00:17impressive big boxer engine. The BMW R20 concept caused a great stir at the renowned Concours
00:25Eleganzer at the Commerce in May of last year. BMW presented this spectacular show bike with
00:33great excitement and impressed everyone with its striking design and powerful 2000cc engine.
00:40The BMW R20, which is expected to go into series production in 2006, has now been officially
00:47registered with the German patent and trademark office, making it a promising highlight for
00:52all motorcycle enthusiasts. The production model of the BMW R20 is based on the concept
00:58version that already made a lasting impression at the BMW Motorrad days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
01:06With its 10% larger dimensions compared to the well-known R9T and R1290T models, the R20 now
01:13offers significantly more space for taller riders who may have felt cramped in previous models.
01:22The bobber-style solo saddle upholstered in Alcantara gives the rental version a look. However, a longer
01:29two-seater seat is planned for the production version and could be available as an option.
01:36The air-oil-cooled big boxer engine of the BMW R20 concept is the heart of this impressive motorcycle.
01:42With a displacement of 2000cc, it surpasses the previous models in the R18 series, which
01:49had a displacement of 1800cc. This increase in size required an increase in the bore and
01:56pistons to around 133mm, which means that the two 1.0L jugs each have a volume of 1.0L.
02:03A Real Highlight for Boxer Fans The engine of the R20 concept delivers an
02:10impressive 158Nm of torque and an output of 91hp. For the production version, however,
02:19an output of well over 100hp is targeted to meet the high demands of a road star.
02:26The chassis of the BMW R20 concept combines the geometric naked bike layout with sporty elements
02:32and is made of high-quality components. The double-cradle frame made of chrome-moleap steel tubing
02:38supports a sturdy upside-down telescopic fork, which, with a steering head angle of 22.5 degrees,
02:45ensures optimal stability. The fully adjustable Ohlin shock absorber at the rear enables dynamic
02:52the braking system. The braking system, manufactured in Sweden by ISR, is equipped with radially bolted
03:02calipers, each with six pistons on the double disc at the front and four pistons on the rear disc,
03:07guaranteeing outstanding braking performance. With a wheelbase of 1550mm, the R20 concept is only 34mm
03:19longer than the R1290, but 81mm shorter than the R18 Cruiser. The combination of a 200m rear tire
03:28and a front tire ensures balanced riding dynamics. The almost-closed aluminum rear wheel gives the
03:37concept a modern appearance, while the wire-spoke front wheel creates a classic contrast. Both wheels
03:44have a diameter of 17 inches, giving the motorcycle a sporty appearance. Another highlight of the BMW R20
03:53concept is the new Duo Paralever Rear Swing Arm, which is made of thick chrome-molybdenum steel tubes
03:59and aluminum struts. This design ensures that the typical lift movements during load changes are
04:06completely compensated, which significantly improves the stability and handling of the motorcycle.
04:14The open drive shaft, inspired by the R18 models, rotates visibly and gives the R20 concept an
04:21impressive show effect that makes the motorcycle even more attractive.
04:26The aluminum tank of the R20 concept is not only a visual highlight but also serves as functional storage
04:32space for electrical components and possibly as a partially concealing cover for a future airbox.
04:40The paint color hotter than pink, inspired by the disco style of the 70s, gives the tank a vibrant and
04:46eye-catching look that perfectly matches the retro-inspired design of the motorcycle.
04:53However, the 2x2 exhaust system of the BMW R20 concept is not yet legal for road use.
04:59The thick, megaphone-style headers, which lack soundproofing, do not comply with the required
05:06road traffic regulations. Furthermore, the concept model is still missing several essential elements
05:13such as a rear-view mirror and license plate holder, which are essential for the production version.
05:18However, the motorcycle is already equipped with a small digital display on the handlebar
05:23and LED lights that provide modern functionality. The elaborate matrix round headlight with a central
05:31main lens and a three-dimensionally printed daytime running light ring, as well as the taillights
05:36integrated into the solo saddle, complete the design and give the R20 concept a futuristic touch.
05:42Alexander Buchan, head of BMW Motorcycle Design, emphasized that the R20 concept does not represent a binding
05:53promise for a production version. The reactions to the motorcycle during and after the Eleganzer
06:00Concours will be crucial in assessing weather and how development will continue. Nevertheless,
06:06the registration of the R20 trademark with the German patent and trademark office is a strong
06:11indication that BMW has serious plans for series production. Boxer fans can therefore legitimately
06:20hope for a possible market launch in 2006, even if the currently open intake funnels and the
06:25non-road legal exhaust system still need to be revised. The design of the BMW R20 concept as a Bavarian muscle
06:36bike presents a major challenge, particularly with regard to transferring the characteristic features
06:41of the concept version to a production model. Marcus Flash, head of BMW Motorrods since November 2023,
06:50is personally driving the development of the R20. Given BMW's current pricing structure,
06:57the production version of the R20 is expected to cost well over €20,000.
07:05Interestingly, there was already a BMW R20 in 1937, but it was only equipped with a single-cylinder
07:12engine and a displacement of 200cc. A clear contrast to the current powerful version.
07:19The BMW R20 has the potential to become an outstanding motorcycle that combines retro aesthetics with
07:26modern technology and impressive performance. With its unique design, powerful big boxer engine,
07:33and high-quality workmanship, it sets new standards in the motorcycle world.
