:45and then that kind of
23:47changed everything
23:47around for me.
23:49Get out and do
23:50more things productive.
23:52Got stuff to look
23:52forward to other
23:53than going out
23:54and partying
23:54and throwing my life
23:55away.
23:56At least I can do
23:56something productive.
24:02Oh, shit.
24:05The next morning,
24:06the Klan's leaflet drop
24:07is the talk of the town.
24:08Letters were tossed
24:10into driveways
24:11and lawns
24:12and baggies
24:12with rocks
24:13to weigh them down.
24:14Mark,
24:14when people here
24:15woke up on Monday
24:15morning,
24:16they were greeted
24:16with hundreds
24:17of flyers like this
24:18one bearing
24:18a disturbing message.
24:20The Klan is awake.
24:22There's also a response
24:23from the streets
24:24of Ferguson.
24:26KKK,
24:27inside,
24:27they want to come
24:28up here with
24:29that bullshit.
24:30Come on,
24:31KKK.
24:32Come on.
24:33Please come on.
24:34We've been waiting
24:35on this.
24:36Come on.
24:36We're going to take you
24:38down in a joint
24:39on the streets
24:40or whatever
24:41because you know
24:41we run everything.
24:43You fuck around
24:44and you're going
24:44to get fucked around.
24:47I've been filming
24:48Imperial Wizard Frank,
24:50leader of the
24:51traditionalist
24:51American Knights,
24:53which claims to be
24:54the fastest growing
24:55KKK group
24:56in the US.
24:57He sent a warning
24:58to the rioters
24:59in Ferguson
24:59and has now
25:00received death threats.
25:02He's heard
25:13there's even
25:13a bounty on his head
25:14and I want to know
25:16what precautions
25:16he's taking.
25:18We've got security cameras
25:20so that we've got
25:20a view of everything
25:22around the house.
25:25So you are
25:26a little bit concerned?
25:27Well this way
25:29we can record
25:30if anybody
25:31you know
25:32because nobody's
25:33going to do anything
25:34while I'm here
25:35but maybe
25:36if they don't think
25:36somebody's not here.
25:42But there's
25:43another threat.
25:44Frank's website
25:45is under cyber attack.
25:47KKK it has
25:49came to our
25:50unfortunate attention
25:51that you have
25:52been interfering
25:53with Anonymous.
25:55We are attacking
25:57you because
25:58of your threats
25:59to use lethal
26:00attacks against
26:01us at the
26:02Ferguson protests.
26:04You messed
26:04with our family
26:05and now
26:06we will mess
26:07with yours.
26:08Anything you upload
26:09will be taken
26:10down.
26:11Anything you use
26:12to promote
26:13the KKK
26:14will be shut
26:15down.
26:17Anonymous
26:19are an
26:20international
26:20activist group
26:21that have
26:22hacked major
26:23organisations
26:23including
26:24the Church
26:25of Scientology
26:26and ISIS.
26:29Anonymous
26:30have attacked
26:30Frank's clan
26:31by hacking
26:32the Facebook
26:33accounts of
26:33members
26:34and publishing
26:35them online.
26:37Public exposure
26:38of their personal
26:39details
26:39has placed
26:40them in real
26:41danger.
26:43Ku Klux Klan
26:44you should have
26:45expected us.
26:46let the
26:47cyber war
26:48begin.
26:50Even Frank's
26:51bodyguards
26:52seem rattled.
26:54There's a degree
26:55of fear
26:55I've not seen
26:56before.
26:58It could be
26:59anywhere you know
27:00you could be
27:00on your job
27:01it could be
27:02in the grocery
27:02store they
27:03could follow
27:03you.
27:05You just
27:05kind of have
27:06to be aware
27:07of your
27:07surroundings
27:07just all
27:08the time.
27:09It's a genuine
27:10threat do you
27:10think?
27:10I take
27:14everything as
27:15a genuine
27:15threat you
27:16know since
27:16I'm head of
27:17security I
27:17have to
27:18I have to
27:19take it as
27:20a threat
27:20it concerns
27:22our brothers
27:22and sisters.
27:24Some members
27:24are so scared
27:25they've decided
27:26to quit the
27:27clan for good.
27:27what's sad
27:29about it
27:30is we lost
27:32some good
27:32members
27:33on account
27:34of their
27:34idle threats
27:36that you
27:37know it
27:38scared some
27:39people it's
27:40because of
27:41their families.
27:42They're nothing
27:42but a bunch
27:43of scumbags
27:44that's the way
27:45I see them.
27:46And what did
27:47they do
27:47exactly?
27:48Well they got
27:48in they hacked
27:49our website
27:52and it was
27:54down I mean
27:54they shut
27:55us completely
27:56down and
27:57and we had
27:58to exit
27:59to where
28:00they won't
28:00get in it
28:00no more.
28:02Sooner or
28:02later they're
28:04all going to
28:06meet their
28:06fate.
28:11Some of
28:12those who've
28:12left were
28:13recent recruits.
28:17John and
28:17his wife
28:18Heather fear
28:19for their
28:19three children
28:20and have
28:21reluctantly
28:21hung up
28:21their hoods.
28:22Who are
28:23the people
28:24behind the
28:25anonymous
28:25mark?
28:25Well I have
28:26no idea
28:26that's why
28:27it's called
28:27anonymous.
28:28We never
28:28will know.
28:30We never
28:30will know.
28:32Do you have
28:32theory of who
28:33it might be?
28:34Yeah possibly.
28:36Yeah possibly
28:37got theory but
28:37it don't matter
28:39it's just a
28:40bunch of group
28:40of anarchists.
28:43They're communists.
28:44Just like in
28:45China, just like
28:46in Russia,
28:46they're communists,
28:47anarchists.
28:48My children
28:49were even put
28:50on the internet.
28:52Were they?
28:52Yeah.
28:53Their face
28:53was scratched out
28:54with permanent
28:55marker but
28:55if you know
28:56me you know
28:56they were my
28:57children.
28:58Which is a scary
29:00thought.
29:02Anybody that's
29:03going to attack
29:03someone that has
29:04three children
29:05to my opinion
29:06is a piece of
29:06shit.
29:07There will be
29:07repercussions.
29:09I'm speaking for
29:09the white man
29:10and the white race.
29:11Our heritage
29:12are our next
29:12generation.
29:13We ain't got much
29:14longer to live
29:15but this is the
29:15future of the
29:16white race.
29:16That's what we
29:21live for our
29:21kids, our race,
29:23our generation.
29:25We may have
29:26some downfalls
29:27but this has been
29:28a white man's
29:29country for
29:29300 years.
29:31So why should
29:32somebody else
29:33come in and
29:33change it?
29:39Although death
29:40threats have
29:40scared many Ku Klux
29:42Klan members
29:42away, Grand
29:44Klud Rick refuses
29:45to be intimidated.
29:47I'm not here
29:48to harm people.
29:50I'm not going
29:52to let somebody
29:52come here and
29:53harm me.
29:58It's part of
29:59my history, sir.
30:01It's part of
30:01my history.
30:03I'm not giving
30:04it up to anybody
30:05and they're not
30:06going to erase it.
30:10Rick's told me
30:11that some of his
30:12relatives were
30:13members when the
30:13Klan was at its
30:14most popular.
30:15in the 1920s.
30:19At that time,
30:20it's estimated
30:21that one in seven
30:22white Americans
30:23belonged to the
30:24KKK.
30:26Klan influence
30:27went right to the
30:28heart of the
30:28White House.
30:29It's rumored that
30:30a number of
30:31presidents were
30:31members.
30:33Rick's grandfather
30:34was a highly
30:35decorated Klansman.
30:37I don't share
30:38this with a lot
30:39of people.
30:39So that's from
30:411920.
30:42Yes.
30:44I'm fifth generation
30:45Klansman.
30:46Mm-hmm.
30:48How does that make
30:49you feel that,
30:50you know,
30:51your grandfather
30:52may have been
30:53involved in
30:54lynchings like me?
30:55I like it.
30:58Right.
30:59I like it.
30:59Why do you like it?
31:01Because it's a part
31:02of my heritage.
31:07I mean...
31:08What about the
31:08innocent lives that
31:10were lost?
31:12Surely it bothers you
31:13a bit?
31:14Um...
31:14I didn't do it.
31:19It's just,
31:20it's difficult for me
31:20to quantify because
31:21I...
31:21Yeah.
31:22You know,
31:23I've got to know
31:24you quite a bit.
31:25Yeah.
31:25And your outlook
31:27is not one of
31:28hate, you say.
31:30It's not.
31:31No, but then
31:31being proud of
31:33your grandfather
31:34that may have
31:35lynched someone,
31:36is it odds with...
31:37I don't think he
31:38lynched anybody
31:39that I know of.
31:40You don't know
31:41half of what you
31:42think, you know.
31:43about us.
31:49It's true,
31:50there is a lot
31:51I don't understand
31:51about them.
31:53On the one hand,
31:53they claim to be
31:54a peaceful Christian
31:55group.
31:56On the other,
31:57some of them
31:58celebrate a murderous
31:59past.
32:00Even in recent times,
32:02there have been
32:03savage killings
32:04committed by
32:04clansmen.
32:07One shocking
32:08murder took place
32:09in 1998.
32:11I've come to
32:12Jasper, Texas,
32:13where it happened.
32:15And a very good
32:16morning to you.
32:17This is the news
32:17for Thursday.
32:18Currently outside
32:19right now,
32:20we have 65 degrees
32:21in Jasper.
32:22Not much fog out
32:23there this morning,
32:24just a little bit
32:24of a mist,
32:25so drive carefully.
32:27The first report
32:29of the murder
32:29was broadcast
32:30on local radio.
32:31A woman called in
32:33from the Huff Creek
32:36community and said,
32:37please pray for
32:39everyone here
32:40in the Huff Creek
32:41community.
32:43My neighbor found
32:45a man's head
32:46in her driveway.
32:50And that turned out
32:51later to be
32:52James Byrd,
32:53the remains of his body.
32:55The reason why his murder
32:59shocked the world
33:00was the horrific way
33:02it was committed.
33:05This truck was used
33:07to drag James Byrd,
33:08Jr. to his death.
33:14He was chained
33:16by his feet
33:16and dragged
33:18for three miles
33:19along this road.
33:22One of the first
33:23on the scene
33:24was former sheriff
33:25of Jasper,
33:27Billy Rowles.
33:28For every step,
33:29I'm going,
33:30oh, Lord.
33:31Oh, Lord.
33:33Oh, Lord.
33:34This ain't good.
33:35This ain't good.
33:38Now this right here,
33:41right here,
33:42is when I started
33:43seeing the black
33:44mark in the road.
33:46The dark-colored
33:46spot in the road
33:48that took off
33:49like these little lines
33:50in the road
33:51right there,
33:51you can see.
33:52But can you imagine
33:53being drugged
33:53in the middle of this road
33:55all this way?
33:56And the doctor thinks
33:57he was still conscious
33:58because his elbows,
34:00the way the road
34:01ground the elbows
34:02down into the bone
34:03and where the bone
34:04wasn't even just
34:05mush on both elbows.
34:08and his tailbone,
34:11his tailbone,
34:13you can see where
34:14he had tried
34:15to go this way
34:16and relieve,
34:17get a little,
34:18go this way,
34:19trying to shift
34:20his body weight around.
34:23Excruciating pain.
34:24My God,
34:25I can't imagine
34:26what he was going through.
34:27The clan perpetrators
34:33and one accomplice
34:34dumped James' body
34:36outside a black church,
34:38knowing the parishioners
34:39would find it
34:40the next morning.
34:41I've come to Jasper's
34:48Lone Star Baptist Church.
34:50James Bird Jr.
34:51was part of this community
34:52and sang in the choir.
34:54The preacher here,
35:09Reverend Lyons,
35:10knew him well
35:11and led the funeral service.
35:13Can you remember
35:16the day that you had
35:18the news about
35:19James Bird?
35:21Yes,
35:22I remember vividly.
35:25It was on Sunday morning.
35:29We were all in Sunday school.
35:31The first news we heard
35:33was a young man
35:35had been dragged
35:38on the Huff Creek Road.
35:40It was a shock
35:43to all of us
35:44and especially
35:46to the family.
35:50And opening up
35:52not only
35:53the eyes of Jasper,
35:56but the eyes of the world
35:58of what
36:02what he can do.
36:07That man was dragged
36:09down the road.
36:13What human being?
36:18I'm a human being.
36:20You're a human being.
36:23How can we come
36:23to the point
36:24of dragging
36:25another human being
36:26to his death?
36:30James's murderers
36:31were hoping
36:32to start a race war,
36:34but were arrested
36:35the next day.
36:36John William King
36:38is on death row
36:39awaiting execution.
36:41Lawrence Russell Brewer
36:42was executed
36:43in 2011.
36:46The other accomplice,
36:47Sean Allen Berry,
36:49is serving a life sentence.
36:50Captain James Carter
37:00assisted the sheriff
37:01at the scene
37:02of the murder.
37:03He was a close friend
37:04of James Burr, Jr.
37:05He took me
37:06to see his grave.
37:08That is it.
37:09to see his grave.
37:10He was a close friend
37:11of the murder.
37:11He was a close friend
37:12of the murder.
37:12He was a close friend
37:13of the murder.
37:14You know,
37:14some things you'll never forget
37:15and that's one of them.
37:18See him one day
37:18walking down the road
37:19and the next day
37:21you're going out
37:21on the crime scene
37:22and never forget
37:26going to,
37:28trying to identify
37:28who it were.
37:31Long walk up
37:32to that doorstep
37:33to tell the parents
37:34that their beloved son
37:37was deceased
37:38harbor.
37:43Harbor.
37:46You just got to learn
37:48to stay positive yourself.
37:53When I've been
37:54with the Klan recently
37:55and they tell me
37:56that they're men of peace
37:58and they're here
37:58to protect.
38:00How do you feel
38:01when you hear that?
38:03Terrible.
38:06Just terrible.
38:07I mean,
38:08hatred,
38:09hatred,
38:10hatred is,
38:11is,
38:12you see it right now
38:14that we live around it
38:15every day
38:16and this is what
38:17can happen
38:18at the blink of an eye
38:20if you go down
38:21the wrong path.
38:25It's been seven months
38:26since I started filming
38:27the traditionalist
38:28American Nights.
38:30They maintain
38:30they're the fastest
38:31growing KKK group
38:33in America
38:33but their recruitment
38:35drive stalled
38:36when the hacker group
38:37Anonymous
38:37posted their secret
38:39membership list online.
38:41The exposure
38:42has been a PR disaster
38:44for their leader
38:45Imperial Wizard Frank.
38:47I'm here to visit Frank
38:49who's still promoting
38:50his group
38:51as a non-hate organization.
38:54I want to ask him
38:56where he really stands
38:57for white supremacy.
39:01Do you like Hendrix?
39:03Oh yeah, yeah.
39:04I do.
39:06It doesn't matter
39:07that he's
39:07a black man.
39:09Nah.
39:09Nice.
39:10I didn't join
39:12because I hate
39:13black people.
39:14We are all human beings.
39:17We all have emotions
39:18and things like that
39:19but I don't think
39:20that we're all
39:21exactly the same.
39:23I mean
39:23even you all
39:26being from England
39:26me being from
39:27the United States
39:28we're different.
39:29You know
39:29but there's no reason
39:31to dislike each other
39:32over it.
39:33It's what makes
39:34things interesting
39:35actually.
39:35Frank shows me
39:37a photo
39:38of a black friend.
39:40Me and Daryl
39:41of course
39:42don't agree
39:42on a lot of things
39:43as far as
39:44the racial separation
39:45but I think
39:45he understands
39:46that the traditionalist
39:47Americanites
39:47is not a group
39:48that's out to harm
39:50blacks or any other race.
39:52Right
39:52but the Klan
39:53does have a history
39:54of violence
39:55doesn't it Frank?
39:56From past Klan groups
39:58yes
39:58but ran properly
40:00it's not an organization
40:02that's about hate.
40:03Ha ha!
40:04Ever since I started filming
40:08Frank's insisted
40:09that his Klan
40:10is a non-hate group
40:11but soon after
40:14I left him
40:14a shocking news story
40:16broke.
40:17Three men
40:18belonging to Frank's Klan
40:19have been arrested
40:21in Florida
40:21for conspiring
40:22to murder a black man.
40:25Three suspected
40:26KKK members
40:27are in jail tonight
40:28in northeast Florida.
40:29These three
40:30corrections officers
40:31face charges
40:32for conspiracy
40:33to commit murder.
40:35We have team coverage
40:35on this elaborate plot
40:37to kill a former inmate.
40:39Catherine
40:39wow.
40:41I want to find out
40:43what the Klan's reaction
40:44is to this news.
40:46I'm getting a lift
40:46to their national meeting
40:47at another secret location.
40:50Ha ha ha!
40:51I'm being led to see Frank.
40:54Surely these recent arrests
40:55challenge his vision
40:57of a peace-loving Klan.
40:59People see you
41:00as the face
41:01of this Klan
41:02and if someone
41:03does something like that
41:04then it sort of
41:05makes a joke
41:05out of
41:06your preaching
41:08of a non-hate organization
41:09doesn't it?
41:10That's what
41:10they would like
41:12to try to do
41:13but...
41:13This sort of does
41:14doesn't it
41:14if you associate yourself
41:16with these people
41:16it sort of does.
41:17I don't think it does
41:19because that's not
41:20what we teach.
41:22That's not what
41:23we're about.
41:25I mean have you
41:26heard anything
41:26here that would
41:28make someone
41:30leave here
41:31and want to go out
41:31and commit a criminal act?
41:33There's always going
41:34to be those people
41:35who are
41:35they're going to believe
41:36what they want to believe
41:37and the facts
41:38can be right in front of them
41:39and they're still
41:41not going to believe it.
41:42It's just you have
41:43a slightly impossible task.
41:45Yeah I don't see it that way.
41:46I believe what God
41:47at all things are possible.
41:50This news must be
41:51a major blow
41:52to Frank's PR campaign
41:54to distance his group
41:55from racial violence
41:56and hate.
41:58He's keen to reassure me
41:59and his members
42:01that this is just
42:02an isolated incident.
42:06I just want to thank
42:08everybody for being here.
42:10I love every one of you.
42:12I'm proud to serve
42:13with every one of you.
42:14I was asked a question
42:15about this situation
42:16in Florida.
42:18Every organization
42:19has bad people.
42:20Those bad people
42:21will be removed
42:22from our midst.
42:23That's what's going on
42:24here right now.
42:25Those who are not worthy
42:27are being cast out.
42:28The clan is dismissed
42:29until dusk.
42:33Ladies and gentlemen
42:34this is the last call
42:36for raffle tickets.
42:37Here's one of them.
42:39Some lucky winner.
42:40I've met up with Rick
42:41who's putting the finishing
42:43touches to a raffle prize.
42:45Now I'm going to put it
42:46over the army.
42:49She's backed by popular demand.
42:52But what about the arrests
42:53in Florida, Rick?
42:54You can't make everybody
42:55responsible for a couple,
42:58two or three people's actions.
43:00I mean...
43:01But they were clansmen,
43:02weren't they?
43:02They were, but you know,
43:04I don't know
43:06if I would have called
43:06them clansmen
43:07if they were practicing that.
43:10And I guarantee you
43:11if we would have knew
43:11anything about it,
43:13I would have stopped it.
43:14I would have stopped it.
43:15You would, yeah?
43:16Yes, I would have.
43:17I would have stopped it.
43:19Believe me,
43:19that's not what it's all
43:20about here.
43:22People need to get
43:23the right perception
43:24of us,
43:25and they don't need
43:27to think that we're all bad.
43:30because I don't want
43:32nobody being harmed in this.
43:34People need to understand
43:35this is not a black thing
43:37with me.
43:38This is not one
43:39of these things
43:39where everybody thinks
43:42that we get drunk
43:43on a Saturday night
43:44and get up in all our regalia
43:46and go out and try
43:48to hang a few people
43:49in the trees.
43:50We haven't killed anybody.
43:52I haven't anyway.
43:53I have no intentions.
43:55I guess so.
43:55It's just, you know,
43:56having the hangman's noose
43:57on your...
43:58Well, that's...
43:59that's a symbol.
44:01Because if you want
44:01to get past it,
44:02then it'd be better
44:04not to have those symbols,
44:05wouldn't it, surely?
44:06Not really.
44:07It's just...
44:08I just...
44:09I wouldn't say that.
44:11No, I wouldn't say that.
44:16The clan seem
44:17to be taking things
44:18in their stride
44:19and carrying on
44:20as normal.
44:22All right,
44:23ladies and gentlemen,
44:25get your tickets out!
44:27Our first prize
44:29is the Red Mug Rug!
44:32What is the Red Mug Rug?
44:34That's one of these.
44:35It's like a coaster
44:37for your coffee cup
44:38when you drink coffee
44:39in the morning.
44:40And the winner is...
44:43Five...
44:44Six...
44:45Seven...
44:46One...
44:47One...
44:48Nine...
44:49Nine...
44:50Seven...
44:50One...
44:51One...
44:51One...
44:52Nine...
44:52Nine...
44:52Seven...
44:53One...
44:53One...
44:54Nine...
44:54One...
44:55One...
44:56One...
44:57One...
44:58One...
44:59One...
45:00Five...
45:01Six...
45:02Seven...
45:03Zero...
45:04Seven...
45:05Seven...
45:06Seven...
45:07Seven...
45:08Seven...
45:09Seven...
45:10Yay!
45:12Given the recent arrest
45:13of three members
45:14for conspiracy to murder,
45:16I wasn't expecting
45:17to see new recruits arriving.
45:19And what convinced you to join?
45:21I've always agreed with
45:24the morals and the values
45:27that the Klan associates with
45:31ever since I was growing up,
45:33and I didn't see a reason not to.
45:36And so I need to ask,
45:37how old are you?
45:38I just turned 20 in March.
45:40Right.
45:41I'm currently still in school,
45:43and that I feel should be a priority.
45:45But I do plan on helping whenever and wherever I can.
45:49And how did you hear about the TAK, this Klan?
45:53My father is previously a member.
45:55Uh-huh.
45:56Currently.
45:57Currently a member.
45:58Are you proud of her today, then?
46:00I'm proud of her on a regular basis.
46:02It reassures me that if I'm not around,
46:07that she'll be okay.
46:09What about those three members in Florida
46:12that have just been arrested?
46:13What do you think about them?
46:15It is very disappointing,
46:17and there is always going to be
46:19good and black people of many...
46:21Good and bad people, sorry.
46:23Of many races.
46:25So it didn't put you off?
46:27No.
46:34I followed this Klan for seven months,
46:37trying to understand their belief
46:39in white supremacy.
46:41I think the thing that binds them together is fear.
46:45Fear of everyone outside of themselves.
46:49I've seen the consequences of this ideology,
46:52and it fails to recognize common humanity.
46:55The vision Frank presents appears benign,
46:59but I can't see how their underlying beliefs
47:02can lead to anything but more bloodshed.
47:05It's time for the south to rise again.
47:15It's time to take our country back, my friends.
47:21When we're bowing down to those faggots who we see.
47:33God damn them all, they always will be free.
47:39That is something I kind of goofed around with.
47:41That is something I kind of goofed around with.
47:43They will use it to allow me to take my mind
47:45and be proud of me.
47:47You've got nothing to do with me.
47:49But I say it's true.
47:51I don't know why it's not easy.
47:53You've got nothing to do with me.
47:54You've got nothing to do with me.
47:55I don't know why it's lazy,
47:57but you're not too much.
47:58You've got nothing to do with me.
48:00I don't know why it's wacky.
