New Yorkers are expressing hope and optimism following Zohran Mamdani’s historic election as New York City mayor. Residents told reporters, “We need something new,” and “Things are going to get so much better,” reflecting widespread anticipation for change and fresh leadership.

Mamdani becomes the first Muslim and first person of South Asian descent to hold the mayor’s office, as well as the youngest in over a century. Supporters highlight his message of inclusivity, equity, and progressive policies, which many hope will address long-standing issues in the city.

00:29Things are going to get so much better in New York City. I am very excited.
00:59I don't like. I don't like socialism. But hey, it'll be alright. I think he'll do a good job.
01:17Mangani? Mangani. We'll see. Because that doesn't work in Venezuela and in Cuba. But it's good, you know. I'm a poor guy, so let's see.
01:29I didn't vote. I'm not a Mangani guy. I'm not a Cuomo guy either. I usually vote. I wasn't that excited about either candidate.
01:37With that said, I wish Mangani the best. I think there's a lot of people that don't live in New York that are really excited to call this a communist city and all this stuff that's completely ridiculous.
01:50New York will be fine. Life goes on. Business as usual. New York is New York. We'll be good.
01:57It really didn't surprise me because the younger population is for him. And even though a lot of people have called him a radical, I don't think he's a radical.
02:11He has different views, you know, that people appreciated, people went for. I voted for Cuomo because I like Cuomo. Not that he would do any better than Mangani. I think as governor he didn't do a lot.
02:29But Mangani is going to give people hope, you know. Housing, for example, is very expensive. And he says he's going to address that issue. And I hope so. You know. But yeah. We need something new. You know. And it'll probably work.
02:51It's a worry for sure. I mean, I don't want, obviously, federal troops here. I'm moved here from Oregon. So I've seen what happened in Portland. I don't want that to happen here. If it does, again, it's all just kind of a sideshow, I think. I don't, you know. I don't think it's anything actually happens. He just wants to be able to show.
03:09On the news that, look what we did. We're fixing New York or whatever. Again, New York's good. We don't need federal troops here. But it's a worry for sure. He doesn't like Mangani and we know how he acts.
03:31We believe he doesn't fight.
03:41Trump has some issues. And he's not the kind of president that representative of the world. He's been seen by the things that he's doing now. He's acting as a king, you know, doing what he feels like.
03:58He's putting prosecutors that agree with him to prosecute his enemies, so to speak. And that is wrong. He's in violation of the United States Constitution. And I don't expect him to last very long. I know we have a higher power such as God. And he will ultimately deal with Trump.
04:20To me, the rich people are the ones that control us. Socialism. They're always good, we're bad. Even though they say it's different. Even though they say it, we're gonna help the poor.
04:40I'm hoping to see a more affordable city. You know, I'm 26 years old. I have a roommate. It's hard, you know, especially when you're in school and supporting yourself.
04:50And, obviously, MCA is not the most reliable system. So I'm looking forward to that policy. And while I don't have children, I have a lot of friends that do. So being able to see universal childcare would be really awesome.
05:06Childcare would be really awesome.
05:18I wish he does well. There's no hate in my heart.
05:21He should be a mayor for all New Yorkers.
05:25No.
05:39Okay.
05:44Cheers.
