Andrew Cuomo Concedes: Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded defeat to Zohran Mamdani, who made history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor. In a fiery concession speech, Cuomo warned that the city was “heading down a dangerous road” and slammed what he called “promises that cannot be met.” He also defended law and order, vowing that “we will not make the NYPD the enemy.” The moment turned tense when Cuomo’s crowd booed Mamdani’s name — prompting him to snap back, “That is not us.” Despite the sharp tone, Cuomo pledged to help the new administration “any way we can” for the sake of New York’s unity.

00:15Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:23You're taking my time, you're taking my time.
00:29First, let me, let me, let me, I love you too.
00:35I love you too.
00:37Let me acknowledge part of my special campaign team.
00:41We have from the right, Pella Flunderval,
00:44the new son-in-law, husband of Mariah.
00:48We have Mariah, Cara, Michaela.
00:54I want to thank our campaign chairman, Bill Monroe,
01:00our great campaign manager, Greg Goldner.
01:04I want to thank Mayor Adams, who stepped out of the race to make us more competitive.
01:14And that was a very gracious thing to do.
01:17I want to thank Mayor Bloomberg, who gave us his support.
01:21Governor David Patterson, all the unions.
01:25And I am blessed, I am blessed to have the people in this room.
01:33You have been a phenomenal team.
01:37Great friends.
01:38You are superstars.
01:41Even more, you are New York patriots.
01:44And I am proud of you.
01:46This campaign, this campaign was the right fight to wage.
01:58And I am proud of what we did and what we did together.
02:03This campaign was to contest the philosophies that are shaping the Democratic Party,
02:12the future of this city, and the future of this country.
02:22And this coalition transcended normal partisan politics.
02:27It brought together Democrats and Republicans and Independents,
02:32joined by the simple fact that their first allegiance is as citizens of New York City.
02:46Two million voters, the largest number in modern political history,
02:52political history cared enough to show up in a municipal election.
02:58And 42% voted for us on an independent line.
03:09That is the highest percentage in modern history.
03:14Ironically, it is just higher than when Mario Cuomo got 40% on an independent line
03:27against Ed Koch in 1977.
03:33It is also important to note that almost half of New Yorkers
03:39did not vote to support a government agenda that makes promises that we know cannot be met.
03:50We support an economy of jobs, of opportunity, of entrepreneurship.
03:56That's what New York is.
03:59And that's what New York must remain.
04:04We are a nation of laws.
04:06And we believe in law and order.
04:09And we need the police to keep society safe.
04:17We will not make the NYPD the enemy.
04:25We cherish, we cherish our diversity.
04:28And we have no tolerance for discrimination of any kind by race, religion, sexual orientation, or creed.
04:38And we will not tolerate any behavior that fans the flames of anti-Semitism or diverse attacks.
04:47Our strength, our strength is our unity.
04:58Black, white, brown, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist.
05:02We are one.
05:04We are the family of New York.
05:06We believe in interconnection and mutuality and co-dependence.
05:10And you attack one of us, you attack all of us.
05:15That is what it means to be a New Yorker.
05:18No one and nothing will ever divide us.
05:26And this campaign was necessary to make that point.
05:31A caution flag that we are heading down a dangerous, dangerous road.
05:42Well, we made that point.
05:44And they heard us.
05:46And we will hold them to it.
05:49Also, my friends, feel proud.
05:57Because we accomplished the two important New York characteristics.
06:03We got up off the mat after the primary.
06:07And we made it a real race when the media had already commenced a coronation.
06:13And feel proud because we fought our hearts out and we left it all on the field.
06:31Congratulations to Zoran Mandami.
06:35No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, that is, no, that is not right.
06:47That is, hey, that is not right.
06:50And that is not us.
06:52That is not us.
06:54Tonight was their night.
06:56And as they start to transition to government,
07:00we will all help any way we can because we need our New York City government to work.
07:08We want it to work for all New Yorkers because our city is the greatest city in the world.
07:16And we will unite for New York City because we love New York City.
07:22And from the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you.
07:27I love you for the fight you made, for the soul that you showed, and the example that you set.
07:38New York City heard us.
07:41And we will be the better for it.
07:43Thank you and God bless you.
