Zohran Mamdani has made history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor, winning the election in a landslide. Born in Uganda in 1991 to renowned scholar Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, he later settled in New York with his family. A graduate of Bowdoin College, Mamdani has built a reputation for humility, living modestly in Astoria and commuting by subway. Despite limited declared assets, his rise from immigrant roots to the city’s top office marks a new chapter in NYC politics.
