00:37Barbara and I are delighted to be here again to share fellowship with you

00:40and to draw your attention to God's precious word.

00:45Listen to the words of Psalm 100.

00:49Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.

00:54Worship the Lord with gladness.

00:57Come before him with joyful songs.

01:00Know that the Lord is God.

01:03It is he who made us, and we are his.

01:07We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

01:12Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise.

01:17Give thanks to him, and praise his name.

01:21For the Lord is good, and his love endures forever.

01:28His faithfulness continues through all generations.

01:32Some of you will know that I worked in retirement for a few years for Wycliffe Bible Translators,

01:40doing two days a week, and that was a great privilege, a great opportunity.

01:45But I always have to say this, I'm not a Bible translator, okay?

01:51So don't ask me any hard questions about translation, because I probably couldn't answer you.

01:56My job was church-related.

01:58Having spent my life in pastoral ministry, then I felt I could be useful in making contact with churches,

02:09or serving the churches, and sharing interest in the work of Wycliffe among different churches,

02:15and getting news about what's happening.

02:19I always like to share a little bit about what's going on in these days.

02:23I've also got a couple of spare magazines up here.

02:28They're, anybody's who would like them.

02:30They're thrilling to read, encouraging events taking place, and plenty to pray about in them as well.

02:38Well, it's thrilling to know that the work goes on, amazingly.

02:45The annual report, if you want to read it in full, go online to Wycliffe,

02:51and you'll see a copy of the annual report.

02:55That's where I had to go, because my proper copy hasn't come through the post yet.

03:02But what was thrilling was this, that during the last year, that's 24-25,

03:0823 new Bibles have been completed, and 95 new New Testaments.

03:16That's about one every three days.

03:19So that's progress in translation.

03:22It means that 197 million now have the whole Bible for the first time, that's this year,

03:32and 54 million now have the New Testament for the first time.

03:38And that's really encouraging.

03:41God's Word is spreading.

03:43Bible translation is speeding up in many ways.

03:47And many people are being one for the Lord Jesus Christ.

03:52One little story, because you can have lots of stories, but I'm here to preach the Word.

03:57So this comes back from August this year, and it concerns the Aqabu New Testament.

04:08That's a people group in Togo.

04:11And the New Testament was launched, or celebrated, or dedicated then.

04:17And there was a man called Kuda Jovi.

04:22And this man was a motorcycle mechanic.

04:24And he was there, and the service had an impact on his life.

04:31He says, I'll read some of his words, I was born into a pagan family, and therefore a pagan myself.

04:39But on the day the New Testaments were dedicated, I was there.

04:44And it had a great impact on him.

04:46Amazingly so.

04:50That night, he says, I had a disturbing dream.

04:54A huge man dressed in white approached me.

04:57He was holding that same book in his hands, and handing it to me, saying,

05:04Take it, take it, take it.

05:06This is life.

05:08I took it, he says.

05:10And at that moment, I woke up.

05:12He says, the dream moved me deeply.

05:16And the way the man spoke to me with such authority and gentleness, convinced me to change my life.

05:24I decided to abandon my old ways.

05:26I bought the book, and accepted Jesus as my Saviour.

05:31I give thanks to God for this transformation.

05:35And I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this project.

05:39This book is a blessing.

05:41And I trust it is to you as well.

05:45And there are lots more stories like that if you look at the Wycliffe website.

05:49And it's worth looking at and being encouraged and challenged by it.

05:55So let's turn again to God's Word.

05:59And our passage for this evening.

06:021 Peter, chapter 1.

06:03Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to God's elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,

06:19who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father through the sanctifying work of the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood.

06:34Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

06:40In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.

06:57This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

07:14In all this, you greatly rejoice, though now, for a little while, you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

07:28These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes, even though refined by fire, may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.

07:47Though you have not seen him, you love him, and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

08:05for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

08:13Concerning this salvation, the prophets who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,

08:26trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing,

08:35when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow.

08:41It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you,

08:49when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit,

09:00sent from heaven.

09:03Even angels long to look into these things.

09:07Therefore,

09:09with minds that are alert and fully sober,

09:15set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.

09:24As obedient children,

09:27do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance,

09:32but just as he who called you is holy,

09:38so be holy in all you do,

09:43for it is written,

09:45be holy,

09:46because I am holy.

09:50Since you call on a Father

09:52who judges each person's work impartially,

09:56live out your time as foreigners here

09:59in reverent fear,

10:01for you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver and gold

10:08that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,

10:16but with the precious blood of Christ,

10:20a lamb without blemish or defect.

10:24He was chosen before the creation of the world,

10:29but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

10:35Through him,

10:37you believe in God

10:39who raised him from the dead

10:42and glorified him,

10:44and so your faith and hope

10:47are in God.

10:50Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth

10:54so that you have sincere love for each other,

11:00love one another deeply

11:02from the heart.

11:05For you have been born again,

11:08not of perishable seed,

11:10but of imperishable

11:12through the living

11:13and enduring

11:15word of God.

11:17For

11:18all people

11:20are like grass,

11:22and all their glory

11:24is like the flowers of the field.

11:27The grass withers

11:28and the flowers fall,

11:32but

11:32the word of the Lord

11:34endures forever,

11:36and this

11:38is the word

11:40that was preached

11:41to you.

11:44God grants us understanding

11:45of his precious

11:47and powerful

11:48word.

11:51You might like to turn again

11:52to 1 Peter chapter 1.

11:57Don't expect too much tonight.

11:59When I heard it was 1 Peter chapter 1,

12:03I thought,

12:04are they expecting me

12:05to expound the whole chapter?

12:07Well,

12:08I'll do my best,

12:09but there'll be lots of bits left out,

12:10no doubt.

12:11It's a great chapter.

12:13One of my commentators says

12:15it's the

12:16most concise

12:18New Testament

12:19resume

12:20of the Christian faith

12:22and the conduct

12:24that it

12:25inspires.

12:28He also describes it

12:29as a

12:30model

12:30pastoral

12:32letter.

12:32There's a lot

12:34here for us

12:35and

12:36I really want

12:38to cheat

12:39in a way

12:39and start

12:40at the end.

12:41Why was this letter

12:42written?

12:44Well,

12:44go to chapter 5

30:21and sometimes

30:22maybe you've

30:23never found

30:24this

30:24sometimes

30:25you know

30:26Christmas

30:27can be a

30:28flop

30:29Christmas

30:30often brings

30:32family tensions

30:33and difficulties

30:34and disappointments

30:37it isn't

30:39what you

30:40hope for

30:41oh how

30:42different

30:43for us

30:43as we

30:45hope in

30:45Christ

30:46through those

30:46trials

30:47and troubles

30:48we look

30:49forward

30:49because you're

30:50receiving

30:50the end

30:52result of

30:52your faith

30:53the salvation

30:54of your

30:56souls

30:57and we

30:57rejoice in

30:58that

30:59and we're

31:00glad about

31:01that

31:01and we

31:02long

31:02for that

31:03and it's

31:05interesting

31:07the prophets

32:23we wish

32:24we could see

32:25how it's going

32:25to work out

32:26on some

32:27issues

32:28Christians

32:29good Christian

32:29people have

32:30different

32:30views

32:31and sometimes

32:32sadly they

32:32fall out

32:33about it

32:34and that's

32:34a tragedy

32:35we need to

32:36be united

32:37and acknowledge

32:38that we don't

32:38know all the

32:39answers

32:39God knows

32:40the answers

32:41he works

32:41his purposes

32:42out

32:42and we're

32:43to accept

32:44his word

32:45and to walk

32:46with him

32:47whatever

32:47happens

32:49and

32:50doesn't it

32:52tell you

32:52here in these

32:53verses too

32:53as we

32:54think about

32:56what the

32:56prophets

32:56said

32:57well that

32:58they discover

32:58that

32:59it wasn't

33:01for them

33:02it was for

33:03those who

33:04would follow

33:04in other

33:05words for

33:05us

33:06for Peter

33:07the believers

33:08then

33:08we know

33:09so much

33:10more

33:11than those

33:12ancient

33:13prophets

33:13knew

33:14but that's

33:16the work

33:16of God

33:17the Holy

33:17Spirit

33:18those who

33:19gospel

33:21Holy Spirit

34:48hope on the

34:49grace to be

34:49brought to

34:50Jesus is

34:51revealed

34:52at his

34:53coming

34:53we're to

35:01challenged
