Democrats will hold onto the governorship of New Jersey as Rep. Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the most closely watched gubernatorial race of the year, offering her party a much-needed boost after months of political uncertainty under the Trump Administration.

00:00Well, they always say we're loud, but man, with this vote, you guys just scream from the rooftops.

00:18And people around the country have heard you.

00:24I hear you too.

00:26This was a tough fight, and this is a tough state, but I know you, New Jersey, and I love you.

00:39I've fought for you.

00:41I've spoken with thousands of you over this last year.

00:45I know your struggles.

00:47I know your hopes.

00:49I know your dreams.

00:50So serving you is worth any tough fight I have to take on, and I am incredibly honored to be your next governor.

01:01Liberty and prosperity.

01:04I've seen the genius in that motto over the last year, because both are essential in our democracy.

01:11And as the president is backing away from this ideal, cutting snap, ripping away health care, terminating gateway,

01:19we here in New Jersey are bound to fight for a different future for our children.

01:25We see how clearly important liberty is.

01:34We know that no one in our great state is safe when our neighbors are targeted, ignoring the law and the Constitution.

01:42But prosperity is equally essential.

01:44Liberty alone is not enough if the government makes it impossible for you to feed your family,

01:49to get a good education, or to get a good job.

01:51So in this country, that shouldn't be too much to ask.

01:56But right now, all of it seems at risk.

01:59Governors have never mattered more.

02:07And in this state, I am determined to build prosperity for all of our citizens.

02:16And I've heard from thousands of you about what liberty and prosperity mean to you.

02:20What it's going to take for your family to thrive.

02:25So I hear you, Newark.

02:27I'm going to work with communities from the ground up so all of our neighbors thrive.
