00:00Hallo an der Tuning Blog-Channel.
00:05Today I'm sharing a little tutorial on how to change the brake pads on the rear axle of a car.
00:13They're a bit behind the wheel.
00:16Yes, this isn't the ultimate guide that you should or can't follow strictly.
00:22Especially when it comes to brakes.
00:25I've done this on many cars now, always my private vehicles, and I think I'm pretty good at it.
00:30But if you don't feel confident enough to do it, then don't do it, go to the garage.
00:35I won't take any responsibility for anyone if they repair their brakes after watching the video and end up hanging from a tree.
00:42So it's best to just leave it alone if that's not really your thing.
00:46Just a heads up.
00:48Yes, exactly.
00:50So, the first thing we'll do is take the wheel off.
00:52It's straight and it's always a good idea to take a look at the brake disc and measure it.
01:04If these are the first few pads, then you can usually take the brake disc again.
01:08But of course it also depends on the car and the evidence.
01:11Uh, definitely measure the brake disc to see if it's still okay.
01:14If it can handle more pads, that's how it is here.
01:17It still has 1mm until it reaches the minimum dimension.
01:21Uh, you can already see a bit of an edge here, but it's not that dramatic yet.
01:25Uh, by the way, how you can measure it, uh, because of the edge, I also have a video about it online.
01:30I'll link it for you right away.
01:33And yes, so if you're sure, then you can actually get started here.
01:36On the vehicle, there are screws for the brake pads here.
01:41One here at the top and one.
01:43I hope I can get this straight.
01:44Well, here at the bottom, right?
01:47That's all you need to do.
01:50There's also a larger one behind it.
01:52I don't think you can see it now, if you want to loosen the disc.
01:56That's not mentioned here, so only the two screws are relevant.
02:00And I'm only showing you the passenger side, because on the passenger side, as you can see here,
02:04there's this wear indicator, which isn't on the other side.
02:08Um, so that's the more difficult side, if you can call it that.
02:12You then have a little plastic box here, this is where the wear indicator goes in,
02:16and you first have to completely remove the wear indicator from the, how should I say, groove.
02:22It's in these rubber sleeves here, so that you can finally remove the saddle.
02:27And then it's inserted from here like this from above.
02:31Exactly.
02:32Please note.
02:34If I remember correctly, there's a 13mm socket with which you can loosen these two screws.
02:44And I think it would have to be a 17mm for the disc, but as I said, that's not mentioned here in this case.
02:50The next thing you need to do is set the assembly mode, because it won't work without it.
02:56Also, that means you should secure the vehicle.
02:58That goes without saying, because when you activate the assembly mode, the handbrake is of course released and, yes, to get into the diagnostic mode, right?
03:16With BMW, it's like, what was it again?
03:23Press the start button three times in a row, then you go into diagnostic mode.
03:27Your midapter has to be plugged in, of course, and then I'll take the BeamerLink app, in this case, you set it to flight mode, as you can see up here.
03:34But then turn on the Wi-Fi and connect to it.
03:41It's now connected, as you can see up here.
03:43And then you go to the parking brake section here, and then you can activate the assembly mode.
03:51Remember, the parking brake must already be released, otherwise it won't activate.
03:56So, it's now released, the vehicle is secured.
03:59I still have the wheel chock on the other side and now it's pressing down here.
04:09Exactly.
04:09And now it releases, or rather moves the piston back as much as possible.
04:16Exactly.
04:18That's it for that step.
04:20So, then we have one more step.
04:23Open the cap for the brake fluid, right?
04:28Here's the cover, open the cap, because you're pushing the piston, you're pushing the cylinder in and that's pushing the brake fluid back.
04:34And yes, you should do that so that it can spread properly.
04:41Then also check when the pistons are pushed back that nothing leaks over here.
04:45Of course, not too much brake fluid should be pushed back.
04:49So, next you loosen the screw here.
04:52You need the 17mm here to hold it in place and then use the socket, the ratchet, to open the two screws.
04:58So, one here at the top and then this one here at the bottom.
05:04So, those are the two screws.
05:06By the way, I have a ratchet wrench here, it's easier to get to it.
05:09You can also do that with the socket, but it's better with the ratchet wrench.
05:17And then the saddle is actually already loose and can theoretically be pulled down,
05:20but as I said, you first have to unclip this brake wear indicator here.
05:31So, it's loose here now.
05:34Um, if you take it out, it's best to push it back a little bit.
05:38So into the town hall, I would say.
05:40Then you loosen the oh no, the next thing you do is take out the old pads and the saddle.
05:48You hang it with a cable or something else,
05:50it's best to hang it around a joint or with a large cable tie so that it doesn't get caught on the brake line.
06:00So, here are three of these rubber sleeves or whatever.
06:04The wear indicator is hanging in there.
06:06You open the cover here, it opens on the left side.
06:10Uh, take this out here and then you loosen the intermediate piece here, right?
06:21Like this.
06:22And then it's just hanging loose here.
06:25Now pull the other one through again.
06:28And here you can pull it through the saddle.
06:34And now you have that out and are still hanging the saddle up.
06:37So, I used a wire to tie it up.
06:41You'll have to take a look, maybe a cable tie too.
06:45And depending on whether the disc is to be replaced now or not,
06:48you can be more or less behind when removing the brake pads.
06:52I'm going to do it here with the screwdriver in the gap.
06:56It's actually easy.
06:57You can only see it here very simply.
07:05So don't hammer it like a world champion, just push it out and that's it.
07:13And do the same thing here on the inside, including the wear indicator.
07:17So, the wear indicator, let's see if you can see it here.
07:24Uh, you can't take that off anymore, right?
07:26Unless you remove the brake pads before they probably give the warning in the instrument cluster.
07:31Then this contact shouldn't be damaged yet.
07:33But yes, one of these things costs 8 euros.
07:35So I'll definitely buy new ones.
07:39So, these are the new ones.
07:41Um, there are some with a groove for the wear indicator and then on the other side.
07:45So these are for the inside and then on the other side, the ones for the outside.
07:50And that probably depends on the manufacturer, but with these it's like that twice.
07:55It doesn't have a wear indicator on the other side, but yes, that's how it is.
07:59So on the other side, logically, it's also for the inside.
08:04So, then you take this, insert your sensor here.
08:11It needs a little bit of force, but not much.
08:16Insert it here and that's it.
08:21So, then it's a matter of pushing the piston back.
08:26Um, normally it's so easy that you can do it by hand.
08:30Alternatively, you can put a small piece of wood in between and do it with a pipe wrench.
08:35Or you can use a universal reset tool here.
08:38Um, yes, as you like.
08:41Um, unfortunately I have to put the phone aside now.
08:43I can't really show you that.
08:45Okay, I can show you.
08:47So, this is what the reset lever looks like.
08:49You turn it here.
08:50As I said, I'm alone here, so there's no other way.
08:55This is how it looks.
08:56It would have worked with your fingers too.
08:58That's how it should be.
08:59Of course, the piston has to be extremely easy to move.
09:02You don't have to turn it either.
09:04The piston isn't turned, it's just pushed back.
09:06Once he's done that, he goes to a container for the brake fluid.
09:12So, just make sure nothing overflows here.
09:16Yes, that shouldn't happen under normal circumstances.
09:19I'll put the lid on, it's drizzling a bit outside.
09:22Disastrous weather again.
09:24Uh, yes, exactly.
09:25So, next he'll pry out these clamps here, because they're always new ones supplied, and the screws
09:31are also new ones supplied.
09:33So don't use those anymore, but use the ones supplied again and install these new clamps.
09:37For the clamps and also for the new pads, use a little bit of appropriate grease at this point,
09:44but of course only for that or I don't know what it's called.
09:49Uh, yes, otherwise clean it completely.
09:52So, I've done it several times now without the, what's it called?
09:56Assembly grease, I don't know, several times without.
09:59Yeah, the car mechanic will probably give me the finger now, but I don't think that's
10:03where it fails.
10:04Yeah, just a tip for you.
10:06So, the spring is already in here at the bottom, you just put it in like this.
10:11They go out like this, right?
10:15It's a bit difficult when I'm supposed to film it, but yes, that's how they come out and
10:19that's how the others are then simply clicked in.
10:23So, once the clamps are in, first feed this cable through here.
10:27Don't forget, because then it won't work anymore later, right?
10:32This brake wear indicator and then you put it in like this, right?
10:37There's no other way.
10:39Not like this, not so that it touches the brake disc.
10:41I've seen that before.
10:44So, these are the new ones here, right?
10:47They actually fit in correctly with this nose.
10:50Like this.
10:52And that's all extremely easy.
10:54So, no matter what you do with the brake here, nothing should be difficult, cumbersome or
10:59whatever.
11:00Um, then something's wrong, something's stuck or whatever.
11:05So, you can see here now, they fit exactly under the edge of the brake disc and yes, that's
11:09basically it for now.
11:10The cable is pulled through here and now in reverse order, the caliper is put back on.
11:16Put the screws in and then we have one side.
11:20So, just push the caliper back on.
11:22As I said, it's really easy, no tools, everything by hand.
11:26Uh, the only important thing is that the piston is pushed back far enough, as far as it will
11:30go.
11:30And then you can easily put it on here.
11:32The cable is now sticking out here at the top.
11:35We'll then guide it back here accordingly.
11:36And now we'll start with the two new screws and tighten them with 35 new torque.
11:43So, here again, something doesn't fit, of course, you only notice when you're doing
11:47it.
11:49Namely, these three nubs here from the brake wear indicator.
11:53First of all, there are only two here.
11:56Uh, this isn't the end of the world, because it fits quite well up here.
12:00I've put it together.
12:01Fold it back together here and you're done.
12:02It's hanging in there too, but not here at the back.
12:07Uh, the only way I can help myself is to put this down here in the original guide and
12:11secure it with a cable tie.
12:14I'd say it's not rocket science, but of course it's not pretty.
12:18And you can't adjust the parts either.
12:20So this one fits, this one down here, everything is tight, but here we have a slightly too big
12:25bend in it.
12:26That shouldn't be a problem, but that's just how it is.
12:29Okay, I'm going to put a cable tie around this one here and then it'll hold.
12:32But yeah, I don't know.
12:35It was ordered based on a model number and it still doesn't fit in the end.
12:39Okay, nevertheless, it's finished now.
12:41Here's the cable tie, it'll hold, nothing will happen.
12:45And the arch here isn't the end of the world, nothing will happen either.
12:49Otherwise, everything worked.
12:53Okay, that's basically it.
12:55Now the wheel goes back on and then of course everything on the other side again without
12:59this sensor.
13:02But nothing more.
13:07Okay, don't forget to tighten everything with the torque wrench and yes,
13:11then you can actually lower the car and go to the other side.
13:13Okay, the second side is done too.
13:19Everything's great.
13:22Let's go in now and have some fun with the assembly mode again.
13:27You can't forget that at the end.
13:29Okay, three more times.
13:31The music always goes off first.
13:36The diagnostic mode always goes on here.
13:43Uh, then you grab your WLAN, this adapter again.
13:49As I said, it works a little differently for everyone.
13:52The principle is always the same.
13:53Did I do something wrong?
13:55No, it connected.
13:56Exactly.
13:58So, let's go to this.
13:59Where do we have it?
14:01Here.
14:03Don't connect the Bemerink app.
14:11First, turn it around properly onto the parking brake and deactivate the installation mode.
14:16That's normal.
14:28You probably didn't hear, but the brake has now more or less applied itself.
14:35And now we can remove the message here.
14:39Let's turn it on again.
14:40Exactly, it works completely normally.
14:49I'm going to drive off now.
14:53Exactly.
14:54At the beginning, the brake pad is a little harder for a moment.
14:57That's normal, but it goes away with the first pedal stroke.
15:00Yes, and now everything is basically back to normal.
15:06And next, let's reset the brake pads, because you'll probably have to do that too.
15:10The message, the brake wear indicator.
15:17Oh, I have to think about that first.
15:19No, I think you can reset that here.
15:21Exactly.
15:22And you can do that via the menu.
15:24Also, I can use the Bemerink app.
15:26I don't want to advertise too much, but it's really handy, especially when it comes to BMW.
15:30And then he goes to service reset here, right?
15:34Then you can see what's due, when, and at the very top is the brake.
15:38It would have been due in 700 kilometers.
15:40Then he goes to reset.
15:43Here goes to service reset.
15:47Oh, wait a minute.
15:48Sorry, I'm a hero too.
15:50The engine is running.
15:52So, the engine is off now, reconnected.
15:55So, now let's go back in here.
15:57Reset.
15:58The following conditions must be met.
16:01Brake pad where sensors are newer.
16:03We did that.
16:04Secure the vehicle against rolling away.
16:06Ah, yes.
16:07Release the parking brake.
16:08Okay.
16:09It says P.
16:09I don't know.
16:10Let's do it.
16:11Let the car slow down a bit.
16:12Don't apply the foot brake.
16:14I won't do that.
16:16And now it should probably work.
16:18Very cool.
16:24And there's already a new interval for the rear brake.
16:29Okay, service counter means the rear axle has already been done three times, if I interpret
16:35that correctly, and the front axle probably only once.
16:38Yes, it's actually quite practical.
16:40You can also see more engine oil and so on and so forth and can then reset it accordingly.
16:45I like it very much.
16:47And if you enjoyed it, please leave a subscription.
16:50Um, I would like to make a few more videos, but that will only work if the channel continues
16:54to grow.
16:56And then I'll say until the next video and thanks for watching.
16:58Bye.
16:59Bye.
17:02For more videos, just subscribe.
