00:00We knew when we built this car, when we started driving it, this car was going to be brutally fast.
00:13No matter where we took it, we all talked and said, what tracks that we could go to show how dominant this car was.
00:21We want to pick these extremely prestigious, very famous tracks.
00:24We're not shying away from the fact that the race cars have been there and people know those times.
00:31We're not shying away from competitive times that are out there.
00:36It's a big undertaking to rent tracks across the country and travel people and ship parts and cars.
00:43It's not for the part.
00:45We want to set the bar extremely high.
00:47We're not trying to make this easy on ourselves.
00:49As development drivers, we don't do this stuff that often.
00:56Most of what we do is you're purposefully leaving some capacity in the car, right?
01:01You're trying to remember here's the issues I had here what I need to go fix.
01:05It's very different when you're trying to do fast and every matter.
01:11Gotoo got the most downforce we ever put on Corvette.
01:14We created a monster.
01:16Balancing development driving versus outright pace driving.
01:21It's something you have to learn because you want to drive underneath the car.
01:24You don't want to drive at the maximum effort car until it's time to do that.
01:28There aren't many times where you get to get in a car and just run a lap record.
01:34But given one chance, you do get that opportunity to fully send what can you do.
01:40This is Road America Fast Laps Day 2.
01:43Brian Wallace
01:43It's for being a pretty challenging track because the speeds are ridiculous.
01:53I think we're over 178 an hour three times on that track per lap.
01:58Road America is known to have a corner called the King.
02:00Not a lot of margin for error.
02:02There's been a lot of spectacular accidents there.
02:04And from all my racing background, I was very familiar with the corner and knew how to immediately approach the corner to get the max model car.
02:10For me, that was definitely one of the most challenging parts of the track because it leads on to a relatively long straightaway.
02:16Any minimum speed you lose in that corner translates the whole way down straightaway.
02:20So getting the most out of the car through that corner was really important to maintain a really good fast lap time.
02:26What the ZR1 did for me to go find is 5.2 seconds above and beyond the record.
02:37The amount of downforce this car puts on the high speed corners and approachability and everything we did in the setup of this car to make it approachable.
02:45It only took me three attempts and the third attempt is when I ran the 286.
02:55With walk-ins in a car that's this fast, it ends up falling to a lot of rhythm.
03:00The corners have a decent straight between them, but this car is so fast that all those corners become linked.
03:10So walking bland you get to the bus stop after a long uphill run.
03:13You brake for the bus stop and peak speed from there.
03:23It's left, right, left, right, left, right, and the straights between turn 6.
03:27And it's they look long with how fast it gets speed.
03:29You exit turn 6 and you're immediately into turn.
03:32Say you get out of turn 7.
03:33You're up over the hill and you're immediately into turn 8.
03:36You come out of turn 8.
03:37You're immediately into the turn end.
03:38It's just one after the other after the other car got great flow and it transitions really well.
03:43So getting in and out of those left to right combinations.
03:45Landon's fascinating first attempt.
03:47Red Barber driving road.
03:48Landon's probably my favorite in the country.
03:50Some very fast sections.
03:59The track is known for challenging cars with big power.
04:03There's two corners that really shine for the ZR1.
04:08It's turns 1 and turn 12 which are both extremely high's right handers.
04:14Turn 1 is a somewhat blind turn in.
04:18You have to go in committed to the speed and then it's a huge confidence corner where you just really need to know and trust that the car is going to stick.
04:25Very similar with turn 12 which is probably their most iconic corner.
04:30You're coming up a very steep hill and you go under their bridge which then drops downhill quite a bit.
04:35So, it's this blind up hill that's pretty much at max lat.
04:41You drop over the hill crest down the hill and you're basically looking right at their building and a giant wall.
04:47That's extremely intimidating.
04:49Yeah, the ZR1 just really shone there.
05:00I was the lucky guy that got to do two laps and it's mostly because at Virginia International Raceway both configurations are pretty well known.
05:06So, the full course, the perimeter course is the traditional course there.
05:14The grand course is what car and driver started with trying to emulate the NB green within our country.
05:19One element just the way we laid the schedule out.
05:23I was last, right?
05:24Everyone else had done their job.
05:27So, that's, you know, a little added pressure when you're the anchor leg essentially that everyone else is beating their PR split and you're coming in and, you know, got to finish the job.
05:35For V on the full course, the most demanding section is the high speed they are this flowing really high area where 165 meters per in this car turning in.
05:51So, you have to be very precise on your marks.
05:54And then at the end of that is to me the hardest turn.
05:57It's called South Bend.
05:58Instead of setting that up, you have to get far enough right coming off of a right-hand turn.
06:07So, you kind of have to pinch the exit but not give up speed to brake quickly and then turn in on this off-camber really fast turn.
06:16So, I was really happy that when I looked at the data, this car never dropped below 100 meters there, which is something significant.
06:23You have to turn in with confidence.
06:28You know where this ranks both from a personal and a professional standpoint second mission accomplished.
06:42For these are obscenely big gaps that we just threw down on every track we picked absolutely what the Z1 is.
