03:15Kursi Leeds.
03:17Over the downhill jump, powering up the other side.
03:22As the rest of the pack power through, but not such a good start for Kurt Nickell.
03:29He'll be very disappointed in that, normally a superb starter,
03:33but the Kawasaki man now facing a fight up through the field.
03:38Kurt Nickell.
03:45And it's Kawasaki out front still, Rossi from Jobe and KTM.
03:51Kawasaki Leeds Honda and KTM.
03:56Number eight is Hakan Karlqvist, another former world champion,
04:01former world 250 champion and a 500 title holder too.
04:07Five is Van der Ben, he looks very much as if he's on the charge.
04:10One of the most versatile racers in motocross can turn his hand to riding any capacity bike,
04:19but now seems to have settled in the 500cc category.
04:23Almost a clash there from number 26.
04:27That's Jackie Martins.
04:29Now Jobe pressing hard, but right on their tail.
04:37Rossi leading, Jobe second, but right behind them.
04:41It's Case van der Ben.
04:42Thorpe now up into fifth place.
04:4851 Romano Nanini on his Italian KTM.
04:52It's going well at the front of the field too.
04:54But a terrific battle developing for the lead between Franco Rossi and George Jobe.
05:00Five is the KTM of Case van der Ben.
05:05A talented Dutchman.
05:0783, that's Rob Andrews.
05:09Still fighting hard.
05:12Two is the former world 250 champion, Jackie Vimont.
05:16But still the world 500 champion can't do anything to get back on terms with the leader, Franco Rossi.
05:29Battles continuing all the way down the field.
05:34Vimont looking good in his comeback.
05:36But he won't be trying any heroics.
05:38He just wants a good shakedown to make sure that he's still in the top flight of world motocrossers.
05:45And still the battle continues at the front.
05:48Rossi leads Jobe.
05:51Jobe has brought a lot of Belgian supporters with him.
05:55So he's getting cheered on every inch of the way.
05:58But it's still Rossi out front.
06:02Jobe second, van der Ben.
06:04But Jobe's now in the lead.
06:07George Jobe has taken over at the front of the field.
06:10The lead from Rossi and van der Ben.
06:14Very often the criticism is levelled at the Italian riders that they haven't the stamina to keep up their early pace.
06:25That's Heinz-Kinnigadner.
06:28Former world 250 champion.
06:30Twice in fact.
06:32The title holder in the quarter litre class.
06:35But the 1, 2, 3 is still the same.
06:38Jobe, Rossi and van der Ben.
06:4151 is Romano Nanini.
06:44In fourth place.
06:45And fifth is Dave Thorpe.
06:47Kurt Nicol facing a tough task after that poor start.
06:54George Jobe, the world 500cc champion, showing just how he grabbed that title.
07:01Leading the final race of the year.
07:04Dave Thorpe, the man whose title he took over,
07:08in fifth position.
07:09Thorpe would dearly love to string together a couple of good results here in Switzerland.
07:19And he'd dearly love to beat his arch rival, George Jobe.
07:22But at the moment he's got some way to go, although Dave Thorpe is poised.
07:29He looks very much in control in that battle with Romano Nanini, the Italian KTM rider.
07:37That's the leader, George Jobe.
07:41On the Honda.
07:43And now quite a gap.
07:45And van der Ben in second place.
07:47Van der Ben has relegated Rossi and Thorpe is up to fourth.
07:50So, a new order on the leaderboard.
07:54It's Jobe, van der Ben, Rossi, Dave Thorpe and Nanini.
07:58And Thorpe looks as if he's got Rossi in his sights now.
08:02He's relegated one Italian.
08:04And he looks poised to do the same to the other one.
08:08Jobe, van der Ben, Rossi, Thorpe.
08:13And he's got the Kawasaki of Rossi very much in his sights.
08:17And now van der Ben is in the lead.
08:21Case van der Ben has taken the lead.
08:22What has happened to George Jobe?
08:25A new leader then for the first race of the Camel Swiss 500cc Grand Prix.
08:30And it's case van der Ben out front on the KTM.
08:34The KTM made just across the border in Austria leads this race.
08:39So, the order, van der Ben, Rossi and Thorpe now in third place.
08:45And there is George Jobe.
08:48As obviously some problem dropped him well down the field.
08:54Jobe just ahead of Romano Nanini.
08:56But a new leader, Case van der Ben.
09:01And Jobe has stopped.
09:02George Jobe, obviously with a sick semi-worked Honda.
09:09Calling for assistance.
09:11But problems there for the world champion.
09:16Rob Andrews, number 83.
09:18Battling it out with number 7, Kurt Nicoll.
09:21But anyway, the race is over for the world champion.
09:26Meanwhile, van der Ben out front.
09:28And Thorpe has closed right up to the race leader.
09:32We've got a fight on our hands between Case van der Ben and David Thorpe.
09:39The works KTM rider versus the number 1 factory Honda rider.
09:45But van der Ben holding him off at the moment.
09:48Has he got just that little bit in reserve?
09:53And that's the fight for the lead.
09:56Number 40, Mervyn Anstey down in fifth place.
09:58But he's got bits hanging off his bike.
10:01But an excellent ride for him.
10:0328 is Andy Nicholl.
10:05So, good ride for him too.
10:06And 26, Jackie Martins.
10:09But the panel for the lead between Case van der Ben,
10:12the Dutchman and Britain's Dave Thorpe.
10:14Franco Rossi doing well to hold on to that third spot.
10:22Remember the early leader.
10:25But that's the gap at the front.
10:28Dave Thorpe chasing Case van der Ben.
10:34Rossi, I suspect, will be happy to settle for third place.
10:37But he's coming under pressure from Romano Nanini.
10:40Case van der Ben and Dave Thorpe.
10:43Rossi leaping into sight.
10:45Followed by Nanini.
10:48That's the order at the front of the field.
10:53Van der Ben now looks as if he's pulling away just a touch from Dave Thorpe.
10:57Maybe Thorpe has thought the better of it.
10:59Decided he'll settle for second place.
11:04Van der Ben leads.
11:05Nanini.
11:11In fourth spot.
11:15On the KTM, just behind his fellow countryman, Franco Rossi.
11:20This, the battle for seventh place.
11:22Jackie Martins, number 26 on the KTM, just behind Britain's Andy Nicholls.
11:28Andy Nicholls, a very talented young rider indeed,
11:31but perhaps lacks the consistency to make the break into the real big time of top class motocross.
11:40And the chequered flag for Case van der Ben, who wins the first leg of the KTM 500cc Swiss Grand Prix.
11:50In second place, it's Dave Thorpe.
11:53Third, it's Franco Rossi, the early leader.
11:55And in fourth place, Romano Nanini.
11:57Two Italians then, in the first four.
12:00The riders for the second race of the KTM 500cc Swiss Grand Prix.
12:08Rossi fastest in practice.
12:11Behind him was Jackie Vimor.
12:16Third fastest in practice was number six, Leif Pearson.
12:23The Yamaha works rider, and behind him, Britain's Kurt Nicholl.
12:30So, the second race, about to start.
12:35Intense concentration as the gate drops to get the second 40 minute plus two laps.
12:41Leg underway.
12:44And there's a pile-up in the first corner, and Dave Thorpe's involved in that.
12:47Dave Thorpe, one of the men involved in that melee on the first corner.
12:56Five riders involved there, and in the lead, straight away, number 84, is Maurizio Dolce.
13:04Another Italian then, leading this race.
13:07But Dave Thorpe faced with a very difficult task indeed,
13:11if he used to make something of a comeback from that first corner disaster.
13:17Thorpe involved in that five-man pilot, and so is George Jobe, a terrible start for him.
13:24But, out in front, Maurizio Dolce.
13:28Andy Nicholls, number 28, is second and 33, Kurt Lundqvist.
13:31Followed by Mark Banks, the young British rider.
13:35So, a good start for some of the British riders, but not a good start for,
13:41perhaps the most famous of the British riders, Dave Thorpe.
13:44Still no Thorpe. There he is.
13:48Thorpe leading George Jobe, but a disastrous beginning to this second race of the Swiss Grand Prix.
13:56Now, Nicholls is in the lead. Andy Nicholls leads the Swiss Grand Prix.
14:00The British Kawasaki rider is out in front, ahead of Maurizio Dolce,
14:04Kurt Lundqvist, and Mark Banks.
14:07Jackie Vimor's up there at the front of the field, too.
14:09But, Dave Thorpe, now, this will really show if he's back to full fitness.
14:16If he can race through the field, then we'll know that Thorpe is back with a vengeance.
14:21Meanwhile, out front, Andy Nicholls, Maurizio Dolce, Kurt Lundqvist, Jackie Vimor.
14:26And behind Vimor, it's Mark Banks.
14:3240 is Mervyn Anstey, who did so well in that first race.
14:39Fifth place from Anstey.
14:41But Thorpe certainly has his work cut out.
14:51More eyes looking back through the field to see where Dave Thorpe is.
14:56And down in a lowly 25th position, Dave Thorpe.
15:0133, Kurt Lundqvist, followed by his teammate Leap Persson, number six.
15:09And the rest of the field powering through this ultra-fast track.
15:1340 is Mervyn Anstey.
15:16The dust beginning to be kicked up.
15:19That's the leader.
15:21Andy Nicholls.
15:23Dolce in second place.
15:24Vimor is third.
15:25So that's the order at the front of the field.
15:33The pack dropping down.
15:36That awesome plummet.
15:40Nicholls.
15:41And that's the gap between the first and second men.
15:43Dolce.
15:44Vimor.
15:49Now the question is, can Nicholls stand the pressure
15:53of leading so early on in the race?
15:56Now that's the first race leader, Case van der Ven.
16:03Van der Ven.
16:05Well placed.
16:08Giving chase to the leading trio.
16:11Case van der Ven.
16:12Followed by Persson.
16:1626, Jackie Martins.
16:1851, Romano Nalini.
16:19But this is the race leader, Andy Nicholls.
16:24Second place, Maurizio Dolce.
16:26In third, it's Jackie Vimor.
16:29Fourth is Case van der Ven on the KTM.
16:34And that's Dave Thorpe already climbing up the leaderboard.
16:40Dave Thorpe disastrously involved in that first corner filer.
16:44But the never-say-die spirit of the double world champion
16:49is not letting him rest on his laurels.
16:54Vimor now up into second place.
16:56But we've already lost the world champion.
17:01George Jobay has quit the race after only one lap.
17:06So with one lap completed, Jobay quit the fray.
17:12Not like this man.
17:14Gingerly going around that hairpin pen.
17:16Andy Nicholls in the lead of the race.
17:23That's Case van der Ven in fourth place.
17:26And van der Ven obviously very much at home
17:31on this Roggenberg circuit.
17:35Van der Ven normally known as a sand specialist.
17:39But he's shown today
17:40that he can race with the best of them on the fast tracks.
17:46Dave Thorpe.
17:47Still making places, making up ground
17:50as the race wears on.
17:52A magnificent, huge leap from Andy Nicholls
17:58in second place, Jackie Beemore.
18:01World 250 champion in 1986
18:04and tragically injured.
18:07The end of the season hasn't taken any part
18:09in the World 500cc championship this year
18:12until this race.
18:16Nicholls leads.
18:17That's the battle for third place.
18:23Case van der Ven slowly but surely closing
18:26on Maurizio Dolce.
18:34Andy Nicholls.
18:36His best result before this.
18:38A fourth place at the British Grand Prix.
18:41But Dolce in trouble
18:42and van der Ven there
18:43to take advantage immediately.
18:45Maurizio Dolce slowed
18:49and Case van der Ven took over third spot.
18:53Now that could well be
18:55where the danger comes from
18:57as far as Andy Nicholls
18:59and Jackie Beemore are concerned.
19:02He's the man to watch.
19:03The first race winner,
19:04Case van der Ven.
19:09Thorpe.
19:10Powering up the field.
19:12Dave Thorpe already in the points.
19:16But it's a question of how many.
19:21And 51.
19:22That is Romano Nanini.
19:25Romano Nanini
19:26who had such a good ride
19:27in the first race
19:28has crashed
19:31and it looks like
19:31he won't be taking much more part
19:33in the proceedings.
19:36Still out in the lead.
19:39It's Andy Nicholls.
19:40But that looks like
19:43the end of the line
19:44for Romano Nanini
19:45as far as this race goes.
19:48Receiving treatment
19:49at the trackside
19:50as number two
19:51world 250 champion last year
19:54Jackie Beemore goes through
19:55followed by Case van der Ven.
19:58Those are the three men
19:59at the front of the field.
20:01And that's the man
20:02at the very head
20:03of the pack.
20:04The leader
20:05Andy Nicholls.
20:13Nicholls rode for Yamaha
20:15last year.
20:15This year
20:16on a Kawasaki.
20:20Comfortably out front
20:21Andy Nicholls.
20:23And there's a fight
20:24on for second place.
20:26That's Case van der Ven
20:27number five
20:28and he's right on
20:29Jackie Beemore's tail.
20:32The KTM man
20:34is hounding
20:35the Yamaha rider
20:36every inch of the way
20:38in their fight
20:38for second spot.
20:40But there's nobody
20:42to give any trouble
20:44to Andy Nicholls.
20:46Now can Nicholls
20:47stand the pressure?
20:49It's always tough
20:51to go out
20:52and lead a race
20:54from start to finish
20:55but that's more or less
20:56what Andy Nicholls
20:57is being asked to do.
20:59And Thorpe now
21:00is right up
21:01on Mervyn Anstey's tail.
21:03The two Brits
21:04will be circulating together
21:07Thorpe up
21:08into seventh place.
21:09showing all the old
21:13verve and panache
21:14that took him
21:15to world championship glory
21:17in 1985
21:18and 1986.
21:21Dave Thorpe up
21:22into seventh place
21:23and that's
21:24a terrific ride
21:25from him
21:26considering that
21:27first corner incident.
21:3183
21:31that is
21:33Rob Andrews
21:34obviously
21:35in a bit of trouble
21:38but this is the battle
21:39for second place.
21:42Jackie Vimo
21:43at the moment
21:44managing to hold off.
21:47The KTM

21:5268
21:52the Belgian
21:53Dirk Gherkins.
21:54He's had
21:55a very good year
21:56indeed
21:56this year.
21:58Dirk Gherkins
21:59has been
22:00less than consistent
22:01but he's put in
22:02some very good rides
22:03and impressed
22:04many many people
22:05indeed.
22:09Thorpe chasing
22:14Anstey
22:15and that's
22:17Case van der Ven
22:17up now
22:18into second place.
