00:00Lions, tigers, and bears reportedly clinging to survival after years at an abandoned zoo
00:10in Argentina are finally getting some help. According to the Associated Press, the now
00:17shuttered zoo on the outskirts of Buenos Aires first closed in 2020 due to safety concerns.
00:23Since the zoo's closure five years ago, the conditions for captive animals has only grown
00:29worse. They've survived with the help of a few zookeepers who, despite losing their jobs,
00:35have remained at the zoo to care as best they can for the remaining animals. The numbers have
00:39dwindled from a high of 136 cats when the zoo first closed to now just dozens. Around half of the
00:46animals have died due to factors including poor nutrition, injuries, infections, and neglect.
00:52And these two are broken off. And here on this side, it's also heavily inflamed with a lot of
00:58pests. So this is really an acute infection, which is for sure really painful. Now, officials with
01:04four paws, an animal welfare organization, are working to assess and treat each animal individually
01:11before transferring them to the organization's sanctuaries around the world. Volunteers say
01:17it's a monumental effort. Have a lot of experience also in such situation, but this is sure a more
01:23bigger challenge as we have more big cats. It's considered one of the biggest mission I will
01:27consider with medical examination, not only in Argentine or Latin America, but worldwide to examine
01:33within three weeks over 64 wild animals. So I think this is really a huge challenge. Following an
01:39individual evaluation for each animal, four paws will then release them into natural habitats at
01:45sanctuaries. Argentina agreed to commit to ending the sale and ownership of exotic cats in the nation
01:51as part of a deal for four paws to take over operations and facilitate the transfer of the animals
01:57to natural habitats around the globe. For more on this story, download the Straight Arrow News app or visit
