00:55Lassies!
01:00Boy, this is what I call eating and running.
01:04Yes, I'm afraid that emergency call this morning really cut our breakfast short, but we have to get moving. We've got a long flight ahead of us.
01:10I'll say. All the way to Alaska.
01:12Dad, could you tell us a little more about the mission?
01:18Yes, Ben. Why do we have to fly all the way to Alaska to look for a downed airplane?
01:22Because there's more to this mission than simply locating a missing aircraft. The fate of an entire village is at stake.
01:27What do you mean, Dad?
01:29Well, it all started a few days ago in a small North Alaskan village called Bear Claw.
01:33An oil company was drilling an exploratory well nearby.
01:38Everything was going smoothly until an underground pocket of natural gas was struck. It was like sticking a pin into a balloon.
01:45The invisible gas roared out of the drill bore under tremendous pressure.
01:48And then it happened. The thing every oil man dreads. Somehow, the gas ignited.
01:58The village of Bear Claw had to be evacuated immediately, but the fire was completely out of control.
02:05So where does a lost airplane fit in?
02:07The oil company immediately sent for a team of expert firefighters who specialize in oil well fires.
02:13Unfortunately, on their way to Bear Claw, their plane lost radio contact and apparently went down.
02:18And it's up to us to find them and bring them to Bear Claw?
02:21Exactly.
02:21Gosh, I hope they didn't get hurt when their plane crashed.
02:25So do I, Ben. But we won't know that till we locate them.
02:36Do you see something, girl?
02:37I see it, too. Over there.
02:39All right. Let's go take a look.
02:46Those wolves are a bad sign.
02:47Why do you say that? They're probably just hungry.
02:50Oh, I'm sure they're hungry.
02:52But they wouldn't come that close to the plane unless the men inside were in too bad a shape to chase them off.
02:56Or unless the men were no longer in the plane.
02:58See those footprints?
02:59Ben, you're right.
03:00It looks like the men we're after set out on foot for help.
03:03Well, they sure made our job easy.
03:04All we have to do is follow their trail.
03:06Let's hope it's that simple, Susan.
03:09Rescue one calling Bear Claw.
03:11Rescue one calling Bear Claw.
03:12Come in, Bear Claw.
03:17This is Bear Claw.
03:18Go ahead, rescue one.
03:20We've located the missing aircraft, but the occupants have hiked out of the area.
03:24How are things there in Bear Claw?
03:26We're holding on, but we can't get near our homes because of the heat.
03:29I'm afraid that unless this fire stops soon, our whole village is going to go up in flames.
03:35Try to hang on a little longer.
03:37We're going to track down those firefighters now and get them to you as quickly as possible, over and out.
03:45I don't like the looks of those clouds.
03:47From the way this barometer's falling, I'd say we were in for a storm.
03:50We'd better get a radio fix.
03:53Rescue one calling Alaskan Air Control.
03:56Do you read me?
03:59Come in, Alaska.
04:02The weather is deteriorating and we're losing visibility.
04:04Over.
04:07That sounds like electrical interference.
04:09Yeah, there's enough electrical activity in those clouds to scramble any radio transmission within 50 miles.
04:15I don't blame you, Lassie.
04:24I'm scared, too.
04:27I can't see a thing out there.
04:28Ben, we're losing altitude.
04:30I know.
04:31I'm afraid we're icing up.
04:33Icing up?
04:34Yeah, it's so cold.
04:35Ice is forming on the outside of Rescue One.
04:37And the more ice we collect, the heavier we get.
04:40It's no good, Laura.
04:41We can't fly in this storm.
04:43I'm going to set her down.
04:44What do we do now?
04:52We just sit tight and wait it out, Ben.
04:54At least we can keep warm and dry here.
04:57Those poor men we're looking for are somewhere out there in that blizzard.
05:01What's that noise?
05:03Sounds like somebody knocking to get in.
05:05I don't see anything out there.
05:07Neither do I.
05:09Wait a minute.
05:09What's that back by the tail?
05:11Ben, look.
05:11The wind's banging the rotor blade against the fuselage.
05:14We've got to tie down those blades before they cause a lot of damage.
05:18Jackie, Gene Fox, put on something warm.
05:20We're going outside.
05:25Okay, Jackie.
05:26Hand me those tie downs.
05:27Here you go, Dad.
05:28Whoops.
05:30Time.
05:31The wind took it right out of my hand.
05:32Don't worry.
05:33I'll go get it.
05:34I'd rather you didn't, Jackie.
05:36We'll make do with something else.
05:37But it'll only take a minute.
05:39Come on, Lassie and Toothless.
05:42Jackie.
05:43You see the tie down anywhere, Lassie?
05:45I thought I'd pull over this way.
05:48But wait.
05:50Here it is.
05:51Now let's get back before we freeze.
05:53Hey, where do you two think you're going?
05:58The helicopter's over this way.
06:02At least I thought it was this way.
06:07Hey, Dad.
06:08Dad.
06:09Any sign of Jackie yet, Gene Fox?
06:11No, Mr. Turner.
06:12And I'm getting worried.
06:13Me too.
06:14Jackie.
06:16Lassie.
06:17Can you hear me?
06:19It's no use.
06:20This wind just carries the sound away.
06:23I hate to say it, old friends, but I think we're lost.
06:32You mean Jackie's still out there in that storm?
06:35I'm afraid so, Laura.
06:36We tried looking for him, but you can hardly see your hand in front of your face out there.
06:41Why don't you turn on the siren?
06:42Maybe he'll hear it and find his way back.
06:44The siren?
06:45Of course.
06:50Hey, the siren's not working.
06:53Darn.
06:54It must be frozen.
07:02I'm cold too, Toothless.
07:04But at least we're protected from the wind here.
07:07What is it, Lassie?
07:09Do you hear something?
07:11Now I hear it too, but what is it?
07:14Oh, I get it.
07:17You think it's Santa Claus.
07:21Well, I have to admit, this sure looks like his neighborhood.
07:27Whoever it is, here they come.
07:30Help!
07:31Help!
07:31Over here!
07:33Hey, boy.
07:34What are you doing there?
07:36You want to freeze?
07:37Lassie, shh.
07:38It's all right.
07:40I'm afraid we're lost.
07:42Can you help us?
07:43Sure.
07:44I take you to my home.
07:46But your animals must help get us there.
07:48Just tell me what we have to do and we'll be glad to help.
07:51Right, Lassie?
07:51Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop.
07:58Your animals are doing well.
08:00They have pulled sleds before.
08:02No, they've done a lot of things.
08:04But pulling those sleds is something new.
08:09Ah, we're home.
08:10Wow, a real igloo.
08:12Just like we studied about in geography.
08:15We must take your animals inside with us.
08:18They are not used to such cold.
08:20They aren't the only ones.
08:21I'm starting to feel like a snowman.
08:24I feel guilty sitting here so nice and warm while Jackie's somewhere out there in that storm.
08:28I know what you mean, Susan.
08:30But there's absolutely nothing we can do until this wind dies down.
08:33Jackie's a smart boy.
08:35And he's got two highly trained animals with him.
08:37So let's hope for the best.
08:42Boy, does this fire feel good.
08:46My home is your home.
08:48Please stay as long as you wish.
08:51Gee, he saved our lives and I don't even know your name.
08:54I'm Jackie Turner.
08:56My name is Nandi.
08:58This is my wife, Mamoak, and my son.
09:02Nandi, what were you doing out there in that storm?
09:05I was hunting meat.
09:06Then the storm came hunting me.
09:09But I was too fast.
09:10Thank goodness for that or we wouldn't be here.
09:13I think your dog is hungry.
09:15I'm hungry too.
09:16So let's eat.
09:17Hey, that sounds good, Nandi.
09:19What's for lunch?
09:20Fresh blubber.
09:21Here.
09:23Nandi, this meat's raw.
09:25Sure.
09:26That is best way to eat blubber.
09:28It gives you much energy.
09:32Mmm.
09:33Mmm.
09:34Well, what do you know?
09:36It stopped snowing.
09:37And the wind velocity is dropping too.
09:39I'll try the radio again.
09:41Rescue one calling Bearclaw.
09:43Come in, please.
09:43Rescue one, we read you.
09:45Hooray, we finally got through.
09:47I'm glad to hear you're all okay.
09:53But please hurry.
09:54The situation here is getting worse.
09:56I'm afraid we've got more problems at this end, too.
09:59But we'll move as fast as we can.
10:01Over and out.
10:07You're right, Nandi.
10:08The storm is dying down.
10:09Yes.
10:10I think we should go look for your family, eh?
10:13First we hitch up dogs.
10:14Then we load supplies on sled.
10:16Then we...
10:18What's that noise?
10:19I think it's my family coming to save us both a lot of trouble.
10:23See?
10:25There they are.
10:28Ben, there's Jackie.
10:30Well, I'll be.
10:32And Lassie and Toothless, too.
10:33And they're all safe.
10:42Nandi, we can never thank you enough for saving our lives.
10:46It is enough to see the joy in all your faces.
10:57Well, that storm may be over, but we're still feeling its effects.
11:01What do you mean, Dad?
11:02The footprints we were following are all covered up.
11:05Look.
11:05Of all the rotten luck.
11:07Anybody have any ideas what we do now?
11:09Why don't we split up into two search parties?
11:11One in the air and one on the ground.
11:13Be serious, Mom.
11:14You want us to walk around in all that snow?
11:16Not walk around.
11:18Ride around.
11:19Remember, we've got a snow cat in back.
11:24Relax, Toothless.
11:25This cat is your friend.
11:27And, Laura, I think your plan makes a lot of sense.
11:30So let's get started.
11:31Rescue one, this is snow cat.
11:40We'll head due west, since that's the general direction the footprints were going before they were obliterated by the storm.
11:45Over.
11:46Roger, Ben.
11:47We're going to fly a broader search pattern.
11:50Keep in touch, and good luck.
11:51Hang on, gang.
12:00Here we go.
12:08I don't see a thing so far.
12:10I don't either.
12:12Did you spot something, Lassie?
12:16Dad, she wants us to stop.
12:18But there's nothing out there except snow.
12:20Just the same, if Lassie says stop, then I trust her enough to do so.
12:26Now what?
12:27I'm not sure.
12:28But you can bet Lassie didn't make a stop for nothing.
12:31Yeah.
12:31I think the animals know something we don't.
12:34Just look at Toothless.
12:35He's shaking.
12:37That's not Toothless shaking.
12:39It's the ground.
12:41Jackie, you're right.
12:43Hang on.
12:50What is it, Dad?
12:52An earthquake?
12:53Yes.
12:54And a big one.
12:55It feels like we're right on top of it.
13:01Quick.
13:01Everybody to the rear.
13:03We've got to lighten the front end.
13:06Yes.
13:08Nice driving, Dad.
13:10That was a little too close for comfort.
13:12Rescue one calling Bearclaw.
13:14What is your situation now?
13:18We're trying to save our village by hosing down the structures.
13:21But we're rapidly using up our water supply.
13:25When will you get here with the firefighters?
13:26I'm afraid we haven't found them yet.
13:33But they can't be too far away now.
13:35Miss Turner.
13:36Bearclaw.
13:37We've just spotted something.
13:38I'll check back with you shortly.
13:49Trying to stay alert, kids.
13:51They've got to be out there in this snow somewhere.
13:56Are they okay, Mom?
13:58I don't know, Ben.
13:59They're lying awfully still.
14:01Can we get any lower, Miss Turner?
14:04Hey, those aren't people.
14:06They're just empty clothes.
14:08You're absolutely right.
14:09I don't understand this at all.
14:11Maybe the men we were looking for left those clothes with some sort of signal.
14:15Of course.
14:17The two sets of clothing probably mean that both men are okay.
14:20Yeah.
14:21And the way the clothes are laid out shows us the direction the men were heading.
14:24Now we're getting somewhere.
14:26Well, that's the general area that the snowcat is covering.
14:28Let's go.
14:34Well, it looks like we've reached the end of the road.
14:37What do we do now, Dad?
14:38First of all, we'd better check with your mother.
14:41Snowcat to rescue one.
14:43Have you found anything yet?
14:44Yes, Ben.
14:45We believe the two men are headed in your direction.
14:47We're on our way to meet you now.
14:49Good.
14:49We could use a fresh pair of eyes.
14:58What's all that noise about back here?
15:00I think they see something out there in the water, Dad.
15:02I see it, too.
15:03Look out there.
15:05Hey, it's them.
15:07And it looks like they're trapped on that floating ice.
15:10What do you know?
15:11We finally found them.
15:14Lassie, is that any way to act?
15:16I thought you'd be happy, too.
15:17She's really upset about something.
15:21No wonder.
15:22There's a polar bear out there on the ice.
15:25A polar bear?
15:26Yeah.
15:26And he looks like he means business.
15:28Everybody, hang on.
15:29We have to give those fellows a hand.
15:34Laura, we found them.
15:36But we need your help right away.
15:38Get the hoist ready.
15:39Roger.
15:40I'll take care of it, Ms. Turner.
15:47Where is that helicopter?
15:51We can't do a thing without it.
15:54Lassie!
15:55Lassie, come back!
16:06What's she trying to do?
16:07She's no match for that polar bear.
16:11What's with the dog?
16:13Is she nuts or something?
16:14Laura, this whole operation's in your hands now.
16:22Attention below.
16:23We're going to hoist you off there.
16:25But you must move as quickly as possible.
16:27I'm sure not going to move slowly with that thing breathing down my neck.
16:34Okay.
16:35They're in the litter and I'm bringing them up.
16:44Let's go, Lassie.
16:57Yay, Lassie.
17:10There's your plane, man.
17:11Good.
17:12Now we can unload all our firefighting gear and transfer it to Rescue One here.
17:17Will that take long?
17:18I'd imagine about two hours.
17:20Some of our equipment is pretty heavy.
17:21Ben, we don't have two hours to spare.
17:23Isn't there some other way we can do this?
17:25What other way is there, Laura?
17:27We can't just pick up the whole airplane equipment at all.
17:29Why not, Dad?
17:31Rescue One has more than enough power.
17:33Yeah, Dad.
17:34That's a super idea.
17:35And I thought I was kidding.
17:37Hello, Bearclaw.
17:41This is Rescue One.
17:42Over.
17:42This is Bearclaw.
17:44Thank goodness you're here.
17:45But where are the firefighters?
17:47Believe it or not, they flew in in their own airplane.
17:50Uh, with a little help from Rescue One.
17:56Ben, we're going to proceed with step one now.
18:00Extinguishing the fire.
18:01Good luck, men.
18:02How are they going to put out the fire, Dad?
18:04They're going to try to blow it out, Susan.
18:06Blow it out?
18:07You mean like a candle?
18:08Exactly.
18:09Except the only thing strong enough to blow out a fire that size is an explosion.
18:18Okay.
18:18The explosives are in place.
18:20Let's beat it.
18:21Right.
18:26They did it.
18:27They blew out the fire.
18:29So far, so good.
18:30Dad, now comes phase two.
18:32Hang on.
18:36You're doing fine, Rescue One.
18:37Just keep coming.
18:38That's the way.
18:39Everybody keep your fingers crossed.
18:41This is the most dangerous phase of the whole operation.
18:44But why, Dad?
18:45The fire's already out.
18:47Right.
18:48But the gas that was feeding that fire is still rushing out of the well at a tremendous rate.
18:52One spark can set the whole thing aflame again.
18:55And at this range, those fireproof suits won't do any good.
18:59Dad!
18:59Look!
19:08Stop her!
19:10Somebody stop that child!
19:12Oh, my gosh!
19:13Oh, my gosh!
19:13I hope Lassie can get to her in time.
19:27We did it, Frank.
19:39The gas is shut off, and there's no more danger.
19:42We can go back to our homes.
19:45Bear Claw is saved.
19:46Our deepest thanks to all of you.
19:51You've made this a very happy day for us.
19:54She doesn't seem too happy.
19:55What's the matter, honey?
19:59Why all the tears?
20:01She probably wants her toy airplane back.
20:03Say, I'll bet you're right.
20:05Where is her toy?
20:06Don't ask me.
20:07Ask Toothless.
20:08I'll bet you.
20:10Yes!
20:11Yes!
20:11Yes!
20:13Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
20:43Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
