00:00Welcome to the video from the Auto Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:05Today we're talking about a topic that should be particularly exciting for motorhome fans.
00:09The weight limit for motorhomes with a Category B driving license is finally being increased to 4.1 tons.
00:17For over 20 years, caravaning associations have been campaigning to ensure that holders of a Category B driving license are allowed to drive heavier vehicles instead of just motorhomes up to 3.5 tons as before.
00:28Now the time has come.
00:31The European Parliament and the EU member states have agreed on an amendment to the EU Driving License Directive.
00:38This will increase the permissible total weight for motorhomes that can be driven with a Category B driving license to 4.1 tons.
00:47However, there are two restrictions.
00:49The first restriction affects all motorhomes without alternative drive systems.
00:53In order to use the higher weight, special training or a test is required, the exact details of which are up to the individual EU countries to determine.
01:03It will probably end up being a similar model to the B96 supplement for caravans.
01:13A one-day course at a driving school, but without a test.
01:16This addition also allows the driving of trailers weighing up to 4.1 tons, but does not constitute a separate driving license class, but merely an extension of Class B.
01:27The second restriction concerns vehicles with alternative drive systems, such as electric motorhomes.
01:36In the future, these will even be allowed to be driven with a Class B driving license without further training or testing, provided the driver has held the license for at least two years.
01:45Whether accident-free driving experience will also play a role has not yet been conclusively clarified.
01:54Why is all this so important?
01:56Since the introduction of the Class B driving license in 1999, there has been a kind of two-tier society among motorhome drivers.
02:05Those who still hold the old Class 3 driving license are allowed to drive vehicles weighing up to 7.1 tons.
02:10For everyone else, the limit was previously 3.5 tons.
02:15But modern motorhomes are getting heavier.
02:18The base vehicles are heavier, demands for comfort are rising, and e-bikes are now practically standard equipment.
02:27And then the electric drive will soon be added as an additional weight, so it's understandable that the Caravanning Industry Association IVD has long been calling for this limit to be raised.
02:37Thanks to modern safety technology, even heavy vehicles can now be driven easily and safely.
02:45The risk of accidents does not necessarily increase with weight.
02:49However, despite the agreement at EU level, patience is still required.
02:54The new directive must first be published in the official journal of the European Union before the member states can implement it into national law.
03:04They have a period of four years for this.
03:07So it's quite possible that this new regulation won't actually come into force until 2022.
03:13What do you think?
03:15Is it appropriate that the limits are being raised?
03:19Or should we be worried that everything is getting heavier and fatter and that the next increase to 5 tons or more may come in a few years?
03:26As always, you can find the link to read the article in our magazine in the video description.
03:33Was the information on the new weight limit for motorhomes with a B driving license interesting?
