01:00I'm currently in hospital waiting for the prognosis.
01:03He's going to be out of action for everything.
01:06Thank you for coming.
01:08My mum is just a lifesaver.
01:13It's now been a month since Jasmine and John got the keys to their place.
01:32And after a few weeks of doing temporary work to make it livable, they've been able to move in.
01:38All the work that we've done up until now is really the bare minimum.
01:46I don't think we've even really scratched the surface because now the real work begins.
01:51It's a bit of a treat, isn't it?
02:01Cheers.
02:02Cheers.
02:03It's the morning one.
02:04Even nice to be eating breakfast outside in November.
02:10I know.
02:11What a win.
02:12Everyone's at home with their, like, gloves and scarves and hats and everything.
02:17I think what we need to work on, maybe we're trying to isolate areas to do, you know, rather
02:24than doing it as one big build because we're living here and because of, potentially because
02:28of cost, although I know lots of people say it's cheaper in the long run to do it in one
02:33big hit.
02:34I don't think we have that luxury.
02:35I think we have to live here.
02:36We can't afford to go into another rental, which is one of the reasons we're now living
02:42here, sort of...
02:43Camping.
02:44Semi-ready state.
02:49We're going to try and tackle the renovation floor by floor, which is slightly foolish,
02:54but we're going to start on the first floor, get the kids' room sorted and move on from
02:58there.
02:58The second phase will be the basement.
03:03The reasoning behind that is we think if we put a little seating area, maybe a little
03:09kitchenette down in the basement, then when we go on to phase three, which is going to
03:13be the living room, kitchen, ground floor, we can live downstairs.
03:19Because we're living here, we don't want it to disrupt our lives too much.
03:24And they want to have it all done in less than eight months' time.
03:28And I had the great idea of maybe we should throw a party to celebrate, a kind of housewarming
03:36party, because I don't feel we can have a housewarming party in this state.
03:41But it would be nice to get everyone to come over and celebrate with us once the house is
03:47finished.
03:47So with that plan laid out and a party to organise, on to their first task, removing
03:56a wall out on the patio.
03:58While it might not be the most essential, it certainly looks fun.
04:03The previous owner had started an extension of the patio, so it only makes sense to finish
04:11it off.
04:11A new sidewall has already gone up, reclaiming part of the lower-level driveway.
04:18But the old wall still needs demolishing, and the floor needs sorting too.
04:25Rawr!
04:26Just ripping it apart with my bare hands.
04:31I tell you what, it's a really good workout for your shoulders and your arms.
04:36Because who needs to go to the gym?
04:41I was kind of hesitant about taking out this wall initially, because basically these tiles,
04:49lovely blue and yellow tiles all around the patio, were chosen by the lady that used to
04:55own this house.
04:56We'd have to have tiles to go all around that bit, and we just, we don't have more of them.
05:02I just, you know, I think about the person who's, she's chose them with love and put
05:07them here, and then I'm just smashing them to bits, which feels a bit wrong.
05:16Having found knocking down the kitchen wall so satisfying, let's not hang around, let's
05:20take out another wall.
05:20This is going to be absolutely lovely, but it does make you look at it and go, this is
05:32going to be massive, isn't it?
05:33I mean, it makes you, it makes you instantly realise how big it's going to be.
05:40Well, unless you want to, unless you want to take out a wall that's probably structurally
05:44holding up half of the house, that's holding up the terrace above it.
05:48Oh, yeah.
05:51Imagine it's your husband.
05:58I just feel like I've got this, I can't smash it to bits with these tiles on.
06:01Let me have a go.
06:03This isn't my first wall knocking down rodeo.
06:05This is number two.
06:08Go on, John.
06:10It's kind of like therapy.
06:12You know, you could do anger management courses with demolishing walls.
06:18With that mood-boosting activity complete, it's time to focus on priorities.
06:28Starting on the first floor, there are two bathrooms, a couple of balconies, a sun terrace,
06:35a spare room, and Jasmine's priority, Albion and Joy's bedrooms.
06:40Oh, Joy, it's going to be lovely, your room, isn't it?
06:46Hopefully.
06:48For the kids to feel like this is home, and for them to have some ownership of their own home,
06:55we really want them to be involved in getting excited about the renovation,
07:03and especially about their own bedrooms.
07:05So we're kind of giving them a bit of a free reign to do whatever they can imagine in their own bedrooms.
07:13What plans have you got or ideas?
07:16Well, I'm planning to have a rainforest-y-themed bedroom,
07:24and then what I'm thinking, a little hammock on the ceiling just there to put, like, teddies on or something.
07:30Oh!
07:30Because I have so many.
07:32So like a rope sort of hammock or something that would be nice in the rainforest.
07:38For sure.
07:39And across the hallway...
07:41Tell me, what's your idea for how you'd like your room to look?
07:46I want it to look like a rainbow broke into the house and vomited on it.
07:55Are you serious?
07:58Yeah.
08:01So when I think of rainbow vomit,
08:04all I can think of is, like, a big swirly mass of different colours all mixed up together.
08:10Is that what you want?
08:11Yeah.
08:12I was not expecting Albion to come out with the rainbow vomit theme.
08:18I don't know where he got it from.
08:20I know he likes bright colours.
08:21He loves yellow.
08:22So I kind of thought he might want some sort of quite sunny, bright room.
08:28But rainbow vomit...
08:30Well, it just shows what a great imagination he's got.
08:34..and he's full of ideas and full of fun.
08:38And I think his bedroom will reflect that part of his personality.
08:41MUSIC PLAYS
08:43MUSIC PLAYS
08:45MUSIC PLAYS
08:46MUSIC PLAYS
08:47Wow!
08:48MUSIC PLAYS
08:49MUSIC PLAYS
08:50MUSIC PLAYS
08:51MUSIC PLAYS
08:52MUSIC PLAYS
08:53Is Mummy just getting the minging ones?
08:54Yeah.
08:55I am at the moment.
08:56But look, there's some here Albie can pick.
08:58Albie.
08:59Albie, I got the perfect one.
09:01Is Hazel going to pick one?
09:02She looks absolutely petrified, poor thing.
09:05It's not this.
09:06She doesn't like it.
09:08She doesn't like it.
09:12It's tiny.
09:13My mum is hidden amongst the oranges.
09:15Fresh orange.
09:17I don't like orange.
09:18Fresh orange.
09:19Another one.
09:21What are you going to make of your own lemons?
09:23Lemonade!
09:27As the whole family settle into their new life in their new home,
09:31the build continues.
09:33With the current focus being the first floor,
09:35home to the kids' bedrooms.
09:37We're currently working on Albie's room,
09:38and part of the plan with his room
09:40is to open up access to the balcony next to his bedroom.
09:43Currently only accessible from the hallway,
09:46so a new doorway is needed.
09:48So this is where you can start the door from.
09:50So it has to be from here to here,
09:52which is 80 centimetres, including the door frame,
09:56which is basically a standard door size,
10:00but can I find a door in that size?
10:04No.
10:05And if we have to have doors custom made,
10:08not only is it expensive,
10:10but it will also take much longer.
10:13So I'm in a bit of a conundrum about what to do, to be honest.
10:17With the door a messy first floor job they're keen to start with,
10:21no actual door on site yet,
10:23builder Carlos and his team are turning to tasks in other parts of the house,
10:28like prepping the patio.
10:32Feeling quite frustrated today.
10:35In fact, there was a little accident with the fibre optic cable.
10:39The fibre optic cable got run over by the compactor by mistake.
10:45And so I needed to get that fixed as a priority
10:48because on Monday the concrete's getting poured over that patio,
10:54which meant that I didn't get some other stuff done.
10:57So now I'm just worried that next week, if I don't get these doors in time,
11:05I don't know what Carlos and Martin are going to...
11:10I don't know what they're going to be doing
11:13because that was the plan for next week,
11:15was to get those balcony doors done.
11:17The next morning, an old friend of John's, who's holidaying in the area,
11:31is popping round to say hello.
11:34Hello!
11:35Lil Jazz, Jazz Lil.
11:36Hi Jasmine.
11:37So nice to meet you.
11:39Finally.
11:41Liliana was married to hairy biker Dave Myers for more than a decade,
11:46before he sadly passed away from cancer just over a year ago.
11:51Thank you. It's lovely to give me so welcome. Thank you.
11:53This is your new home.
11:55This is our building site.
11:58While it's the first time Jasmine and Liliana have met,
12:01John has known her for years,
12:03having worked on Dave's cooking shows for around 15 years.
12:07My friendship with Dave meant the world to me
12:09and he often spoke about Jazz and Lil meeting when he was alive,
12:13which we never got around to doing.
12:15So when Lil came over to see the house and to meet Jazz for the first time,
12:18it was great.
12:19I do admire what you started
12:22because it's not easy to start something in a new country.
12:25Have you done renovations?
12:27Yeah, we've done before and most of the time on my own.
12:31Really?
12:32As it happened because Dave was working.
12:34Dave was always working.
12:35Always working.
12:36Sounds familiar.
12:38Yeah.
12:39And he would come home and say,
12:40Oh, my darling, we have a beautiful home, don't we?
12:44Yes.
12:45Now go and put the curtains up.
12:46No!
12:48No, Jamie Oliver doesn't have to do it in his house.
12:50Why should I?
12:52I remember very vividly when Dave called me with his cancer diagnosis
12:56and, you know, it sort of blew me away.
13:01And, you know, that was one of the reasons we decided to up sticks
13:05and live for the moment.
13:06Oh, my God, look at this face.
13:09Do you like it?
13:10I do.
13:11It already looks like a home.
13:13Yes.
13:14It's got a soul.
13:15It's got, it does, doesn't it?
13:16Yeah, it does.
13:17Oh, do you get that?
13:18I do.
13:19And, you know, if I was showing someone around this house,
13:21I'd say, listen, you know, you've got to realise
13:23there's a lot of work to be done here.
13:25I'd probably worn them off.
13:26But when we walked in, we just thought,
13:28it's got so much potential.
13:31Come and have a look at this, Lil.
13:33Very inviting swimming pool.
13:35Well, I can imagine how it's going to be,
13:39when it's going to be inviting.
13:40Yeah, exactly.
13:41Have a dip.
13:42Do you want a dip?
13:43A lemon tree.
13:44All big lemons.
13:45Yeah.
13:46It's like we're living in an actual place in the sun episode.
13:48It is.
13:49It's an amazing space.
13:50What's not to like about it?
13:52Oh, it's good, isn't it?
13:53It's all done to give the kids an adventure and,
13:57you know, life's too short and, you know.
14:00Well, we know that, don't we?
14:02Yeah, we do.
14:03I mean, that was, yeah, exactly.
14:06You know, I know John lost a very good friend in Dave
14:10and I also lost a good friend around the same time.
14:15John and I both lost friends to cancer.
14:19Dave Myers was one of them, Lil's husband,
14:23and Johnny Irwin was the other.
14:26Johnny and I started our careers in television together.
14:29We kind of grew up together in this industry and losing him
14:36and seeing him taken away so soon, far, far, far too soon,
14:42it's been so hard.
14:45Even harder for his wife and his family.
14:49It just doesn't seem fair.
14:54Johnny was always up for a laugh.
14:58Life and soul of the party.
15:01For us, it was kind of a bit of a wake-up call.
15:06You think you have to do those things that you're dreaming about.
15:10I know that Dave was always the one who would say,
15:12go for it, do it.
15:14Yeah, he never did anything by heart.
15:16No, no.
15:18Him, Johnny, there are 100% moments where you just go,
15:22oh, right, you don't know what's around the corner.
15:26And with that, John and Liliana take a stroll down to the beach.
15:31That house is all about the location.
15:33That's the reason we bought it, I think.
15:35I can totally understand why you and Jasmine chose this,
15:40this corner of the world to be in.
15:42Living somewhere like this is a bit more about trying to have an outdoor lifestyle
15:46and, you know, get more exercise.
15:49And as Dave knew, I had run one or two marathons, foolishly.
15:55But I am planning to run this year's London Marathon
15:59to raise money for the Institute of Cancer Research.
16:02Oh, my God. It's massive. Thank you.
16:04You're very welcome.
16:06Being able to run the London Marathon in memory of Dave
16:10and Jazz's friend Johnny is awesome.
16:13It means a lot to me.
16:14I've got three months to run along this beach
16:17and get ready for the marathon.
16:18As if I didn't have enough to do already.
16:23Being able to show Lil the house, the plans and the beach,
16:28with Dave having been such a driving force and factor for us coming out here,
16:33it means a lot. It means a great deal.
16:35So whilst I am super anxious about the fact that I haven't really started training,
16:40what a better place to train for a marathon than here.
16:44Today, we're going to call Marcia. She's an interior designer.
17:03And John's known her for years and years and years. And they're good friends.
17:10Hello in Spanish. Hola. Hola. Hola.
17:16I think there are always going to be some worries about using someone from the UK.
17:22Equally, if we were using someone local, we'd have different worries.
17:26So I think it's just a question of finding someone that you trust and that you think will be able to listen to your requests and respond accordingly.
17:39Our priority today with Marcia, I think, is to look at the first floor, mainly the kids' bedrooms.
17:46They have quite a strong opinion on what they want.
17:48So we just need a bit of guidance from someone who knows better than we do.
17:54This is our son's bedroom, Albion's bedroom.
17:57We are looking at putting a doorway just here in the corner.
18:01He really likes this bed. It's the only piece of furniture pretty much that we brought with us from the UK
18:08because he was so attached to it.
18:10To be honest, the interior stuff is the stuff that I get really much more excited about.
18:17I love to be able to choose all the different little details and just enjoy finding little amazing things that are just perfect for that space.
18:28His idea for his bedroom, and these are his words, Marcia, he said he wants it to look like a rainbow has vomited in his room.
18:40That's amazing.
18:43It will make it feel like home for them because they've been moved to another completely different landscape, completely different country.
18:51That will be theirs. This is something they've done.
18:53So that's Albie's room. So that gives you plenty to think on, I think, with that.
18:59Loads.
19:00I'm hoping that she's got the vision to be able to do what we want here.
19:07I'll take you through to Joy's room, so you can have a look.
19:13Her idea is she wants a jungle theme.
19:16I think we can make it look really amazing with lots of plants and she wants to have a kind of hammock for all her soft toys.
19:26That's amazing.
19:28Now this is Joy's very own rooftop terrace.
19:34Wow.
19:35It's huge.
19:36It's big, isn't it? Look.
19:37For scale.
19:38That is absolutely...
19:39That's like LA.
19:40That's like...
19:41LA.
19:42So she's got ideas for out here as well, like maybe those kind of hanging chairs so she can sit and read.
19:50The leg chair.
19:51That would be nice.
19:52Yeah, she likes the idea of that, something quite cosy.
19:55And she's also mentioned, I don't know how feasible this is or how much we will indulge our children.
20:02But she said she'd like a river out here.
20:05But maybe some...
20:06Yeah, I'm thinking a river might be...
20:07You're thinking a water feature.
20:08I'm thinking water feature.
20:12These rooms that we've just shown you are our first priority, mainly because none of them need much architectural change.
20:19I think it's an amazing, amazing house. It's such a lovely find. So I'm really excited for you.
20:24Thank you.
20:25Thanks, Marcia.
20:26Lovely.
20:27Lovely.
20:28We thought if anyone can help, you can.
20:31Thank you.
20:32See you later.
20:33Bye.
20:34We had a really, really constructive video call.
20:37We talked about the different styles and the different things that we envision happening in each room.
20:43So hopefully we'll get some quite nice designs.
20:48Back to the build and the lack of materials, such as the door needed to connect Albion's bedroom to the balcony, is starting to cause holdups.
20:56We are very inexperienced with renovations. And, you know, I just found out what a balcony door is called. It's a balconera. I didn't know that. So I was searching online, but not searching for the right thing. So the whole thing has been a learning curve.
21:15However, there's no time as Jasmine's got to head off to work for a few days, leaving John and Carlos to muddle through.
21:24This afternoon, we were slightly at a lack of things to do. So rather than sit around and not do anything, we've decided to rip out a family bathroom in anticipation of fitting the new bathroom suite, the new tiles, etc.
21:43The only small issue is we haven't chosen a new bath suite, new tiles, etc. yet.
21:54Despite already being pretty busy with work, family life and, of course, a rather large home renovation, John now has just a few months to train for the London Marathon.
22:13I've done one or two long runs marathons before for charity. And it's nice. It's good to be able to do something in people's memory. It's good to be able to let their legacy raise a bit of money for charity. And yeah, it's good.
22:31John is running in honour of friends Dave Myers and Johnny Irwin.
22:37I also think running is very good for mental health. It's good to get out and get out and have the motivation to get out into the fresh air and run.
22:47Come on. Come on Astro. Let's do it. This training run is the first one I've probably been on in six months.
22:55Let's do it Astro. Let's do it. Come on, come on, come on. Come on.
22:59You always start, you always start with a strong start Astro pulling me. Then you always end behind me.
23:05First few kilometres are always trickiest to try and stop yourself from having a quick shuffle or a quick walk. But yeah, it'll be fine.
23:19I am looking forward to my first run along the Paseo on the beach. I mean, what a better place to do a run than here.
23:26I managed to get sort of, I think eight to nine kilometres in, which is great considering I haven't trodden on the pavement for six months.
23:45After a few days away on a Place in the Sun shoot, Chasmin's now back.
23:50While John, with the help of their builder, Carlos, has managed to fairly successfully gut the family bathroom.
23:59I mean, we had no plan in place for replacing the bathroom yet. But hey, who needs bathrooms?
24:05A little surprise for me. Not quite sure how I feel about that.
24:10It's fine because we did want to put in a new bathroom. The problem is now we've got an empty bathroom.
24:16And obviously we've got Carlos here. We need to find things for him to do, but we're just not ready.
24:23We are not ready. So it's a little bit stressing me out.
24:28The plan today is for me and John to go and hopefully find some beautiful bathrooms, tiles, taps, the whole shebang. We need everything.
24:38I hate shopping. Unless it's online. I'm not a massive fan of shopping though.
24:45Oh, wow. Look at these.
24:49Bit too bling.
24:51Very, very Costa del Sol. Gold tile.
24:55But that, yeah. That colour faucet.
24:58I love that.
25:00Though I would. I don't know.
25:02But that kind of colour tap.
25:04Honestly, it's giving me a headache already.
25:09I think the problem that I have is, you know, I think the grass is always greener.
25:14So I might see something really nice and then I think, well, I need to look around more.
25:17I need to look around ten different shops to make sure I've got the exact right thing that I want.
25:21I mean, there's just so many options and they're all, you know, there's a lot of nice options.
25:27This is why you need conviction. This is why you just need to make a decision on colour.
25:33Decision on what kind of floor you want and then you nail it down.
25:36OK.
25:37Otherwise you just walk around aimlessly for hours.
25:40Can I have a quick look at just the rest before I make my decision?
25:44And you just follow along.
25:46Yep.
25:51Wood effect floor. Wood furniture.
26:03It's not plumbed in.
26:05I was like, I just have it. My legs hurt after I run this morning.
26:10Having not enjoyed the first bathroom shop that much,
26:13I was a glutton for punishment and agreed to go to a second, bigger, posher bathroom shop.
26:18Swanky.
26:21Mmm.
26:23Very posh.
26:25If Jazz is happy with how things look, then so be it. Let's crack on and buy.
26:33It's all very dark.
26:35Very masculine sort of bathroom, but I must say I like that tap.
26:39Do you have any preference for the style of the Luz?
26:42Square, round, flat top.
26:46I think our next step is to have a look at some of the brochures,
26:49because there are loads of other things that they don't have in the stores.
26:54You know, there's no way they'd have room to display everything.
26:58We need to order a bath.
26:59Back at the house, it's the weekend, and the kids need entertaining.
27:15Tomorrow morning, the concrete truck is coming to fill in the new bit of patio,
27:21and we thought it would be a really fun idea to do a time capsule.
27:26So we are, together with the kids, putting a few things in there,
27:31little pictures, and they're decorating some stones from this year,
27:37which we think will be just quite fun and quite exciting.
27:40I'm writing Astro Dog, aged two and a half, and I'm writing Hazel Cat, aged one.
27:50Dear Finder, my name is Joy, and I am 11 years old,
27:54and I live here in the Costa del Sol.
27:56The current year is 2025.
27:59Self-driving cars have been invented, AI is growing fast,
28:03and clothes, skin care and make-up are increasingly expensive.
28:06I hope that the planet still exists and mankind hasn't killed everything else.
28:11Joy.
28:13Shall we put a few coins in as well from our currency?
28:18Yeah. Put a credit card in.
28:21I'm not putting my credit card in.
28:24There we go.
28:26One day someone might find it.
28:28Hopefully.
28:30That's exciting.
28:32Upstairs, John's surveying the now gutted bathroom,
28:35and even without an actual design or bathroom to install,
28:39it's been keeping Carlos busy.
28:41We discovered there was flaky concrete and the walls were crumbling,
28:46so we've since spent a couple of days getting cement back on the wall
28:52and making the walls good again so we can work from scratch.
28:55So that's more time in the bathroom and more money in the bathroom.
28:59Hurrah!
29:01The next day, with Jasmine off doing a bit of shopping,
29:05John and the team are busy.
29:07The plan this morning is we're just waiting for a cement truck
29:10to deliver quite a lot of cement so that we can pour in the slab of this patio at the front.
29:14The time capsule goes in there until the next generation of people to renovate this house find it.
29:22It turns out that emptying a cement mixer is a slightly more skilled job than I may have given it credit for.
29:28But then again, I don't think you're supposed to do it.
29:34It turns out with just one wheelbarrow and a couple of those big squidgy rubber tub things.
29:42I'm trying to understand, but I think when they came around to look at it,
29:46they said they were going to bring the channel so that it would just pour into the slab.
29:52That definitely hasn't happened.
29:55And now we've got a patio full of cement in the wrong place.
29:58Deja, deja te va, deja te va.
30:01Deja te va.
30:03Mas.
30:05Mas.
30:06Mas.
30:07Mas.
30:08Okay.
30:10Carlos seemed very chilled about it, given we had copious amounts of cement
30:16pouring towards us down a tube.
30:19I was running around like a lunatic with a bucket, panicking.
30:22The outcome is what we wanted, but getting there was not quite as straightforward.
30:29Goodbye, time capsule.
30:32There was definitely a moment of panic when I thought I was about to be covered in cement on the patio.
30:38I thought I'd be buried, not just the time capsule.
30:41Whatever happens, we're ingrained in this property forever,
30:44until another generation or civilisation knocks this place down and finds.
30:52Tiny little Lego figure and a couple of stones.
30:58As it's so thick, it's going to take four or five days for that cement to dry.
31:03But upstairs, the family bathroom is now ready for Jasmine to make some solid plans.
31:08We've been trying to figure out where everything's going to go in this bathroom.
31:13So in Spain, normally you have the entire bathroom tiled from floor to ceiling.
31:23Don't know if we're going to do the whole room.
31:25But yeah, we're just trying to decide.
31:28So I'm just marking it out to see how it's all going to look.
31:32Make sure everything's going to fit.
31:33I hope I've got the measurements right.
31:37I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
31:40I'm going basically straight along to there.
31:44If it doesn't fit, I would blame John.
31:59Reminds me of the old days in East London.
32:01Graffitiing on the walls.
32:11Down the corridor, the door to connect Albion's bedroom to the balcony has finally arrived and work can begin.
32:17When we ordered the door that we're fitting today, it said one to two days delivery.
32:25I think in actual fact, it took about eight or nine days delivery.
32:29So we're kind of learning that we need to build in a big contingency when we order stuff and that not necessarily to believe what it says when we order it.
32:37But it's fine. It's really early days.
32:39I mean, it does look like I'm just standing here watching though.
32:49That's kind of because that is exactly what I am doing.
32:57Bien, bien.
33:01Already as soon as you walk in that room, you're like, wow, lighter.
33:04Not to sound like a place in the sun house hunter, but that room is now lighter and brighter.
33:10Now we're going to try and make good and get the door in.
33:14I say we.
33:16And a few hours later, the royal we have it fitting like a glove, ready for the edges to be tidied up and painted.
33:34What does every renovation need?
33:37It needs someone end up in hospital with a fractured leg early on in the build.
33:45Last night went for an innocent game of paddle, paddle tennis, and somehow managed to take a nasty fall and fracture my left leg.
33:56John's broken his leg in two places, tibia and fibula.
34:05It doesn't seem possible or real that that sort of an injury could have happened whilst playing paddle.
34:12How?
34:16I've never broken anything in my life before.
34:19And to be honest, it's quite painful.
34:23I'm currently in hospital waiting for the prognosis, but it looks like they might have to operate and it looks like I might be immobile for quite a few weeks, if not months.
34:34A double break in the leg is extremely serious. He's going to be out of action for everything.
34:46Indeed, with so much ahead of them, time and finances already stretched, this could bring everything to a halt.
34:54With nowhere else to turn, Jasmine calls on her mum.
34:58When I told my mum on the phone that John had broken his leg, she was so worried.
35:07We had a chat, put the phone down, half an hour later she texted me and said, I've booked a flight.
35:15And I was so grateful for her coming over.
35:19I'm Basula, I'm Jasmine Harmon's mum. And as soon as I heard that her husband, John, had broken his leg really badly, I was expecting to be needed.
35:38If there's one person in your life that you can rely on, it's your mum.
35:43And my mum has 100% stepped up to the plate by saying she'll come out and help.
35:48Well, this is the first time I've seen the house.
35:53And because John's in hospital and Jasmine's at work, I've had to let myself in and take a tour on my own.
36:03And it's fantastic. I can see so much potential that I'm really pleased and excited that they're going to be so happy and this is their forever home.
36:15How are you doing?
36:18Aww.
36:20What a happy.
36:22She would drop everything to help family and to have someone so selfless.
36:29My mum is just a lifesaver.
36:32How traumatising.
36:33I can't even express how much that means to me. I haven't got the words.
36:40Thanks you for coming.
36:42Aww.
36:44It was the least I could do.
36:46I'm so sorry for John.
36:48Bye.
36:49I love my grandchildren, my family and they always come first whatever else is going on.
36:56The next morning with John set to stay in hospital for a few days waiting to have an operation and Jasmine booked to film an episode of A Place in the Sun a short drive up the coast, the family slipped back into their routine.
37:20I'm John now for today.
37:25Every time anyone's nice to me I start crying.
37:32In my next door neighbour.
37:34She just offered me, she said, do you need to borrow a wheelchair?
37:38She said, my auntie's got one.
37:40I said yes please.
37:42And I started crying.
37:43When everyone's so nice.
37:46I always think I can do it all but then sometimes something's got to give, hasn't it?
37:58Yeah, I'm not very good at accepting help either.
38:01Are we control freaks?
38:03Are we related?
38:05Oh, now can you go and do the next little laundry?
38:10And mop the basement.
38:12Finish mopping the basement.
38:16A few days later and John is getting ready to come home with two months of bed rest in front of him.
38:23It's four days after my unexpected tumble on a paddle court, which is the last thing we needed.
38:30I am now out of the operation and they've put pins in my left leg and as of today I am discharged.
38:38However, I am unable to walk.
38:42So I'm just waiting for Jazz to finish work to come and pick me up.
38:46Renovating a house, moving to Spain, all of those things, you can't really do it from being sat on a chair or in a wheelchair on a bed.
38:56Not easily anyway.
38:58Let's hope I clear this up soon. Let's hope my old leg down there doesn't take so long to repair.
39:07And I'm back knocking down walls sooner than we think.
39:11There was no ambulance. There was nothing.
39:14I mean, I had to go and pick him up in our car with his leg broken.
39:20I mean, it was really difficult.
39:24Didn't help the fact that it was pouring with rain.
39:28I've actually got a Zimmer frame.
39:37We had to call in help from a few friends.
39:41At the Royal Homecoming.
39:42We feel very lucky and very grateful that we have made some amazing friends here who really stepped up to the plate.
39:53Hi guys. Thank you for being here to help.
39:57The weather was awful.
39:59It was treacherous.
40:00I mean, it's so slippery, that patio anyway.
40:03So dangerous. I thought, oh, he's going to slip.
40:05He's had surgery less than 24 hours ago.
40:09The red carpet.
40:11I think it took at least half an hour, if not 45 minutes, to get John from the car to the front door.
40:20The best will be if we hold you instead of you going in the morning.
40:25I think we're going to need to move this out of the way.
40:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:28I mean, when you've just broken your leg and you've had a metal rod put in there, it's not exactly easy to get upstairs in the pouring rain without hurting yourself.
40:39Right.
40:40So I'm going to get my butt into that towel.
40:42OK.
40:44Yeah, you two helping really helped earlier.
40:47OK, one, two, and three.
40:50In fact, you two are doing it all.
40:54It's all good.
40:55Perfecto.
40:56So now I need to get up.
40:57We're going to go slowly.
40:59One, two, and three.
41:02Slowly, slowly.
41:04Chair in.
41:05Chair in.
41:06Chair.
41:08Yeah.
41:09Done.
41:10Give him a bit of help.
41:11No, no, no, no.
41:12No, no, no.
41:13There you go.
41:14Cool.
41:16We can do it.
41:18When we renovate the house, should we put a ramp there?
41:20Yeah.
41:21The whole experience was painful, but the payoff was being at home in my own bed, and most importantly, with my kids.
41:31I'm going to bed, my gorgeous boy.
41:32Let's get you to bed.
41:34Sorry, you didn't.
41:35It's important you to sleep.
41:38You've had lots of drama on late nights.
41:41The moment of sitting in my bed and having my kids cuddle up to me was, yeah, it was pretty special.
41:46It was worth the pain.
41:49Having never broken anything before, I've gotten to the age of 45 with a fairly clean bill of health.
41:55I can, hand on heart, say that was very painful.
41:59I genuinely didn't think that I would be putting my really poor level of Spanish to use so quickly at a medical hospital level.
42:08I mean, I'm not joking.
42:10At one point I was having to try and use Translate to work out how you say, can I have another bottle to pee in, please?
42:17You know, you don't learn that even on the best language apps.
42:22The next day, with John unable to leave his bed and Vasula in control of everything at home, Jasmine is back on location.
42:38Prices have risen by as much as 20% over the last year.
42:43Oh, sorry, let me start again from the beginning.
42:45It's OK.
42:46I'm finding it hard to concentrate on work.
42:48I think, you know, when you're away, kind of out of sight, out of mind.
42:53But now I know he's just down the road, I kind of, I'm having trouble focusing a little bit at work.
43:00I just want to sort of get everything done so that I can get back to him and to the kids.
43:05No, I do, I love orange juice, but it's a prop, we're not allowed to drink it.
43:08For a few days, life carries on, but with Jasmine's shoot coming to a close, her mum is heading back to the UK.
43:17Thank you.
43:21Quite sad to leave Jasmine tomorrow because I'm worried about Jasmine being overworked and overwhelmed with the amount of work she will have to do.
43:31To be honest, this accident has thrown a little bit of a spanner in the works on the renovation because we were all ready on the back foot and trying to catch up with ourselves with ordering things, having things delivered.
43:46I have actually told Carlos just to have a break because I couldn't cope with the renovation, with work, with the kids, with, you know, going to the hospital, looking after John.
44:01So I just paused everything. The downside of that is obviously we would love to have the place finished by the summer.
44:12But this might mean that it's going to take a lot longer.
44:20My dad has come over for a working holiday.
44:25Look at this, whoa.
44:28Laura is a friend of mine.
44:31Basically, we're doing stucco plastering now.
44:33Yeah.
44:34Could make our millions in Italy.
44:35Adding to your skill set.
44:36Yeah.
44:38Jazz has definitely pulled it out of the bag.
44:40Shall we?
44:45It's so cool.
44:58Yeah.
44:59No.
45:04Maybe.
45:08Yeah.
45:10You mean never?
45:17You.
