11:21Charlie and Lee have each strived to make their designs low maintenance but big impact
11:29I can really now picture these here, both of them
11:32It's up to Jack and Jade to decide which they will go for
11:36What I love about Lee's idea is the projector screen hidden away in a cupboard
11:41Yeah, I thought you'd like that one
11:43So right next to the barbecue area as well
11:46Yeah, just being able to have the sunbathing spot as well
11:50away from the sport area just means that I don't have to be watching sport as I'm trying to chill out
11:56Charlie's design, what I love, is the shelter over the pergola
12:01Yeah, we can use it all year round
12:02Lee's design also with all these colourful plants will just make the place look so pretty
12:08I love the fact with Charlie's as well about all the plants being up the side
12:12and she said that they're quite strong plants so us playing football won't damage them
12:17Yeah, they're both really thought about every aspect
12:19It's going to be such a hard decision I think
12:20I don't know how we're going to choose this one

12:32Thank you both so much for the designs
12:34They're both absolutely brilliant
12:35We've been toing and froing about which one to choose
12:38and it's been such a hard decision
12:39With Lee's design, I love the idea of the projectile in the screen
12:43They really are mad about sports, aren't they?

12:47Charlie, what we loved about your design was the fact that the pergola was the size it was
12:52and that it had shelter
12:53It means that when it does rain, we don't all have to run inside

12:59It's been a really hard decision, but we've gone for

13:10I wasn't expecting that
13:12I thought they would go for that big party area you had with the bar
13:15Yeah, I'm a bit surprised, I think I gave them too much sports watching and you gave them sports doing

13:23Thankfully, it's Charlie's design, not football skills, that Jack and Jade want

13:31Along with the handiwork of a quack team of landscapers led by project manager Ben
13:36God damn it
13:38They have just two days to rescue Jack and Jade's garden
13:42Okay guys, here we go, start from the house
13:46Now, we have a deck going in just here
13:49Around it, it's surrounded by gravel, but we have the plank paving going in
13:53Moving up, we're then going to have a big patio in this area where we're stood now
13:59And over the top of it, we're going to have a beautiful, chunky pergola
14:03So, shall we just crack on with it?
14:05Yeah
14:05Let's get going
14:06Wow, the song's out
14:07Let's do it
14:07Lovely
14:12We're in
14:13This big, boring space is about to get a lot more interesting
14:19As the team get busy clearing all 140 square metres of it with Andy on digger duties
14:26You definitely need to dig all of this out there
14:31We need to get some depth and some MOT in there for our base
14:34I'm going to put the digging bucket on
14:36Yep
14:36Dig a trench all the way round
14:38Perfect
14:38So we can extend the hardcore
14:40First, Andy and Lee are clearing out that old, uneven lawn
14:45While Jamie and Tori focus on an old, uneven path they've discovered
14:50So the concrete that's come out of this path
14:53We don't want to chuck it in the skip
14:54It's perfect for the base underneath
14:56So we're putting it in there
14:58We're going to compact it completely
14:59So none of it sinks
15:00MOT comes on top of that
15:02Whacker plate that
15:03Perfect base for our new patio
15:05Yeah, and then someone's got to lay it

15:13Before Andy can start laying that patio
15:15Jamie must get the lawn and subservices levelled
15:19While Lee prepares the area for a pergola
15:22Which will have the patio running underneath
15:24Need to get my post holes dug now

15:32So once they're in, Andy can start doing
15:34But he's still busy clearing the site at the minute
15:37So try to get ahead of him now
15:39So we need to be at least 600 deep
15:41So that's about that many then
15:44So we'll get a post in
15:46In Charlie's design
15:50The pergola forms a relaxed sports bar style space
15:53For Jade and Jack to host friends
15:55Lee will plant five 2.4 high metre posts
15:59With solid porcelain tiles running under them
16:02With porcelain, it's not porous on the back of it
16:07So as we tap it down on the mortar, it doesn't get sucked up
16:11We need to put primer on the back of there
16:14So it creates that adhesive bond
16:16Between the slab and the mortar in there
16:19So I'm going to prime the back of the slab
16:20Ready for Andy to lay
16:22With the frame of that social, sporty pergola taking shape

16:30Andy's ready to start laying the 11 square metres of tile underneath
16:35That's the first one down
16:38Charlie's design uses wood, porcelain, stone, lawn
16:42As well as plants
16:44To create distinctive areas for playing and watching sport
16:47And relaxing as a young family
16:50There's just no time for Lee and Jamie to relax though
16:55Five hours in
16:56And the next job is to screw a frame to hold joists for a raised deck
17:01That will replace the old concrete step at the exterior of the house

17:51The whole team have the foundations of the sports-themed design underway
17:55And Ben and Andy strive to get that connective boardwalk positioned

19:34Whilst the back half of the garden
19:37Will be dedicated to pure lawn

19:44Is just all grass

19:47Jade and Jack
19:48Have got a child on the way
19:50So Jade's pregnant
19:51So this space
19:52I wanted to be an area
19:54Where they can put up a tent
19:56Or play badminton
19:57Or even wander down
20:00And under the shade of the oak tree

20:03With the baby
20:04So this area
20:05Is going to be very versatile
20:07Which is ideal
20:08With a young family
20:09At the entrance to the garden

20:54And not cut regularly

21:22And then just do a very light cut

21:31The area needs
21:32All weeds

21:35To weeding out brambles
21:37Yes they're prickly
21:39But you can get rid of them
21:40Quite easily
21:41As long as you go
21:42Underneath the crown
21:43Of the plant
21:44So you need to get down
21:47And under it
21:49So you can see

21:52Of the plant there
21:53So if you don't get
21:54This lower bit out
21:56You'll find

22:36Marry up with Charlie's area

22:39You'll actually get

22:53To check the soil
22:54Once you've broken through

23:03And the way that
23:04You test soil
23:04Is you just squeeze it
23:06If it turns into
23:07Really thick fudge
23:08It's heavy clay
23:09If it's gritty
23:10And folds to bits
23:11It's sandy
23:11And ideally
23:12You need a mix
23:13If you've got
23:14Really heavy clay
23:14You can just add
23:15Some compost
23:16Or some well-rotted manure
23:17To break it up
23:18Meaning that
23:18Whatever you're planting
23:19Is going to thrive
23:20But this soil
23:22Is looking pretty good
23:22So I think
23:23I've dropped quite lucky

23:24I can pick something

24:47To cut them down to half size
24:48So as you get down to this bit
24:49Where the detail of the shrubs are
24:51The paving gets a little bit skinnier

25:06With the help of Lee
25:07Charlie is cementing in pergola posts
25:10With some design tweaks
25:11For the border to the back lawn
25:13Sometimes it's good to think
25:16Oh actually what I could do
25:18Is slightly change this
25:19And it'll just enhance the design
25:21And be practical at the same time
25:22So what we have done
25:24Is put in these chunky timbers
25:27Between the two uprights
25:28On each side
25:29One it adds detail to the design
25:31Keeping it quite modern
25:32But the practical side
25:34Is that is a gravel path
25:35So it stops the gravel
25:37From travelling into this flower border
25:39And then we're going to put
25:40Another piece of timber
25:41Along the edge there
25:42So that the gravel
25:43Doesn't go into the lawn
25:45I'd like to claim
25:47That I came up with that idea
25:49But I didn't
25:51Adding boards to the bottom
25:57Of the extension
25:58Will add a further sense of space
26:00A feature that sold Charlie's design
26:03For Jade and Jack
26:04I think it'll be a massive difference
26:06In our garden
26:07Where when we have the pergola
26:08In the summer time
26:09We can have all our friends round
26:10Get a barbecue going
26:12It just means that
26:13Even when it does rain
26:14We can still use the garden
26:15Our only real worry
26:17With the pergola social area
26:19Would be
26:19That our friends like it too much
26:21And never leave
26:22I think they'll be wanting
26:23To come round every weekend
26:25We won't be able to get them out

26:55Because that's the space for the barbecue

30:48Is clematis sometimes get a disease called
30:51Clematis wilt
30:52And if you plant them slightly deeper
30:55So about an inch down
30:56If the top dies off
30:59You'll sometimes quite often get reshooting from the base

31:06Is rather than have it go up and over the roof
31:09I would train it up and along the fence
31:13So it'd go all the way along there

32:23And that's because it is just a blob of green
32:26For most of the year

32:27For this purpose
32:28To screen off the ugly wall
32:30It's going to serve a great function
32:32Of disguising this part of the garden
32:34And also
32:35Making them feel really comfortable
32:37When they're sat on the deck
32:38Because it doesn't feel as exposed
32:39But I think with this there
32:41Maybe a few Carex grasses underneath it
32:43I've created almost a pocket garden
32:45Within Charlie's garden
32:46And I think she's going to love it
32:48Yeah, I like that
32:57I'm putting in a shrub

33:05Viburnum opalis roseum
33:09Commonly known as snowball plants

33:15These gorgeous white balls of flowers

33:24But it can get quite large
33:25Up to four metres
33:26But it's really easy to grow
33:29And the great thing about it
33:31Is when it flowers
33:32It is always absolutely covered
33:36So it's got great impact
33:37And it can go in full sun
33:40Or dappled shade
33:42And it looks lovely
33:45And it's got a real sort of wow factor
33:47This border is starting to look really lovely
34:01And one of the main reasons for that
34:03Are the plant choices that Charlie's made
34:05Now, because they're relatively new to gardening
34:08We don't want to scare them off
34:10We've picked a whole plethora of plants
34:12That are really easy to look after
34:14And also don't mind poor soil
34:15What's really clever
34:17Is using colour theory
34:19To calm down parts of the garden
34:20And what Charlie's done
34:22Is she's limited it
34:23She's only chosen different variants of pink
34:26Running throughout the border
34:27So then to provide some pops of interest
34:29She's used white
34:31So as we look through the border
34:32It's pretty much pink, pink, pink, pink
34:34With the odd pop of white
34:35And then the odd contrast of blue
34:37From the ceanothis
34:38So this kind of colour scheme
34:41That's really calming
34:41Is going to be perfect
34:42For this adult part of the garden
34:44Now this is going to be my feature pot
34:58At the end of the long lawn
35:00So I wanted something that looked quite dramatic
35:02And will draw Jack and Jay's eyes straight away
35:06And evergreen
35:07So I thought I'd go for this
35:09Trachycarpus fortunii
35:11It's one of the hardiest palms to grow in the UK
35:15So I'm going to pop that in
35:17I need to get a bit more compost in there
35:18But the other thing I wanted to do
35:20Because Jack and Jade are new to gardening
35:24What I have thought about doing
35:26Is actually planting around the base
35:28With bedding plants
35:29Because everybody loves going to the garden centre
35:32And buying bedding plants
35:35One or two pots
35:37Nice and easy to look after
35:39And it does mean that they can change
35:41The colour scheme
35:42As they go along
35:44You know what Charlie
35:50It looks like you had a plant goal in it there
