00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:10Charlie Dimock, Lee Burkill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your
00:27gardening emergencies each week two of our designers will go head-to-head pick me
00:35and let's do this the garden we're gonna go with and whichever designer loses the
00:48race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera Lee said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams your eyes into
01:02reality today the team are taking on a functional but tired narrow garden in
01:15Winchester do you want the peppers yeah go for it yeah here we go two peppers let's get a bowl
01:22Lucy and husband Stefan met 10 years ago at University lived opposite each other on a
01:32corridor and kind of bonded over food in the kitchen I think so we were big big
01:36foodies and we used to cook for each other every week yeah yeah not your
01:41typical student grub though I think the first thing we could was venison casserole
01:45together yeah their passion for food has a particular focus I think we got into
01:53barbecuing during lockdown didn't we we were bouncing around the house and ended
01:58up just cooking outside every other day and kind of got a bit of a passion for it
02:01that way yeah and then we ended up doing Christmas dinner on it that year and
02:05that's become a bit of a tradition since what we got on the barbecue we've got piri piri chicken
02:10nice and the couple welcomed three-month-old son Alfie into their lives what's daddy cooking
02:17yeah it's always been like my pet project to do something with the garden and I think this
02:26year being on maternity leave I was like right this is what I'm gonna do this year get the garden
02:31sorted yeah but realizing it is really hard now Alfie's come along and that's kind of meant well
02:37actually be quite a nice time to have a nice space outside for him sort of grow into and do
02:41some do some cooking and things of him outside later on as well but yeah the garden is just needing
02:47some help personally I think the garden is just looking a little bit tired it just sometimes I find
02:56it a little bit depressing to be outside because it's just a bit tatty it's not somewhere you want
03:01to come sit and socialize with friends I think because we love to cook and we love being outdoors
03:07at the moment there's just no space especially when it comes to their one big love so we obviously love
03:16cooking on the barbecue but I think the thing that we don't have at the moment that'd be really useful
03:19is placed is to prep food outside store the charcoal store the smoking words those kind of things yeah
03:27it's always otherwise we're always like ferrying stuff in and out in and out and it's just a bit
03:31of a pain in bad weather putting mud all over the kitchen yes so I guess another thing that we really
03:40don't like about the garden is this kind of awkward slope that we've got here it just makes the space
03:45really well awkward to deal with yeah my grass is quite uneven and patchy as well isn't it yeah
03:52bit of a mess and I guess the far corner of the garden the problem we've got with it is that this
03:57is assortment of concrete and patio slabs it's a real mishmash I think yeah yeah I think it's fair to
04:04say this this corner of the garden probably is a little bit of a disaster isn't it you know whilst
04:07we're quite outdoorsy people we don't really know much about gardens and planting and things like
04:12that and it's useful to get some help with what we can do with the garden the light that we get
04:16knowledge yeah we need the knowledge first and then we're going to go we really want the garden
04:26to be sorted out now because we've got the house to have state where we're really happy with it yeah
04:32and it just feels like this is the missing the missing link almost just to have a nice complete
04:37garden would be great cup of tea yeah let's get a cup of tea Chris and Flo this nice are hoping
04:52their design will be the one to take the garden from tatty and tired to tremendous
04:58it's slow yeah got Lucinda and Stefan yeah in Chester with their hands on a something looks like
05:08they're incubating I think that looks like a massive barbecue barbecue isn't it yeah yeah that's the clue
05:15isn't it definitely a clue I think let's have a look at their garden so quite a long garden very
05:21very long and this down here I mean they've got this patio at the back of the house but it looks
05:25very dark and shady doesn't it and they look like they've been trying to do a bit of guarding there
05:30yeah very patchy lawn very sad looking garden it definitely needs a bit of love absolutely so
05:37should we find out what they want okay hi Chris hi Flo we'd love to have a garden dedicated to
05:45barbecuing growing our own produce and socializing it we were right barbecuing I mean a pretty big
05:51clue right yes and we'd love to have a dining table as well something that's nestled in amongst all the
05:57plants and somewhere we can sit with family and friends and really relax mmm they want a lot in this
06:02little garden yes they do it'd be great to have a dedicated kitchen area in the garden somewhere with
06:08the barbecue next to it where I can prepare food and cook it yeah yeah we're a new family too so it'd be
06:15really great to have sort of a garden that Alfie can learn how to to grow his own food and cook it
06:20as well now that's a good concept isn't it we love that you can grow it you can see it happening and
06:26then you're really proud of it and then boom it's on your plate so hopefully that's not too much to ask
06:31and we're really looking forward to seeing your designs there is a lot to pack into this narrow
06:36long garden so go on Flo tell me what's the budget it's six thousand which is a good size budget for this
06:43size garden I think so too I have got loads of ideas for this one I can't wait likewise I'm gonna cook up
06:49something special do you see what oh that was a good one I know right not gonna be as good as my design
06:54though watch out Chris and Flo will create designs in line with the healthy six thousand
07:01pound budget Lucy and Stefan have to pick their favorite which the losing designer will help build
07:08the designers and top team of landscapers provide the labor for free leaving the entire budget to
07:15spend on materials and plants okay let's see what we've got welcome to barbecue central that's the name
07:30of the garden I've designed for you nice this is your garden the barbecue capital of Wessex let me
07:38take you on a journey and show you what it's all about I wanted to step out onto your patio but what
07:43I've done is I've introduced just a simple step along that edge to get rid of that weird awkward ramp that
07:49came up from the back gate that step down is gonna work far better than the ramp that we've got yeah I
07:54think that's gonna make a huge difference actually flows design includes a shed for the young family
07:59to store toys and barbecue equipment inside but having a shed near to the house is problematic
08:05because you don't want to look out and see it straight away so what I've done is I brought some
08:10planting very close to the patio very close to the house but I've also put the screen here in the
08:15middle of that bed which means I can mask this view yeah that's a really good way of using that
08:21corner isn't it hmm so what I've decided to do is to break up into three different rooms the first
08:27one is that immediate area straight out of the house and then we've got this amazing middle zone
08:32now this is all about the barbecue cooking and growing produce so down this left-hand side we've
08:38got a really big six meter long raised bed and it's four foot wide in there you can be growing
08:44vegetables herbs fruit bushes anything you want that you can get on that barbecue I've given you a
08:50generous grow your own section these two raised beds we're gonna put pollinating plants in this
08:57there's some lovely pops of summer color the bees will be just crazy over it and then this is your
09:03section here for growing your own fruit veg that's nice I think this is the bit that you're gonna be
09:10really excited about this is gonna be a spot where you can barbecue prep your food all in the dry
09:16because this is a covered barbecue station oh that's gonna be really good yeah I love that up
09:22your knife not to use an umbrella yeah it's gonna be quite simple really nice rustic timber work with
09:27a corrugated steel roof but you've got your very own kitchen worktop underneath here and underneath that
09:34is gonna be two little storage cupboards with stainless steel doors so they really are all weather and we
09:40also want to make you your very own bespoke dining tables I really like that yeah the midsection of
09:47Flo's design is more of an open space I've taken all the lawn out and replaced it with gravel which is
09:54low maintenance looks good wet or dry Chris has also swapped the original grass for something different
10:01I've got these amazing sandstone sets that are gonna link the garden together on a curve flowing
10:07through the whole space and then I've got other ones running horizontally across and what that does is
10:12it just gives you a little visual pause as you move into each zone but they also connect it all together I
10:18like how green the garden is yeah it actually really contrasts nice against the gravel the real star is this
10:25brand-new porcelain patio with the sandstone sets around the edge and this is gonna be where you catch the
10:30last of the evening Sun Stefan I know you really like your sort of architectural plants you really
10:35like the palm that you've got there so I wanted to give that a new lease of life and then complement
10:40it with more architectural plants around that area so I'd love to give you a tree fern in one of those
10:45corners on the shadier side there yeah I like how it's surrounded by all the plants it looks quite snug
10:49for the evenings so I put these two trellises here and we get to the patio barbecue central and this is
10:57where you guys are going to hang out you're going to kick back cook your barbecue prepare food have a
11:05social space for you and friends and family that's nice I really really love this garden I think it's
11:10got some amazing quirky details and I'd love to see it built so I hope you pick me I really like this
11:16design I would love for you to have this as your garden so let's do this it's gonna be really tricky to
11:22pick between those two actually yeah oh dear Chris is the kitchen's here yeah and the kitchen I think
11:31looks really nice there yeah there's a nice amount of space to work with isn't there yeah really nice
11:35and then the back of the garden that seems to be where the patios are gonna be slightly different
11:42though aren't they yeah Flo's has got that nice burglar in the corner which makes use of that that space
11:46nicely yeah but then I really like the slabs used in Chris's as well it's really tough have you got a
11:52leaning to which one you prefer no it's a really difficult decision between the two yeah hi Chris
11:59hi Flo thanks for two amazing garden designs we were bowled over by how you came up with two such
12:05different designs I guess starting with Flo's design I particularly loved all the pops of colors
12:11that you use throughout the garden oh yes trademark you and your colors yeah yeah and Chris for me the
12:18obvious highlights that kitchen area would be so nice not to get soaking wet was cooking Christmas dinner
12:23this year there's elements from both gardens that we absolutely love and if we could we'd pick and
12:27choose them from either one I mean they can't have both no that's mine so drum roll Chris yes I'm gonna
12:42take that flow all day long I really really wanted this one actually yeah yeah no fair play I think you
12:49know the kitchen and the growing area is what won it exactly we can have a lot of fun building this oh
12:55definitely definitely yeah yeah and maybe you know struck up the barbecue after oh yes now you're
13:01talking fortunately Ben and the landscaping team are ready to get cooking and sort this garden out
13:10so shine okay then team we are here in Winchester open that Sun comes around to visit us I don't know no
13:23it would be too hot you want to keep the patio by the house we're then going to take this thing so
13:30there isn't a slope two areas of paving one by the gate and then the second one is at the top of the garden here
13:37but we do have a huge six meter long raised bed going in there wow not only that you've got this barbecue
13:44barbecue station not at all not only that here we go again Chris would like us to make an outdoor
13:51dining table Jono me you and Monty we're gonna do two curved parallel lines you know through the garden
13:59up to the top paved area yeah let's get the digger in there strip everything back and crack on with it
14:04let's do it first job removing the ugly concrete slabs at the back of the garden it is yeah as always the
14:18team are keen to save as many plants as possible including this giant fatsia okay we've got as much
14:25roots out as I could now filled this gorilla bucket up with water we're gonna give it a nice drink and
14:34then Chris will come in and he's gonna put it in his new home small jobs done it's time for some big
14:42help to strip the lawn out look at that makes it a lot easier whilst the lawn gets stripped out Lee and
14:56Jamie have been working on the giant raised fruit and veg bed we're actually making some headway final
15:03part of the puzzle and we can start putting a bit of this waste soil into here and then we can start
15:09moving on to the the barbecue enclosure I'm looking forward to that something a bit different while
15:19the back of the garden is prepared for its patio work can get underway in the kitchen area you stick
15:28to digging holes I'll stick to doing building stuff with the posts in place work can begin on the frame
15:35beautiful we're ready out back to start laying down some paving so yeah time to get the mixer on we
15:49got the slabs out with the frame now complete it's time for Lee and Jamie to fit the roof to the kitchen
16:00area so now we're just putting the tin sheets on we've cut all the joists so we're gonna do a sheet
16:06then add the joist do another sheet add the joist till we get all the way to the end work is also
16:14underway laying the small decorative tiles called sets how's it going Jonah a great man I think yeah
16:22it looks lovely with the first day coming to an end the landscapers give it one more push to get
16:30the slats onto the back of the kitchen edge the rear patio with sets as well as creating a step from
16:44the front patio to lose the slope so right the end of the day the boys have just put them in the last
16:51slab thing now and then wait for the designers they'll be here in the morning the next morning
17:07in Winchester here we are flowing the former capital of England yes where the ancient kings
17:13and queens used to hang out exactly well we are going to be the king and queen of barbecues today
17:19oh I can't wait to get that grill on and start flipping those burgers that sounds good flow
17:24oh wow absolutely loving these sets doesn't it just draw you through exactly it's got the curve yeah
17:36I love a curve that is a it's a work of art and we're looking pretty good it's quite far along this
17:41I'm loving that yeah yeah the kitchen's coming along well I mean you say that at the minute it's a
17:46shelter there isn't much of a kitchen in it so that's your job that's my job yeah okay what's
17:52my job today then well there's lots of bits and bobs that I'd really like you to focus on the veg beds
17:57oh yummy yummy there is an amazing grapevine over there so I think that needs a bit of love and maybe
18:02some wires to train it along and then I've got the very fun job yeah I've given you some flat pack
18:07furniture to erect I kind of like flat pack I mean you know it it pushes some buttons for me but I love
18:13the adventure exactly and it's all going to come together and we're going to make a beautiful garden
18:17absolutely all right I'm going to get my flat pack energy go on now we are in a really good place
18:25with this garden you can see all of the bare bones are in we've got part of the shelter built but
18:30although that's pretty good there's still a lot of work to do because I'm going to be focusing all
18:35my efforts on this barbecue station and now this is what I think won me the garden and I've got some
18:42very special cabinets for it so I'm going to take my time and get that just perfect and then we move
18:49into the productive area where I want to give Lucinda and Stefan loads of produce space where
18:54they can grow together as a family but another big thing that needs to happen in this zone is we need
19:00to make them a bespoke table and Flo is going to be working on all that flat pack furniture now
19:05what's really lovely is these sets just breaking up the garden into different rooms and then with
19:10these other sets crossing through in the curves it just links you through the garden and shows you
19:15exactly where you need to walk with no workable space inside the team will have to build all the
19:21furniture outside the garden starting with the flat packs I'm just gonna channel all my energy into
19:28following the instructions number one and getting it done really quickly so pray for me everybody
19:35Lee has been tasked with building a dining table from oak getting the wood into the right condition
19:42is the first task once I've got it all plain down sanded cut it to length it's going to be 1.5 long
19:49so it's not going to be too heavy to move around we've got some lovely metal legs we're going to fasten
19:54to it I think it's going to look really nice once it's all made sorted out I want to give it a nice
19:59coat of oil that should make the grain pop and hopefully Chris will be happy with it
20:04but there's no point in dining furniture if there's no garden kitchen right what are we doing then
20:12boss right well this is the most important bit yeah it's a garden don't tell Flo that because those
20:17benches are very important too yes my bench is important but this bit is crucial it's a big part
20:23of the design so we need to get it right yep and it's a bit more fiddly innit because we've got those
20:27cabinets to build in we have this thing that's still doors yeah and we've got the porcelain countertop
20:31going all out on this one you put a lot into this I know I was thinking so 600 outside to outside then
20:38you do cement board straight on top no is that what you're saying or not yeah I'm just trying to work out
20:42what the inner bit is I got yeah makes sense posts framework then we can think about all the fiddly
20:49bits and pretty fine it awesome look at that perfect I'm almost at the end of this one been
21:00fairly straightforward only 10 screws two chairs to do I mean what could go wrong hey what could go wrong
21:12next to join the whole garden design together is the arrival of the plant life you know what this
21:20means don't you oh I know yeah look at magic whoa loving it love this very architectural yes yes but I
21:29love the clashing yeah well you know you've got to have a bit of contrast yes but it is it's got a
21:35very a very stylized unique look it's not too over the top no no those moody purples yeah the hookah is
21:41it very well then we've got those then we've got some other architectural plants got these little
21:47yuckas look at them hmm they are cute aren't they yeah it's all about getting the contrast of foliage
21:53around the garden mm-hmm and then of course there's the food bits well this is the bit I want you
21:57focus on yes yes yes yes so obviously we've got some chilies got some sage and mint yeah and the
22:03rosemary tucked in there um and then what about these big boys at the back yeah but now on a plant
22:08but on a bit of height and right back there I've got the biggest surprise of them all oh that's my
22:14massive tree firm oh yeah oh yeah come on look at that banana it's good isn't it beautiful what do
22:34you think we'll get some fruit no time soon stick it in the garden it's lovely with the plants off the
22:42van Flo is taking a break from building the flat packs to help edge a planting border I'm laying
22:50these sets down to create this curved edge sets of these small squares used for paving they can
22:58sometimes give a cobbled effect if used in a certain way but they're really nice they're made out of
23:03natural stones so no two are exactly the same but that's lovely that that gives it the real kind
23:09of natural rustic feel to it and it does take a bit more time to obviously lay because they're
23:17smaller sized units but they look really good and as they weather look even better yeah happy with
23:29that the guys are going to cement them in bring them up to the same level and voila job done
23:35meanwhile Chris's bespoke kitchen unit is starting to take shape this is the framework for the countertop so
23:53this is where the porcelain tiles are going to sit but first we've got to get this all screwed in so we
23:58can cut the legs and we know what we're really working with you're working with me best in the
24:03business well second best I'm just gonna try out my chair with the table Leah I just thought I'd come
24:15and supervise no just check it out just see how they work together it's beautiful yeah you like
24:22it look at that yes oh it's wrong color though oh it's got wrong color chair send them back you have
24:28to take them all I know something isn't quite working in the box send them back so you're gonna
24:34oil this yeah yeah I think dinner will shortly be served oh nothing more satisfying and taking the
25:03protective coating off something ah the noise isn't quite as nice but look at how nice beautiful and
25:11shiny that is easy to clean and it's going to stand out on that beautiful barbecue over there
25:16with half the day gone the garden is prepared to receive gravel
25:22and the kitchen unit is ready to be brought in I'm most looking forward to the kitchen area I think it
25:30looks fantastic I would really like to prep the food outside and put it on the barbecue and then
25:35serve it up outside straight away rather than having to come indoors again all right all right
25:40Ben's going in all right and then we'll you got it I guess my only worry is whether there's going
25:47to be enough space to store all the wood and the charcoal right there we go yeah and if there's
25:54enough space to store your aprons and oven mitts and all that other paraphernalia you've got and
26:01then to you a bit is it you need to get out ready we'll trap you in there we go now obviously we've
26:10still got to level this up and there's a lot of work to do to finish it but it's pretty good in position
26:15a few leftover sets are used to level things out and the unit can be cemented into its permanent home
26:24where the magic happens you ready while Lee adds a protective layer of oil to the oak table attention
26:31in the garden turns to the finer details hey I know what you think gorgeous I love it love the stainless
26:41steel yeah it's a bit of a statement the guns looking all right but it's lacking something
26:47pretty obvious isn't it yeah yeah more gravel no no more gravel plants flow plants so look I've got
26:54my wires my first job now is to oh get on to the vine gonna tame the vine tame the vine and then
27:02launching and I'm gonna start bringing some of the big plants in now yeah cool all right all right ready
27:08first of Chris's architectural plants is this large feature tree come on then let's get it in
27:13it's you talk to me or the fern the fern go on come on flow also has her hands full with a grapevine
27:23okay I'm just wearing the vine at the moment and just for a bit of fun but actually it's a really
27:30healthy robust plant and there's a lot of it so I'm gonna need some really strong wire good tension
27:38to hold it on this fence here it's probably enough to go round that side as well which
27:44would be lovely in fact it's planting puzzles everywhere you look sometimes you just got to
27:54sit and stare figure out where something's gonna go meanwhile Flo is getting a helping hand to install
28:01the wires to support the grapevine maybe if you go to the end and pull pull the down bit yes so the top
28:07comes a bit tighter yes yeah yeah perfect perfect Lee is giving the kitchen a porcelain worktop to match
28:16the patio and Chris is finally ready to plant his feature fern this piece right here is my key feature
28:26plant that sits right at the end of this garden now tree ferns are quite unusual plants because a lot
28:34of people haven't seen these before they're from New Zealand and Tasmania and what's really interesting
28:39about them is that when you buy them they often come with no roots on the bottom because all of the
28:45roots are actually on the trunk itself and because it's not got the roots you don't have to get it that
28:53deep it's just enough to stop it toppling over you can just gently tease these open and over time
29:08they will start to sit down naturally again but because it's been wrapped up still a bit like a
29:14shuttlecock at the minute now when you're looking after your tree fern especially when it's just
29:18getting established you need to keep it watered if it's hot weather like this and what you can do
29:23is just get a hose water down the trunk or just water from above and it will run from the crown
29:29down the trunk you just want to make sure that stays moist especially when it's just been planted
29:34because it hasn't put any of its fibrous roots out into the soil below other than that you should just
29:41enjoy them look after them and then you get these beautiful fronds cast in lovely shadows all over
29:48your patio it's an amazing amazing plant Chris's design also includes an extensive raised fruit and
29:58vegetable bed which Flo is taking charge of there's nothing better than growing your own fruit and
30:05especially when it's not a fruit that is readily available in the markets or the supermarkets and
30:12red goods breeds one such plants if you can get hold of a plant buy it and get it in your garden so
30:20like most cane fruit they're quite easy to grow they need good drainage good access to Sun and lots of
30:31watering this one is grown on a frame so it's cordon trained which is really good if you're tight on
30:38space and in a bed like this which is hasn't got that much depth and where you want to put in a lot of
30:43plants it's a really good choice because you can train it and keep it in this shape as it gets bigger I
30:49hope Lucy and Stefan are really excited about this because it's it's an unusual one but a lovely fruit to
30:55have hope we're gonna be very happy back on the other side of the garden this corner of the garden
31:04where it gets the last of the evening Sun is all about the architectural plants but to set those off
31:09you need some really beautiful underplanting and this hookah forever purple is perfect for that and
31:17what's really good about this hookah is it kind of gives a jungly effect which works really well with
31:21the tree fern and the formiums that I've got in here too and you get these beautiful flowers that
31:27come up and arch over and it also softens up the edges of the paving as well but what I think works
31:34really well here is the contrast between the santalina and the hookah it just makes this corner a garden pop
31:40and hookahs are relatively easy to look after they're happy in some shade and partial Sun and they don't mind it
31:50they're a little bit moist but they probably wouldn't want to be in a sunny dry exposed position yeah I
31:55think these are beautiful here
32:01Flo has more edible plants for the veg bed Chris has chosen another really interesting plant for this
32:08section it's called a pepper plant and the reason why it's called a pepper plant is because I'll demonstrate
32:14it to you chew it initially it's a bit herby and then the pepper kicks in when it hits you at the back of your throat
32:25it's really very nice if you like chilies if you like that hot sensation then it's absolutely mmm 100% enjoyable and you can use it in cooking you can use it as a tea and it's also a very attractive evergreen plant
32:41in the spring there's clusters of really pretty cream fragrant white flowers and a plant that's going to look good in the depths of winter really good structural plant
32:53while the kitchen unit gets some finishing touches Chris has another tree for the garden
32:59this beautiful tree is Circus canadensis forest pansy the eastern red bud and it has the most beautiful red leaves in autumn they turn the most amazing colors you can already see some of the veining starting to come out on the leaves there but what also is very special about this plant is that in spring when there's no leaves on the tree beautiful pinkie buds emerge all over the leaves there
33:06not just on the tips of the leaves they come from the tips of the leaves they come from the actual terme trud all the way over the stems and rins
33:36it and it is a real spectacle. Now it's a great tree for this end of the garden because it has
33:40such a glorious habit. As it grows up its branches really arch over and you have the multi-stem look
33:48so as it gets taller you can cut some of those lower stems, show off the branches and let this
33:53underplanting really thrive. And I think that's what this garden needs. We've got a good mix of
34:00evergreens but then you need these deciduous plants that give you that flash of colour
34:04in spring or in autumn to give you some seasonal drama. So I think Stefan and Lucinda are going to
34:10love this one. And Flo has another hot plant for the produce area. Look how vibrant and colourful
34:20this chilli plant is. It is absolutely weighted down with chillies and if Lucy and Stefan are really
34:27into chillies then that's great. You know they might get through them in a season but when the plant
34:31starts to die because it's an annual they can pick the chillies, they can take them inside, string them up,
34:36dry them, put them in oil, crush them, use them in their cooking. So you know they don't have to die on the plant.
34:44As the day nears the end, Chris has found the perfect spot for Stefan and Lucy's Fatsia.
34:55Right. Now this Fatsia has had a hard time recently because it was down here where the barbecue station is but I really wanted to save it so the guys have lifted it, put it in a bucket of water to keep its roots happy and now I'm going to replant it right on the edge.
35:14It's a great plant for this corner of the garden because it gets plenty of shade over here so it's not going to dry out too much and what's good with transplanting it is that because we're at the end of summer coming into autumn it's not going to get too stressed with loads of heat so I think it should survive and be absolutely fine.
35:33With the day almost over all that's left is to bring the dining table in.
35:43Up there? Yeah if we go just past that line.
35:46As well as Flo's chairs and benches and move the barbecue to pride of place in the bespoke outdoor kitchen.
35:57The final feature of this perfect new home.
36:03Hey! How are you feeling about this?
36:06I am loving it in here. It feels really good doesn't it?
36:09They're going to be blown away.
36:11Yeah I think compared to what was here the amount of usable garden that they've now got is just ridiculous.
36:17Yeah it's modern clean lines love the kitchen of course they're going to love the kitchen.
36:23I know it's a bit over the top but they deserve that right?
36:26They can grow their own food sit out and enjoy it.
36:29It is I love what you've done with all the produce in this bed I mean the good thing about it is it's something that they can experiment with next year as well isn't it?
36:36And you know your planting scheme is beautiful I mean obviously I love the dark colours but tree farm is golden feature.
36:45Yeah.
36:46But yeah the thing is it's a lovely garden but it's for them.
36:50It's for them yeah not us sadly.
36:51Shall I go and get Stefan and Lucie?
36:53Yeah yeah bring them out.
36:55Two days ago Lucie and Stefan's garden was tatty and uninspiring with nowhere for them to comfortably cook or eat as a family with baby Alfie.
37:08Now with a budget of £6,000 it's been transformed into BBQ Central.
37:15Complete with dining and seating areas and a variety of eye-catching plants.
37:20But will it be all they wished for?
37:24There you are now you're together and you can hold each other's hands if you like.
37:27There you go.
37:29Now you really wanted a garden that celebrated your absolute love of cooking outdoors on your beloved BBQ.
37:36You wanted an outdoor kitchen.
37:38You wanted an area to grow produce.
37:41You wanted a big socialising space and a spot to catch the last of the evening sun.
37:46And most importantly you wanted a garden that you could grow into as a family and one you could nurture together for years to come.
37:54So please without any further ado open your eyes.
37:59Wow.
38:00Oh my god.
38:01Wow.
38:02Look at that.
38:04Oh wow.
38:07Look at the table.
38:09This is it there's things everywhere.
38:11That's nuts.
38:14Oh that's a good reaction.
38:16Oh look.
38:17Look at the chillies.
38:19Oh.
38:20The tree fence.
38:21The tree fence.
38:22Of course that caught your eye.
38:24Wow.
38:25God it's like a tropical paradise almost.
38:27You know that palm that was already yours some of these shrubs they were already there but they just needed some love around them.
38:33And the cooking area.
38:34Well obviously it's like that.
38:35Yeah.
38:36Plenty of.
38:37Yeah yeah.
38:39I can't believe it's our garden.
38:41Before the garden lacked anywhere for the couple to enjoy their favourite pastime.
38:46Now they can relish in their very own covered barbecue space complete with outdoor kitchen.
38:53Oh my gosh.
38:54Do you think this is fit for your cooking requirements?
38:57It's better than the kitchen inside.
38:59Yes.
39:00That's what we wanted to hear.
39:01Of course they love the kitchen.
39:03That was the whole point of this garden and it is stunning.
39:06It's big.
39:07It's bigger than I thought it was going to be but you're definitely going to use all the space.
39:10Yeah I'm going to use that space definitely.
39:11Yeah.
39:12Wow you've got space on top and then you've got porcelain tops that match the porcelain caving at the end.
39:18I've noticed the lights as well.
39:21Well I know.
39:22I'm a big fan of lights.
39:23When it goes dark these will automatically turn on.
39:26I really love it yeah.
39:27Gives me some light as well.
39:28Yeah and this factor here with the big leaves this was along here before but we've actually managed to lift it.
39:35I love all the ferns as well.
39:36Yeah so we made a tiny raised bed in there just to retain the soil a bit but it looks lovely with them spilling out over the edges.
39:42Yeah.
39:43And what do you think about these sets that sort of go through?
39:45I love it.
39:46I love that they're grey as well.
39:47Yeah.
39:48Quite the ferns are grey.
39:49Well it ties in with the house doesn't it?
39:50Yeah yeah.
39:51Yeah it breaks up the gravel really nicely.
39:53I really like contrast of textures like the gravel the porcelain and the sets and the wood is yeah.
39:58Previously the garden had nowhere to grow fruit and vegetables for themselves and baby Alfie.
40:04All that's changed with the introduction of a giant raised growing bed and a bespoke table for the family.
40:11Great.
40:12Really great.
40:13So Flo's worked very hard on this bed today so she's been putting in all these different edibles, you've got a bit of a herb garden as well and I don't know if you've noticed this along your back fence.
40:25So yeah this is your vine and she's actually tidied it up and put wires through your fence post for it.
40:30It's so unruly that vine but it looks so nice now.
40:32It does.
40:33Yeah.
40:34Now the good thing about this bed is pretty generous so it's the sort of thing where you know we've put a few things in now but we are quite late in the season so this is next year I think you can really make it your own.
40:43Yeah yeah I'm already planning I think what we're going to plant.
40:45Yeah?
40:46Yeah.
40:47What sort of things do you want to grow?
40:48Tomatoes, courgettes.
40:49Oh yes.
40:50I'd like to do pumpkins as well.
40:51Pumpkins?
40:52Oh they're going to take over.
40:53Yeah grow a massive pumpkin.
40:54Yeah.
40:55I think Alfie would really like that.
40:56That would be cool.
40:57Yeah.
40:58Oh they love the veg area I'm happy.
40:59There's nothing better than picking your own tomato when it's like really warm and being sat in the sun.
41:03Yes.
41:04And you can grab it from there, chuck it straight on your plate on your very new table.
41:08Wow.
41:09It's cool isn't it?
41:10The table is awesome.
41:11Love the legs.
41:12Again it's something that I'd like inside as well as outside.
41:16It would be great inside too.
41:17Now this was one area but you've got a whole other area here.
41:22The end of the garden was once a barren concrete jungle.
41:27Now it's bursting with plant life and a porcelain patio sun trap.
41:33Wow.
41:34I love this.
41:35I love the purple hues.
41:36Love that.
41:37It's quite a bold contrast but it fits with like we were saying earlier that sort of exotic-y architectural
41:42plant theme.
41:43And we've got to talk about the tree fern right?
41:46Yeah.
41:47It's a big one.
41:48It's a big one.
41:49It is, yeah, it is really, really cool.
41:52Now this is obviously the sunny spot at the end of the day isn't it?
41:56Yeah.
41:57You really wanted a seating spot here.
41:58Yeah.
41:59Yes.
42:00Because before it was just, well, no space.
42:01It was abandoned and, yeah.
42:02And now you've got the beautiful porcelain, the sets to tie it all together.
42:05So nice.
42:06It's really nice.
42:07I love the porcelain tiles there.
42:08It's good, isn't it?
42:09Yeah.
42:10They're modern and very sleek.
42:11Yeah.
42:12But it's a great spot to chill out.
42:13And what's really nice about being down here is you get that view back to the house.
42:16It's brilliant, isn't it?
42:17Yeah.
42:18It looks like a completely different garden.
42:19Yeah.
42:20Yeah.
42:21I can't believe it.
42:22I think you're going to be spending hours down here, aren't you?
42:23Oh, loads of time.
42:24Yeah, I'm going to be spending everything down here.
42:25Yep.
42:26Now obviously I didn't build this garden all by myself.
42:28It's with the amazing team and the amazing Flo.
42:31Hi, guys.
42:32Hi.
42:33Hi.
42:34Hi.
42:35Nice to see you.
42:36What do you think?
42:37Absolutely love it.
42:38It's incredible.
42:39It's so nice.
42:40It's beautiful, isn't it?
42:41The crisp hole.
42:42Yeah.
42:43Glow up.
42:44Oh, the crisp hole glow up.
42:45That's got a ring to it.
42:46I like that.
42:47You're welcome.
42:48Now does this garden tick all your boxes?
42:50Yeah.
42:51100%.
42:52I think more as well.
42:53Absolutely more.
42:54Yeah.
42:55Absolutely love it.
42:56I think we did a good job.
42:57Yeah.
42:58Yes.
42:59Ecstatic.
43:00Yeah.
43:01Absolutely love it.
43:02Can't quite believe it's ours.
43:03No, it's incredible.
43:04I'm going to be getting the barbecue on instantly.
43:05Yeah.
43:06Yeah.
43:07I think we've got a long list of people going to be knocking on our door.
43:08I'll get on in five minutes if Chris and Flo want to stay.
43:09Yeah.
43:10Yeah.
43:11Yeah.
43:12Yeah.
43:13Yeah.
43:14Yeah.
43:15Yeah.
43:16Yeah.
43:17Yeah.
43:18Yeah.
43:19Yeah.
43:20Yeah.
