00:00Trump responds on social media following election night.
00:04President Donald Trump has responded to the results of New York City's mayoral election,
00:09where democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani was projected as the winner.
00:14In a post on Truth Social shortly after the announcement, Trump wrote,
00:18and so it begins, a brief but pointed reaction to the historic outcome.
00:22Mamdani 34 made history as New York City's first Muslim mayor after running on a progressive
00:27platform that included fare-free buses, a $30 minimum wage by 2030, and a rent freeze on
00:33stabilized housing. His campaign drew strong support from young voters and progressive
00:38coalitions, emphasizing affordability and social equity. Trump had endorsed former New York Governor
00:44Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. Though the two were rivals during the COVID-19 pandemic,
00:50Trump urged New Yorkers to back Cuomo, calling him capable and warning that Mamdani's policies
00:55would harm the city. Ahead of the election, Trump told 60 Minutes that his administration might
01:00restrict federal funding to New York under Mamdani's leadership, saying it would be hard to send
01:05money to a city run by a communist. During his victory speech in Queens, Mamdani responded directly
01:11to Trump's remarks, declaring, New York will remain a city of immigrants, built by immigrants,
01:16powered by immigrants, and now led by an immigrant. Addressing Trump directly, he added,
01:21if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise
01:26to him. Mamdani's win capped a difficult night for Republicans, with the party also losing
01:31gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia. The Associated Press projected Mamdani's victory
01:37with just over 50 percent of the vote, signaling a notable leftward shift in New York politics ahead of
01:43the 2026 midterm elections.
