00:00Welcome to the new video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:04Today, we're talking about a controversial topic that not only affects the automotive industry,
00:09but also millions of consumers in Europe.
00:13The EU Commission is planning to ban combustion engines for rental car companies and company fleets from 2030.
00:20According to a report in Bildam Sontag, the new regulation is set to be introduced into Parliament in late summer.
00:25If this plan is implemented, it could have far-reaching consequences.
00:33According to the newspaper, around 60% of new car sales will be affected.
00:37This is the share of the vehicle market that rental car companies and major customers account for.
00:43The remaining 40% is accounted for by private buyers.
00:47The companies affected themselves are particularly critical of the proposal.
00:50Nico Gabriel, CEO of the rental car company SIX, expressed clear criticism and described the plan as impractical.
01:00In his opinion, the infrastructure in the EU is far from ready for a complete switch to electric cars.
01:07There is a lack of charging stations, especially in rural areas and popular holiday destinations.
01:14This could make it much more difficult for travelers to rent a vehicle on the spur of the moment.
01:18Consumers who have previously relied on leasing models for business or private use could also be restricted in the future.
01:28Political reactions are not long in coming.
01:32CSU MEP Marcus Ferber has written a letter directly to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
01:38In it, he calls for the plan ban to be stopped.
01:44In his letter, he warns that company cars will then no longer be purchased out of conviction, but only to meet legal quotas as electric cars.
01:54Regardless of whether they are suitable for the intended purpose or not.
01:58Another key problem remains the price.
02:00Since electric vehicles are still significantly more expensive to purchase, the car rental industry will also be forced to adjust its prices.
02:09For customers, this means that rental cars could soon become significantly more expensive.
02:16In an already tense market with inflation and growing cost pressures, this would be a further setback for mobility in Europe.
02:22The EU Commission has now confirmed that it is working on a corresponding new regulation.
02:30However, it has not yet commented on the specific content.
02:34It remains unclear exactly what the regulation will look like and whether there will be any exceptions or transitional periods.
02:40You can read all the details about the planned ban on combustion engines in company fleets and rental cars, including assessments and political reactions, in the linked article.
