00:00Welcome, one and all, to another episode of the Press Box. My name is Ben Hand.
00:10Joining alongside me once again is Josh Partridge and making his long awaited return from a spell
00:16on the sidelines is Ryan Bentley. It is episode 106 for you guys today. We're well and truly
00:23into the summer of cricket at all levels of the sport and that will be the theme of what
00:29is everyone's favourite segment, numerology. So boys, as we will touch on in just a moment's
00:40time, there was plenty of fronts among all grades and all levels of cricket, carpet and
00:46otherwise, and that's where we will go to the Tasmanian Cricket League, the TCL, Georgetown,
00:52Beaconsfield, obviously the amalgamated clubs in the Premier League have gone off to a fly
00:58haven't they Josh? And led by none other than a former now Georgetown president, or football
01:05club president I should say, Sean Muller, who scored 106 on the weekend in their convincing
01:10win and just a little bit of a double up in case you weren't satisfied with the 106 matching
01:16up with the episode number. He went at a strike rate of 104 but also hit two sixes. So it needed
01:22to be some stretch somewhere. So the 1004 plus the two is 106. So that's the important
01:29I'm not doing all the sixes. So we're not doing two times six or anything like that, that's
01:33just 1004 plus two. So two 106es. I copped some feedback during the week if that's not clear,
01:39Ryan. We will move straight into, well, all the numbers really, Josh. Not just Sean Muller's
01:45great effort. It was really a weekend for the bads. Yeah. There were six centuries scored
01:52on the weekend and funnily enough, Sean's was the sixth highest score of the weekend. Everyone
01:56else seemingly eclipsed that 106. It started with, in first grade, Luke Scott from Mowbray.
02:03He scored 153, not out of 147 balls. So that was his highest one day score. Not it eclipsed
02:09his highest overall score, which is 178. So he had a day to remember. Then in second grade,
02:16Cricket North, Chathura Athakarala went out and scored 140 off 98, I think, off the top of
02:22my head. He hit the ball pretty well as well, funnily enough, if you're going to score something
02:26like that. And then you've got Tristan Weeks for Hadsburn, 118. Alistair Taylor for Launceston,
02:32116. And Joseph Davey for Evandale Panthers, B grade, 108, not out. So I'm not going to
02:38do that. So a lot of scores across the weekend. And two 90s as well. So other blokes knocking
02:43on the door of three figures, but didn't quite get there.
02:47Also, a couple more 90s down in the CTPL as well for Kingbrook. So plenty. And obviously
02:52it sounds like there was maybe just one losing effort. I know Chuka obviously scored 140
02:59in an ultimately losing effort. I think that's one of those times where you can come off where
03:02you're just sort of walking a little bit taller, even though obviously the win is probably...
03:06Exactly, exactly right. That is not the only sport kicking into full gear though. Basketball
03:14is also running at the professional level of the Jackjumpers, which we'll get on to in
03:18just one moment. But of course, at the representative level for Tasmania, Ryan, we've got a couple
03:23of young basketballers making their name on the national stage.
03:26Yes, not just a couple, four of them from Lonnie. A couple of couples. A couple of couples, yes.
03:31Named in the under 20 squad for playing Bendigo at the start of next year. So Jack Smith, Logan
03:37Gibson, Sam Percival and Brodie Wallace will be playing. Jack Smith, I had a chat to him last week
03:43and I mean he's 17 years of age and he's playing under 20. So he can play. He can play the game.
03:49And he talked a lot about, so he's been to the US earlier this year to play AAU, which is like an amateur high school level
03:57where it was a part of an Australian team that got together to try and get them recruited.
04:01And I think he's going to go back next year. And obviously his aspiration is to play for college.
04:07And he cited Rain Smith, who now plays for the Cairns Thai fans, is also playing Saturday as a big inspiration
04:13behind why he wants to play college and showed that it's possible.
04:16Yeah, that's a wonderful story. Of course, going to God's own country in Bendigo, of course.
04:22And the Jackjumpers as well will be heading to Launceston, nearly as good as Bendigo, I'd say.
04:29For their two games at the Silverdome coming up next week.
04:34Starting on Saturday, of course, against the Cairns Thai Pants.
04:37As you mentioned, they've wore rain-smiths to Cairns Thai Pants.
04:40And then playing the South East Melbourne Phoenix the following Thursday.
04:45The game that's just occurred from when we're filming this was against the Sydney Kings at Kudos Bank Arena.
04:51Finishing off a stretch of games where they had to play six out of eight away from home.
04:57And look, 16 points down with eight minutes to go and Bryce Hamilton, your best import, has just fouled out of the game.
05:05Probably not a chance in most people's books, I would have said, Ryan.
05:09But that is, of course, not how Scott Roth and the Jackjumpers work.
05:12They just find a way to stay within the game.
05:16The Kings probably had a few moments they would like to have back, a few missed free throws.
05:20They had possession of the ball in the last play of the game.
05:23So I think they'll probably put that one down as, let's just pretend that never happened.
05:28But Nick Marshall, of course, a new signing.
05:31Having his moment in the sun and scoring really well from close range to get the win.
05:36It's pretty exciting stuff and sort of gets us all into good and Army spirit, doesn't it, Ryan, before the games on the weekend?
05:43You're going to be covering it on Saturday.
05:45Yes, very exciting.
05:47The Jackjumpers, they're looking okay.
05:49I'm liking the imports at the moment.
05:52It would be exciting also to see Ryan Smith back in Tasmania for the first time after four years in the US playing college basketball as well.
05:59So, yeah, Saturday night, I'm assuming it'll be packed out.
06:02Yeah, it always is.
06:03It's a sold out arena.
06:05And as you say, they're looking okay, but they're a team that usually gears up towards the end of the season.
06:10They do have a terrible record at the Silver Dome.
06:13Only two wins from eight attempts and they haven't won since 2023.
06:17So, let's see if they can reverse the curse.
06:20We'll see what they can complain about this time.
06:23Well, there's certainly still some upgrades that still need to be done.
06:26They're not going to quite be done yet.
06:29I'm sure the Jackjumpers have had a few words about that.
06:31But we are going to use their arrival into the north of the state to introduce the segment that really ties the whole show together.
06:41I know Ryan has been missing this greatly while he's been away.
06:44He's been begging for it to be back on the show just to be a part of Hangy's Heart here.
06:49So, fellas, this is a pretty bit of a softball line to be honest.
06:56I'm going to let you guys reminisce.
06:58It's a good sport, man.
06:59Yes.
07:00Yeah, I know.
07:01Getting my balls mixed up.
07:02But it's just your favourite Jackjumpers moment.
07:07I'm going to exclude the championship game.
07:11I'm not going to allow just the championship itself as a moment.
07:16But just a favourite singular or whatever else moment that you guys have of the Jackjumpers.
07:22Josh.
07:23I'll go with Jack McVay's buzzer beater.
07:26That was, everyone, like, it's kind of one of those moments where you go, I remember where I was.
07:32Funnily enough, it was a pretty good weekend for myself too.
07:36But, no, we'd, yeah, it was a brilliant moment.
07:41Not just in Tasmanian sport, but in Australian sport, really.
07:44And, yeah, that's probably where we're sitting.
07:47Yeah, absolutely.
07:48And you, Ryan, anything coming to mind?
07:49I mean, the McVay thing is the only thing that comes to mind I remember.
07:52I think I was at home for Easter, I think.
07:55And I remember watching my parents who don't watch basketball at all watching my parents.
07:59And that was quite a cool moment.
08:01And, like, that whole thing of having a Tasmanian team all of a sudden succeed.
08:05On the national stage of someone who grew up in Tasmania was, I don't know, quite special.
08:10So I can't go past Jack McVay, to be honest.
08:12You're not going to go with, like, the first game, first win or anything like that?
08:16Or, okay, no, very boring.
08:18I'm going to go with the S.H.A. game, the last one where Joe Harris was there.
08:23It was a really emotional win and the scenes at the end was hard not to be very touched by.
08:28And I think has been a great metaphor for, I suppose, what Scott Roth and the Jackjumpers have done with the Tasmanian community
08:36and how well they've connected.
08:38And a lot of that goes down to the head coach.
08:40He's been a true icon of Tasmanian sport, which is really hard to do as an outsider.
08:45I think he deserves a lot of credit.
08:48That will lead us now on to, yeah, I do say that Henny's Hut is the landmark segment.
08:55I've got to be honest, this is right away making its name.
09:00The amount of times we get touched on the street, it's like, where's my mention?
09:07We want to be Josh's Local Hero of the Week, but it can only be one person and here is Josh's Local Hero of the Week.
09:13Local Hero of the Week this week, we kind of touched on it earlier with the cricket, but it is Luke Scott,
09:23obviously with a superb effort for Mowbray.
09:26Former captain, handed over the reins a couple of years ago and wanted to find a way to really enjoy his cricket
09:32and I think scoring 153 off 147 balls might be the way to do that.
09:37So congratulations Luke on becoming Josh's Local Hero of the Week.
09:42And that is all the time we have for this week's episode. We will catch you guys for the next one.
