00:00Hi, I'm Max. I've been a repairer here for over a couple of years now.
00:06I'm Anthony. We start during COVID.
00:10I'm Derek. I also started during COVID.
00:13That's great. And why do you guys volunteer at the Repair Cafe?
00:17I think there's an incredible satisfaction when you help someone fit something that's important to them.
00:22It's not just about the money, but if people have something that they really love,
00:27instead of throwing it away and trying to replace it, when you can fix it, give it another lease of life, that's a great feeling.
00:34I like the environmental aspect of it. People can get out of landfill and trying to go against this consumerist society, giving things a second life.
00:46The fulfilment of seeing someone get something back that, as Max says, has either got sentimental value
00:51or something that you've just avoided coming up in landfill for no good reason.
00:57And what are each of your favourite stories from being a volunteer at the Repair Cafe?
01:03My favourite repair wasn't the repair at all.
01:05It only came on with a fancy set and the thermostat was set too high so it wouldn't come on.
01:09It wasn't actually broken.
01:10I think I loved it when a kid brought in a guitar app and it was sort of making a sound, but not the right sound.
01:20His parents were very, very frustrated every time he wanted to learn guitar.
01:24But we got it fixed. We found out what was wrong.
01:27And when he plugged it in and played a chord, you could see a sigh of relief on his parents' face.
01:34But an absolute sigh, a sort of look of excitement on the kid's face as he knew he could go out and play that guitar.
01:41Small radio that came in that needed repair, a small component on the circuit board had blown and I managed to be able to change the component and repair the radio.
01:55Give it back to the person whose radio it was and the sense of joy they had with the radio that obviously had some sentimental value as well as monetary value to them.
02:05And what's one thing that you'd want people to know about the repair cafe?
02:09Why should they come here if they've got a faulty or broken?
02:13Nothing to lose by creating us have a chance to try and fix it.
02:17We can't fix it if it's uneconomic or dangerous.
02:21Obviously, people would have known worse off than they would have been penalised.
02:25It's a great opportunity to find out how the things you've got work, whether they are fixable.
02:31And if they are, we've got a great chance to repair it for you or get you back out using it again without having to spend any more money on it.
02:40Exactly so.
02:42You've got, as Anthony's just said, you've got nothing to lose by bringing out a long cross-dow look at it.
02:48From our point of view, we've got nothing to lose.
