In a historic milestone for Sikh representation in the U.S., Swaranjit Singh Khalsa has been elected as the first Sikh mayor of Norwich, Connecticut. A native of Jalandhar, India, the 40-year-old Democrat defeated Republican Tracy Gould and Independent Marcia Wilbur in the mayoral race. Khalsa, who moved to the U.S. in 2007 and runs a construction business, has long championed community service and diversity. His victory follows NYC’s election of Zohran Mamdani, marking another breakthrough for South Asian Americans in U.S. politics.
