Anti-migration protestors and counter demonstrators clash in Canberra and across Australia

Hundreds of anti-migration protestors have clashed with a counter rally in Canberra’s parliamentary triangle today, in which two people were arrested. There were similar scenes across the country including in Melbourne where police had rocks thrown at them and one officer suffered a broken hand.

00:10Around 300 people joined the March for Australia,

00:14which made its way across the Commonwealth Avenue bridge.

00:27Others raised concerns about mass immigration.

00:30Too many people are coming here too quickly and there's not enough housing,

00:34there's not enough services and facilities.

00:36There was also anger about the direction the country is taking.

00:39No infrastructure that's been built in the country at all.

00:42The wages are stagnant, inflation high.

00:45Counter-protesters argued against anti-immigration messages.

00:49There are always benefits from immigration to Australia.

00:51It broadens our cultural base.

00:56Refugees and migrants have contributed hugely to Australian society.

01:06Police worked hard to keep the two groups apart,

01:09arresting two people who were later released without charge.

01:12The rally made its way to the lawns of Parliament House,

01:15where hostilities continued.

01:17We are seeing rents exploding, house prices out of reach, hospitals full, roads jammed.

01:26Similar rallies were held across the country, including in Brisbane and Melbourne,

01:31where police say they were attacked by those protesting against the rally.
