00:00Trump blames Nixon
00:02President Donald Trump recently blamed former President Richard Nixon for setting China
00:06on the path to becoming a global economic superpower, accusing the 37th president of
00:12having unleashed Beijing and allowing it to exploit the U.S. for decades.
00:17News.com has learned that the remarks came during an interview on Sunday Morning Futures
00:22with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, during which Trump also defended his plan to impose
00:27steep tariffs on Chinese imports starting November 1st.
00:31China has ripped us off from day one, Trump told Bartiromo during the interview.
00:36And you know, Richard Nixon, he allowed this to happen.
00:39You know, he was the one who opened China.
00:41I said, is that good or bad?
00:43You tell me.
00:44He unleashed it.
00:45And we have a very strong adversary.
00:47And they only respect strength.
00:50Nixon's February 1972 visit to Beijing marked a pivotal moment in Cold War history, re-establishing
00:56diplomatic communication between the U.S. and China after two decades of estrangement.
01:02The visit led to the Shanghai Communiqué, a joint statement laying the groundwork for
01:06formal diplomatic relations, which were fully normalized under President Jimmy Carter in 1979.
01:13The move is often credited with integrating China into the global economy, a development
01:17Trump now portrays as a costly mistake for America.
01:21Trump's comments came as the president renewed his threat to impose a 100 percent tariff on
01:26Chinese goods beginning November 1st.
01:28He linked the move to China's new export restrictions on rare earth minerals, a critical component
01:34in technology manufacturing.
01:36The proposed measure would raise total tariffs on Chinese imports to roughly 157 percent, according
01:42to Bartiromo.
01:43Asked whether such tariffs were sustainable, Trump replied, no, it's not sustainable.
01:48But that's what the number is.
01:49It's probably not.
01:50You know, it could stand.
01:52But they forced me to do that.
01:53Despite his criticism, Trump insisted he maintains a working relationship with Chinese President
01:58Xi Jinping, adding, I think we're going to do fine with China.
02:01I get along great with Xi.
02:03Trump's new tariffs are expected to roll out as he meets Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
02:08Summit in South Korea.
02:10He said he wants a fair trade deal, but warned that China only respects strength.
02:15The administration has not yet clarified whether negotiations will accompany the tariffs.
