00:48If you were brought up in Central Africa, you'd be believing in the great juju up the mountain.

00:54There's no particular reason to pick on the Judeo-Christian God in which by the sheerest accident you happen to have been brought up

05:55Well, anytime someone describes their understanding of God,

06:00typically it involves some statement of benevolence.

06:05And I look out to the universe.

06:07Yes, it is filled with mysteries.

06:08But it's also filled with all manner of things

06:11that would just as soon have you dead.

06:14Like asteroid strikes and hurricanes and tornadoes and tsunamis

06:17and volcanoes and disease, pestilence.

06:21There are things that exist in the natural world

06:24that do not have your health or longevity as a priority.

06:27And so I cannot look at the universe and say

06:30that yes, there's a God and this God cares about my life at all.

06:36The evidence does not support this.

06:38But...

06:38Do you give them an A at least for trying to reconcile faith and reason?

06:42I don't think they're reconcilable.

06:46Efforts that have been invested

06:48by brilliant people of the past

06:52have failed at that exercise.

06:55They just fail.

06:56And so I don't...

06:57The track record is so poor

06:59that going forward I have essentially zero confidence.

07:03Near zero confidence

07:04that there would be fruitful things to emerge

07:08from the effort to reconcile it.

07:12So, for example,

07:13if you knew nothing about science

07:16and you read, say, the Bible, the Old Testament,

07:20which in Genesis is an account of nature.

07:22That's what that is.

07:23And I said to you,

07:25give me your description of the natural world

07:27based only on this.

07:30You would say the world was created in six days

07:33and that stars are just little points of light

07:35much lesser than the sun.

07:37In fact, they can fall out of the sky, right?

07:39Because that's what happens during Revelation.

07:41One of the signs that the second coming

07:43is that the stars will fall out of the sky

07:45and land on Earth.

07:47So it's even right that means

07:49you don't know what those things are.

07:52You have no concept

07:54of what the actual universe is.

07:57So everybody who tried to make proclamations

08:00about the physical universe

08:01based on Bible passages

08:03got the wrong answer.

08:05So what happened was

08:07when science discovers things

08:08and you want to stay religious

08:10or you want to continue to believe

08:12that the Bible is unerring,

08:15what you would do is

08:16you would say,

08:16well, let me go back to the Bible

08:17and reinterpret it.

08:18Then you'd say things like,

08:19oh, they didn't really mean that literally.

08:21They meant that figuratively.

08:22So this whole sort of reinterpretation

08:25of how figurative

08:27the poetic passages of the Bible are

08:29came after science showed

08:33that this is not how things unfolded.

08:37And so the educated religious people

08:39are perfectly fine with that.

08:41It's the fundamentalists

08:43who want to say that the Bible

08:45is the literally, literal truth of God

08:48and want to see the Bible

08:51as a science textbook

08:52who are knocking on the science doors

08:54of the schools

08:56trying to put that content

08:58in the science room.

09:00Enlightened religious people

09:01are not behaving that way.

09:03They're saying, yes, science is cool,

09:04we're good with that.

09:04And use the Bible

09:06to get your spiritual enlightenment

09:08and your emotional fulfillment.

09:10But do you have any sympathy

09:12for people who seem to feel,

09:14only feel safe

09:15in the vastness of the universe

09:17you describe in your show

09:19if they can infer?

09:20I don't care what you think.

09:24I just don't.

09:26Go think whatever you want.

09:28Go ahead.

09:29Think that there's one gods,

09:31two gods, ten gods,

09:32or no gods.

09:34The problem arises

09:35is if you have

09:38a religious philosophy

09:40that is not based

09:43in objective realities

09:44that you then want to put

09:45in the science classroom.
