Police have launched an internal review after a police car was driven through a crowd of protesters in Sydney's CBD. It sparked tense scenes at a rally against a spate of Indigenous deaths in custody, the state's most in a single year.
00:00Jai Wright was just 16 when his life was cut short. Today, his family watched on.
00:08What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!
00:13He was killed in a crash involving an unmarked police car at Everleigh in Sydney's Inner South in 2022.
00:20Police were responding to reports of a stolen trail bike.
00:23An officer has been tried for dangerous driving occasioning the teen's death, with a verdict yet to be reached.
00:29What do we do? Stand up, fight back! What do we do? Stand up, fight back!
00:33The rally was against Indigenous deaths in custody. As demonstrators marched along George Street, there was a commotion.
00:40Step back! Step back! Step back!
00:44Shouting erupted as a police car moved through the crowd.
00:48It was racing and then braking and racing and all the people were there. I'm surprised they did not hit anybody.
00:55Police say the driver was trying to get to the front to lead the protest.
00:59The matter is now the subject of an internal review.
01:02It wasn't the only tense moment during the rally.
01:05Speeches were disrupted, with claims a projectile was hurled at the crowd.
01:09Someone just threw a glass bottle at us over here, so where's the police now when we're being attacked?
01:15Police have reviewed CCTV, but have been unable to find footage of the incident.
01:19The rally follows a rare statement from the state coroner, in which he said 12 Indigenous people had died in custody so far this year, the most ever in a single year.
01:30The state government has previously said it's working to improve safety at correctional centres.
01:35And we see that a lot of people are a statistic of deaths in custody because they're not getting the adequate treatment in relation to, say, type 2 diabetes.
01:41Behind every statistic is a family in agony.
01:44But for all families and all young people to come.
01:48We see that seems to be so diverse, of course, there's a lot of people that have been coming because they're not going to be treated.
01:53And we've been doing so many times in
02:06a year as a relationship.
02:07And we're going to be doing so many times.
02:10We're going to be doing so many times when we're going to arrive.
