00:00I cannot call Sicilian semi-open. For me, it's the most open position one can hope for.
00:07I will go over some of the personal experiences in more detail in a case study,
00:13just to give you more insight in the way I made decisions in some of the openings.
00:19But now we're just looking at this, sort of the whole story of my professional chess life,
00:26of this journey, from the kid in Baku who first learned from David Braunstein 200 open games
00:33and then learned from his first teacher how to play Skeveningen
00:37and then learned from another teacher how to play Karakhan
00:42and just, you know, recognizing that you can play E4 and then also D4.
00:47And by the way, in E4, for a while, I was under a strong influence of Fischer
00:51and in Rumi Lopez, I took on C6.
00:55That was quite popular.
00:57It's hard to imagine that this was a very popular move
00:59and I kept playing it for a few years.
01:01And then I remember Alexander Nikitzen told me,
01:03look, for how long are you going to take this, you know, knight on C6?
01:06You're going to have to play Bishop A4.
01:07This is a real move.
01:09This is, you know, kind of a test for your classical skills.
01:13And I, of course, I switched to Bishop A4 and many, many games in Rumi Lopez
01:17and it was a pretty good result.
01:19I played also, Rumi Lopez was black, but not very often.
01:25I remember the first time I employed it was the match U.S. against the rest of the world
01:29and I had to face Jan Timon at board two.
01:34Board one, Karpov played Ulf Andersen.
01:36I played Jan Timon and I had to face E4
01:43and I knew Karpov would be playing E4 against me
01:45and I didn't want to play C5 against Timon
01:49because it was just before our match was Karpov, first match in 84.
01:52And I played after E4, I played E5.
01:55And everyone was surprised.
01:57I said, look, that's a good opening and world champion Karpov.
