00:00Speaking of New York, let's go up to New York Spectrum News 1.
00:05Bobby Cousa is joining us, New York 1 Spectrum's political reporter,
00:10to give us an update on the mayor's race there.
00:13Bobby Cousa, what do you have for us?
00:16Yes, well, all eyes are on Zoran Mamdani, of course.
00:20I mean, this race has become a national story because he has really came out of nowhere.
00:25I mean, going back to the primary here, which took place back in June,
00:28he emerged from a pretty crowded field as having been somebody who was a virtual unknown here in New York City.
00:35He was kind of an obscure state assemblyman from Queens.
00:39But Mamdani, he's really a uniquely talented politician.
00:43He's a young guy. He's only 34 years old.
00:46He had a talent for making and has a talent for making these social media videos that got a lot of traction.
00:52He got a lot of young people excited about this race.
00:55And on top of that, he had a single-minded message that was all about affordability.
01:02At a time when some of the other candidates in the primary were talking about public safety and policing here in New York City,
01:09he was relentlessly focused on bringing down the cost of living.
01:14And that really is what resonated with people.
01:16So he won kind of a stunning upset in the primary back in June.
01:21And then, as those who have been following the race know, we saw the former governor, Andrew Cuomo, who lost in the primary,
01:27then decided to go ahead and run in the general election in November as an independent candidate.
01:33So this has really been a clash, sort of a rematch, really, between those two.
01:37And it has gotten kind of ugly in the last few weeks.
01:40But at this point, Mondani is considered the overwhelming favorite.
01:44He's been ahead in the polls.
01:45And so we're watching tonight to see if he wins, by how much he wins, whether he can break that 50 percent threshold.
01:53Because it's not just him and Andrew Cuomo.
01:55We've also got Curtis Sliwa, who is the Republican candidate in this race.
02:00And interestingly, President Donald Trump has come out behind Andrew Cuomo rather than the Republican in the race.
02:08So there's a lot going on.
02:09Also, the current mayor, Eric Adams, dropped out of the race a few weeks ago.
02:13Usually we don't have this kind of exciting general election race here in New York City,
02:18because a lot of times things are decided in the primary.
02:20So a lot of attention on New York City here tonight.
