00:00.
00:30Here we go and win the first race of the 1986 Grand Prix season.
00:34The flagman's so excited he's dropped the flag...
00:36...as Hakan Karqvist goes through to take second place and 17 points.
00:40In third spot, André Maullchwb...
00:47And there's the local hero Heinz König Dσ,
00:50taking eighth place,
00:51to the biggest cheer of the day so far.
00:54There's plenty for the massive crowd to talk about between the races.
01:0225,000 people have come here to Sittendorf
01:05to see Dave Thorpe raise aloft the trophy for winning the first race.
01:15So, just checking everything's in order,
01:18watching the starter, watching the gate
01:20to see if they can get that millisecond advantage
01:23but it means they're away.
01:25Someone hits the gate again, but next time they're away cleanly
01:27and Thorpe didn't get a particularly good start
01:30as they go along the start straight.
01:32And once more, it's the Italian, Michele Magarotto, in the lead.
01:35Gabor's second, Malherb third, followed by Swede Leafpust.
01:40The rest of the pack streamed through safely.
01:48Oh, but there's always one, isn't there?
01:50What's the betting he's an Italian?
01:53Ah, yes. Funny that, isn't it?
01:56That's Luigi Cesari picking up his bike to get back into the fray,
02:01who says the Italians always surrender.
02:05Now, there's an Italian that's showing the rest of the way.
02:07Michele Magarotto out in front
02:08as Leaf Pearson challenges for second place
02:11but is held off by Gabor's.
02:13Number five there, that's the English rider Kurt Nicol
02:15forced out of the first race with ignition trouble.
02:18and Dave Thorpe, not a very good start for him.
02:24He's back in tenth position.
02:30The leader then, Michele Magarotto,
02:32out in front on the Kawasaki.
02:34Eric Gabor's in second place.
02:36Andre Malherb third, and Lee Pearson fourth,
02:38ahead of Kurt Nicol and Dave Thorpe.
02:41Thorpe's made up a staggering four places
02:43in the space of a single lap.
02:45A remarkable achievement.
02:46But out in front, it's still Magarotto holding on,
02:52but he's coming under increasing pressure
02:54from second man Eric Gabor's.
02:56And now Thorpe is up into third place
02:59ahead of Malherb.
03:01Thorpe's third, making the kind of progress
03:03that he needs to keep on terms in this race.
03:13Magarotto leads Gabor's.
03:15Works Kawasaki leads Works Honda.
03:20In third place, Dave Thorpe.
03:21Fourth, Andre Malherb.
03:24And that's Case van der Ven.
03:26He's down in tenth position.
03:32Magarotto leading for the second time.
03:37Gabor's in second, and Thorpe's in trouble.
03:39Dave Thorpe, the steam coming out of the radiator.
03:42He seems to have knocked off the radiator cap.
03:45He said that this could be a problem.
03:47Trying to restart in order that he can get back to the pits.
03:52Thorpe's long legs mean that sometimes his knee
03:55comes into contact with that badly designed radiator cap.
03:59He told Honda at the beginning of the season
04:01that they ought to alter it,
04:03but before this race, they hadn't been able to do so.
04:07Michele Magarotto continues on his way,
04:11followed by Eric Gabor's and Andre Malherb in third place.
04:15The two Belgians, he is battling it out to the second.
04:20And Malherb makes a move as they go up the hill,
04:22and as they crest it, he shuts the door on his teammate.
04:25Andre Malherb then up into second position.
04:28But out in front, it's still Michele Magarotto.
04:35If only he could keep up this sort of palace for 45 minutes,
04:40then he'd be a real world championship contender.
04:42Unfortunately, he's got neither the stamina
04:44nor the staying power to keep that up.
04:47Now Malherb's making his move.
04:56Magarotto shrumps off the challenge.
05:00That's Rob Andrews there
05:02with the broken front plate on his Kawasaki.
05:05That's caused by one of those flying stones,
05:07so just imagine what it could do
05:09if you didn't have the proper protection
05:10on your face and head.
05:13Magarotto leads Malherb still.
05:17Malherb, a wily campaigner.
05:21He'll know exactly when to make his move,
05:23where Magarotto is fastest and slowest on the track,
05:27where he's got the right line,
05:29and it looks like he's made his move.
05:31Yes, Malherb is out in front.
05:33Andre Malherb leads Michele Magarotto in second place.
05:37That's Lawrence Spence, the Ulsterman.
05:40He's down in 11th.
05:41Now watch carefully in the background.
05:44On the crest of the hill,
05:45and there Michele Magarotto throws away his second place
05:49at exactly the halfway stage of the race
05:51as Leif Pearson presses on in second position.
05:59Malherb leads.
06:01Leif Pearson second and Jobe third.
06:04Belgian, Swede and Belgian.
06:06Eric Gabor's being forced wide there
06:12by number five, Kurt Nichol.
06:19Eric Gabor's just about to demolish our cameraman
06:21when Dermot O'Boyle finally sees sense
06:24and runs out of the way.
06:26And Graham Noyce, disaster now for him
06:28as he grinds to a halt at the side of the track.
06:31He can't surely have run out of petrol.
06:33Eric Gabor's goes by to lap the unfortunate Noyce.
06:40And Noyce has no alternative but to quit the race.
06:45His problem was later diagnosed as ignition trouble.
06:51Out in front, Andre Malherb leads,
06:53Swede Leif Pearson.
06:56Rob Andrews still battling strongly
06:58ahead of Kurt Nichol on the Kawasaki.
07:00But Malherb's well out in front
07:05and well in control of this race.
07:09Number four, Georges Jobe
07:10in third spot behind Leif Pearson.
07:1443 is Rob Andrews on the Kawasaki.
07:165, Kurt Nichol.
07:1817, Werner Siegeler.
07:19And Case van der Ven, number 61,
07:21Laurence Spence is 49.
07:22And nine is the local man,
07:25as you can hear from the crowd's cheers,
07:28Heinz Kinnigadner.
07:32Andre Malherb, number two,
07:35leading the race from Leif Pearson, number 10.
07:39And there's as Kurt Nichol crashing out of the race,
07:42he's trying to take Rob Andrews, number 43,
07:46for fourth place.
07:47But extremely bad luck there for Kurt Nichol,
07:50just trying a little bit too hard.
07:53No permanent damage done, though.
07:55He's not out of the race,
07:57just out of the hunt for fourth place.
08:01He won't be giving up there,
08:02but he has lost half a dozen positions.
08:06There it is in slow motion again,
08:08and Kurt Nichol very lucky
08:09not to be clouded extremely hard around the head
08:12by the back wheel of that motorcycle.
08:13Half a lap to go for the leader.
08:20Person still holding second spot.
08:25And he'll be quite happy with that.
08:27Never won a Grand Prix yet.
08:30But if he manages to hang on to that second place,
08:33he could be second equal
08:34in the World Championship table.
08:37Kurt Nichol just glancing behind him
08:39to see how close the opposition is.
08:41And there's that opposition,
08:42Heinz-Kinnigadner.
08:45Still commanding the loyalty of that local crowd,
08:48and Eric Gabor's very nearly having a last lap calamity there.
08:53For Andre Malherd now,
08:55round the last couple of loops,
08:57under the bridge,
08:59to take the chequered flag
09:00and the second race of the Austrian Grand Prix,
09:05the second leg
09:05in the World Championship chase.
09:09Leif Persson second,
09:11George Jobay third.
09:13As they look forward to the second round
09:15of the World Championship,
09:16in seven days' time,
09:18there won't be many happy memories
09:19of the Austrian Grand Prix
09:20for Dave Thorpe.
09:22But for Andre Malherd,
09:23it's a champagne celebration
09:25at Sittendorf.
09:25Sittendorf.
09:26Sittendorf.
09:26Sittendorf.
