00:00As energy demand surges across Southeast Asia, regional cooperation is more important than ever.
00:07At Singapore International Energy Week 2025, experts are pointing to the ASEAN power grid
00:14as a key to a more secure and sustainable energy future.
00:18Farhana Sheh reports from Singapore.
00:21I am reporting from Singapore International Energy Week's EU 2025,
00:26where energy security, sustainability and regional cooperation are at the center of discussions.
00:33Now, the ASEAN power grid is seen as a key enabler of the region's clean energy transition,
00:39designed to connect power systems across borders, improve energy access and enhance resilience against supply shocks.
00:47If you share your resources, you can delay your infrastructure,
00:53like building a power plant, building another transmission network, your grid.
00:59If you have a strong interconnected system with your universal.
01:04So, those money can save, can reduce the cost of energy in a country like Malaysia.
01:12And energy security, you know, what will be the cost?
01:15If I may ask you, what will be the cost implication to the economy if you have a blackout?
01:21It's massive, it's huge.
01:23So, those security costs can be shared among ASEAN members.
01:30Financing the ASEAN power grid remains a key challenge,
01:33as countries balance national priorities with regional goals.
01:37Razib says the approach must be equitable,
01:39where every member state benefits fairly from shared infrastructure and resources.
01:43I believe the market will determine the pricing and the cost and everything has to be fair.
01:53So, I take example, Laos, we always say Laos is a battery for the South Asian, for the ASEAN.
02:01So, if they were to sell the power to their neighboring countries,
02:05they will get, you know, whatever the right price for their resources,
02:09especially the hydro resources, and Vietnam, they have a lot of wind resources,
02:14so they will get the right price.
02:15So, it's all based on the commercial and the market that we're going to design properly.
02:22So, to answer you, yes, it is a thing that we are going to work fairly,
02:29and open, and transparent,
02:32and to the satisfaction of all ASEAN member states.
02:36As ASEAN looks to meet rising electricity demand and cut reliance on fossil fuels,
02:42the power grid could be a game-changer,
02:44if countries can align policies and investment priorities.
