00:00Formula One driver Liam Lawson narrowly avoids running over track workers during Mexico City Grand Prix.
00:06Sunday's Formula One Mexico City Grand Prix nearly took a horrifying turn when Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson had to take evasive action to keep from hitting two workers who would run onto the track.
00:18As Lawson exited the pit after replacing his front wing, he encountered marshals racing to clear debris on lap three.
00:24Maneuvering through the initial turns, Lawson was forced to break and swerve to avoid the workers returning to their stations.
00:31He then came over the radio to his team to express his concern and frustration with what had just unfolded.
00:37Mate, what the F? he yelled to his race engineer.
00:40Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have killed them.
00:44After the race, Lawson expressed not only his anger over the situation, but also his amazement.
00:50I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing, he said.
00:53Came out on a new set of hards and then I got to turn one and there were just two dudes running across the track.
00:59I nearly hit one of them. Honestly, it was so dangerous.
01:02Obviously, there's been a miscommunication somewhere.
01:05But I've never experienced that before and I haven't really seen that in the past.
01:08It's pretty unacceptable.
01:10We can't understand how, on a live track, marshals can be allowed to just run across the track like that.
01:16I have no idea why. I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again.
01:22A video shot from the stands and posted on TikTok showed just how close Lawson and the track workers came to disaster.
01:28In 1977, at the South African Grand Prix, driver Tom Price struck a 19-year-old race marshal
01:34at 170 miles per hour after he had crossed the track without permission to deal with a broken-down car.
01:40The marshal was killed instantly, as was Price, who was struck in the head by a fire extinguisher being carried by the worker.
01:48Since then, Formula One has grown leaps and bounds when it comes to safety.
01:53But Sunday's incident is a reminder that there is still work yet to be done.
