00:00.
00:08Perfect conditions, dry, hot and sunny.
00:12Plenty of dust about as they head into corner one.
00:16Everybody cleanly through at the moment, that's unusual.
00:20And Dave Thorpe has made a very bad start.
00:22He's well down.
00:24And number two, Jeff Lee Skopold, the Honda, is in the lead.
00:27In second place is former world champion, George Jobay, now riding for Yamaha.
00:31And in third place, Jackie Martins, the Belgian off the very wild rider.
00:36Somebody there has come off early on, and everybody's missed him.
00:39But there is Jeff Lee Skopold, number two, number six, George Jobay there in second place.
00:46Jackie Martins, number five, is in third place.
00:48And in fourth place is the American, Billy Lyles, aboard the privately entered Kawasaki.
00:54Well, there's Jeff Lee Skopold, who many people expect to be the world champion in 1990.
01:01There is the Australian, and now in second place, the Belgian, that is Jackie Martins, aboard the Austrian-built KTM.
01:07Kurt Nicholls, way, way down the order.
01:11The British champion not having a happy day, nor is Dave Thorpe.
01:15Put all eyes on this battle for the lead.
01:17Oh, and side by side, challenging for the lead.
01:20Number five, Jackie Martins, known as a very hard rider indeed.
01:24Jeff Lee Skopold, there.
01:25And now they're side by side, once again, over the jump.
01:28And it looks as if it's still Jeff Lee Skopold, but there Jackie Martins trying another line.
01:35Honda versus KTM here.
01:36And it's still number two Australian, Jeff Lee Skopold, who leads.
01:40But Jackie Martins is right behind and trying the inside line here.
01:43And he takes Jeff Lee Skopold, and Lee Skopold goes down in a very big way.
01:47And I believe that Lee Skopold's foot, his ankle is certainly caught in the swing arm of the KTM machine.
01:56The number two Honda is taken away by an official.
01:59But there Jackie Martins lifts the KTM, bikes going all over the place.
02:04And Martins saying, just look at this.
02:08Jeff Lee Skopold in terrible pain here.
02:12Meanwhile, Billy Lyles has gone into the lead.
02:15Number seven on the privately entered Kawasaki.
02:18Dave Thorpe on the works bike, not having a happy time at all.
02:23Let's have a look in replay.
02:25You can see that Jackie Martins totally and utterly at fault.
02:29He came out far too quickly and literally went straight into the side of Jeff Lee Skopold.
02:36And Lee Skopold in a great deal of pain.
02:39And Martins really should be ashamed of himself for that manoeuvre.
02:42Bikes going around just missing the stricken Lee Skopold and Martins.
02:47But Jeff Lee Skopold now has a suspected broken ankle.
02:51And that could well cost him the World Championship.
02:55Meanwhile, Billy Lyles goes on his way with the Kawasaki.
02:58In second place now, the Yamaha of Georges Jobet in third place.
03:03And not that far behind Jobet is Dirk Gherkins.
03:07There is Georges Jobet, number six, the former world champion.
03:11Change from Honda to Yamaha.
03:13He certainly seems to be going exceptionally well.
03:16There's Dirk Gherkins, number nine, in third place.
03:18And Kurt Nickel, number four, in fourth place.
03:21Nickel, of course, won the opening round of the British Motocross Championship Series.
03:25Within sight of the chequered flag and he is bitterly disappointed and is out of the first race with no World Championship points.
03:36So, Billy Lyles wins, Dirk Gherkins second, Georges Jobet third.
03:39Jackie Martins will be in fourth place, having remounted.
03:44And really, Jackie Martins should receive some form of penalty for his expatime for him as we go to race two.
03:51So, worried is Dave Thorpe's team about the fuel economy of his Kawasaki.
03:55They've welded on a tank on top of his actual fuel tank.
03:59Very unprofessional in the circumstances.
04:01Away they go and it's number three.
04:03That's Erika Bulls is in the lead.
04:04Everybody getting through at the moment, or are they? No.
04:08We've got one fallen rider, one of the tail-enders, but no real harm done at the moment.
04:13It's Erika Bulls in the lead.
04:15And number 75, that's Dutchman Johnny Slomp in second place.
04:19And everybody going through.
04:21Again, Dave Thorpe some way down with the Kawasaki.
04:24And number five, Jackie Martins, almost in the middle of the pack.
04:28And there's Kurt Nickel, number four.
04:29He's made an atrocious start with his KTM.
04:33It would seem that you need a privately entered Kawasaki to do well in the World Championship.
04:37Because Joe Martins, number 14 with a green Kawasaki, is in the lead.
04:41Number three, Erika Bulls, not far behind in second place.
04:44Indeed, those two having quite a battle for the lead.
04:47Also well up is the winner of the opening race, Billy Lyles.
04:51At the moment, it's another Kawasaki leading, Joe Martins.
04:53Jeff Lees, of course, is not taking part in this second race.
05:01He's gone to hospital with that suspected broken ankle.
05:05But here's your leader, Joe Martins.
05:07Erika Bulls going much better in race two than he did in race one.
05:11And Kurt Nickel coming up through the field, slowly but surely.
05:15No stopping Joe Martins, it would seem he's pulling well clear of Erika Bulls, who's dropping back all the line.
05:26So still the leader, Joe Martins.
05:29Well championed, Dave Thorpe there.
05:31And you can see quite clearly the extension to the fuel tank that fought only in 12th place.
05:37Each time that bike was flying over one of the jumps here at Valkenswaard.
05:42He was hitting his groin on that extra fuel tank.
05:46Very painful indeed.
05:48Joe Martins goes through, but there's the battle for second place.
05:51Erika Bulls about to be taken by number seven, Billy Lyles.
05:54With Dirk Gergens, number nine, in fourth place.
05:56And number eight, that is Case van der Ven in fifth spot.
05:59With Joe Martins now being caught, it would seem by new second place man, Billy Lyles.
06:06Erika Bulls, third.
06:08Dirk Gergens is in fourth place.
06:11And number eight, Case van der Ven in fifth.
06:13And pulling out of the second race is the world champion, Dave Thorpe.
06:18He's been sick inside his helmet.
06:20He's in a great deal of pain and retires from the race.
06:24But the battle for the lead is really hotting up with Joe Martins.
06:26Still in the lead, but coming towards the end of the race.
06:29Billy Lyles much closer in second place.
06:32Then it's Dirk Gergens in third, Case van der Ven in fourth.
06:36And the top four now very close together indeed.
06:39And Billy Lyles has gone through into the lead.
06:42It's still Joe Martins in second place, but Dirk Gergens in third spot.
06:46Winner here, of course, last year is also closing up.
06:48First and second places, then held by privately entered Kawasaki's.
06:54Kurt, as Billy Lyles increases his lead slightly.
06:59And yes, in second place now is Dirk Gergens.
07:02And in third place, Case van der Ven.
07:05Joe Martins has made a mistake.
07:07He's in fourth place.
07:08Eric Gaborz will be in fifth place.
07:10Jackie Martins in sixth spot.
07:16No denying the leader.
07:18It's number seven again, the American Billy Lyles.
07:22Coming towards the finishing line.
07:27And take maximum world championship points.
07:31And, of course, leads the World Series.
07:33And another Kawasaki has run out of fuel, it would seem.
07:37That is Britain's Mark Banks.
07:40There in sixth place, Jackie Martins with the KTM.
07:44After that controversial incident, of course, with Jeff Least.
07:48We wish him well.
07:49Let's hope he's back for the next round that we'll be covering
07:52the Swiss Motocross Grand Prix.
07:54But there is Billy Lyles and Dirk Gergens is mounting a final attack
07:59as they head towards the chequered flag.
08:00And it's Billy Lyles who leads by half a second,
08:04wins the second race.
08:05Dirk Gergens in second spot.
