00:00Once again, the 911 is reinventing itself.
00:08It was a very big treat for the whole engineering team.
00:13So it's a hybrid just to increase performance?
00:19I'm really curious to see how this tech is going to compare.
00:24Wow, I'm going to race the next Formula One driver.
00:30Welcome to the world premiere of the new Porsche 911 in Stuttgart.
00:43Since its birth, the Porsche 911 has caused a sensation by reinventing itself
00:47and repeatedly setting new standards for sports cars with technical innovations,
00:52but at the same time, remain true to itself.
00:55Today, I have quite the few special treats for you.
00:57Iconic cars, as well as great guests, fascinating tech,
01:01and not forgetting nail-biting race action.
01:03But first up, we will be talking to Frank Moser,
01:06who is the man responsible behind the $2 sports cars at Porsche.
01:10The intention is the one transfer of the model.
01:25Not to be sure how of the car is worth the rest of the những pass Х launches,
01:26but the limit is enough to measure the whole idea of the new version.
01:29You are the two having the natural network.
01:30And this one as big questions,
01:32so we can keep on meetingéŸpach for it enough time.
01:33Well, that looks like a microbiome.
01:35Iconic cars, but Iconic cars is currently a structure.
01:36Iconic cars, and Iconic cars,
01:37where Iconic cars,ă©ă cats reason to other little skyscŚŚ©Ăšre?
02:00Ich persönlich bin sehr froh, was du gemacht hast.
02:36The main highlight there is the new HD Matrix headlight.
02:41For the first time with one of our two-door sports cars,
02:44you can choose the HD Matrix headlights with 32,000 individually controlled LEDs.
02:50I'm a fan of this. The Renn lightbar, it's new, right?
02:53Yes. The LED arc runs seamlessly from the one side to the other without interruption.
02:59It seems bolder, wider to me. And overall, yes, subtle, but important changes when it comes to the iconic design.
03:09The interior, it's modern, even a little futuristic.
03:13The first feature you can see is the new 12.6-inch curved digital display.
03:20You can choose from seven different screens. It's a complete new driver experience.
03:25And you know what? I couldn't miss this. The start button. It's just like in the Porsche GT race cars.
03:30And of course, it's on the left side next to the steering wheel.
03:34And the mode switch comes as standard now, even in the 911 Carrera.
03:38We're actually making a lot of feature standard that used to be optional.
03:41But let's talk some numbers. I know a lot of people buy this car because of its performance.
03:45Yes. The flat-six twin-truble engine is a little stronger than before.
03:50We've gone through 394 horses and 450 newton-meters of torque.
03:56And with more engine power, bigger brakes are useful.
03:59And so we increase the size of the discs.
04:01The 911 Carrera Cabriolet. It's an absolute highlight.
04:11New technologies have continuously defined the milestones of this iconic sports car.
04:16Well, today, we're going to add another technological masterpiece to this impressive lineup.
04:22These cars embody technological innovations.
04:25It seemed controversial at the time.
04:27But really, looking back, it proved the foresight of Porsche engineering.
04:32Tell us more.
04:33This is where the 911 story begins.
04:35Back in the 60s.
04:37Instead of further developing the 356, Porsche decided to construct a completely new car.
04:42An innovation with 130 horsepower.
04:45Incredible power for the time.
04:47Well, thus creating an icon to be, right?
04:49I mean, this really set the bar for sports cars and their performance levels.
04:57Our first water-cooled 911 from 1997.
05:06This technology allowed for a more efficient cooling and Porsche was able to meet higher emission standards.
05:12This car has at least 300 horsepower.
05:15And for some, going water-cooled, it was blasphemous, wasn't it?
05:21But still, this car is an essential stepping stone to the 911 success story.
05:26Absolutely anything we do is driven by the desire to deliver in terms of performance.
05:31And now it's time to add another milestone.
05:34This is it.
05:55The new 911 Carrera GTS.
05:58It's beautiful.
05:59I mean, what a way to present the car.
06:01She's great, but quite different from the car we saw just now.
06:04That's because the GTS features active aerodynamics.
06:08You can see the 10 vertical adjustable flaps here at the front.
06:13And look at the wheels.
06:15The wheels have the typical GTS central locking system.
06:19And the inside, it looks more sporty.
06:22Absolutely.
06:23It's a typical GTS interior with race tags and the contrast stitchings.
06:28I've heard that it's a hybrid car now.
06:30Doesn't that add too much additional weight to a sports car?
06:34No, absolutely not.
06:36It's a very special hybrid focused on performance, maximum boost and only very little additional weight.
06:43What is the secret behind it?
06:44We wanted a solution that really enhances performance while keeping the weight down.
06:49All while changing the architecture as little as possible so we can stay true to the character of the 911.
06:55And how did you do it?
06:58In the rear, there's the absolutely new powerful flat 6 attached to the PDK, which now has an integrated electric motor.
07:07In the front, we have a compact high voltage battery.
07:12And finally, there's an electric motor in the turbocharger.
07:17And that makes it magic.
07:19So the hybrid system is not meant to extend the range of driving, but to boost performance.
07:25So what's the power output of the whole system?
07:28The 911 Carrera GTS has a whopping 541 horsepower.
07:3361 horsepower more than the previous car.
07:35It delivers 610 newton meter of torque and has a top speed of 312 kilometers per hour.
07:43And most importantly, the weight of the car is 1595 kilograms.
07:49That means only 50 kilo more than before.
07:52Those are some impressive numbers, but I want to know more about the hybrid.
07:55Thomas Brandl is one of our masterminds behind that drivetrain system.
07:59He will give you all the details.
08:02Hi Thomas.
08:03Hi Claire.
08:04But tell me, the 911 Carrera GTS, it's a hybrid now.
08:08What did you do?
08:09The essential innovation is the electric turbocharger on the flat 6 engine.
08:13It can do two different things.
08:16It delivers compressed air immediately to the engine to reduce the turbo lag to a minimum.
08:21And second, it recovers heat energy out of the exhaust gas to add even more power to the drivetrain.
08:26Does that mean as a driver have to activate it?
08:29Not at all.
08:30The system reacts to throttle and brake only.
08:33You can visualize it like a puzzle with the flat 6 engine and the electric turbocharger, the E-motor and the PDK and the high-performance battery in the front.
08:43When the control units put the piece together, what you get is a very exciting drive.
08:48So it automatically shuttles through the combinations depending on how I put my foot down.
08:54Exactly.
08:55When you need more power, the system reacts within split seconds, giving you more boost and torque fill up to 150 Nm for a faster and better acceleration.
09:04Of course, we can do mechanical recuperation when the car is slowing down or braking.
09:09And my favorite feature is the high-performance feature.
09:12When you use the turbocharger to release extra energy running on full throttle or even on top speed.
09:19So even in this operating state, the turbocharger is able to recover energy, to put it on the E-motor and if necessary, the battery joins in to put even more energy, releasing all the 541 horses.
09:33Thomas, that sounds like some amazing precision engineering.
09:37Thank you for that deep dive.
09:38But I promise everyone for some race action.
09:41Unfortunately, we do have Matt Watson and a certain former Formula One driver and sports car world champion who are going to line up the 911 Carrera GTS and go head-to-head with its predecessor.
09:54Thomas, how do you think this will go?
09:55Let me put it this way.
09:57The data doesn't lie.
09:58Spoken like a true engineer.
10:00Well, let's take a look and see how this goes.
10:03I'm super excited because I'm sat on a runway in the brand new 911 Carrera GTS and next to me is the previous generation 911 Carrera GTS.
10:14And we're going to have a drag race to see how their performance compares over the standing quarter mile.
10:18So to give the previous generation model a fighting chance, we've got someone to drive that car who has a bit of experience in racing and racing Porsches in particular.
10:29Let's go over to him.
10:30Hey, Mark. How you doing?
10:32Very good, mate.
10:33Very good.
10:35So what do you think is going to happen here? Have you got a chance?
10:39I'm born ready, but I'm a bit nervous about what you're in. Looks quick.
10:43And so you should be.
10:45So, well, that's how this plays out, right?
10:48Yeah, you've got plenty of experience, but so have I.
10:51And obviously it's all going to be down to skill and nothing to do with the cars at all or the new technology.
10:56It's going to have everything to do with it.
10:58Yeah.
10:59Well, you need a lot of talent to drive in a straight line, mate.
11:01So you're well versed in that.
11:04You're well versed in that.
11:05Yeah, let's see who can press the accelerator the hardest.
11:09Come on.
11:10Three, two, one, go.
11:11Three, two, one.
11:14Yes!
11:19Come on!
11:22Wow!
11:23That hooked up.
11:31Yeah, Mark.
11:32What do you think about my driving skills?
11:34I do like your anticipation, son.
11:36And what we're going to do now is have a rolling race over the half mile.
11:40So we'll do a roll-on in second gear from 50 kilometres an hour.
11:44Are you ready?
11:45Let's go, Matt.
11:45Sounds good.
11:46Everything's ready here.
11:48OK, come on then.
11:50Let's get into second.
11:52Get to 50.
11:53Right, here we go.
11:54Three, two, one, go.
11:57Whoa!
12:00Come on!
12:02Woo-hoo-hoo!
12:03Oh, my gosh!
12:07Yeah!
12:09I am loving this!
12:21How was that for you, Mark?
12:23It was wonderful for me.
12:26Yeah.
12:27I can't match you, mate.
12:29Need a little bit more throaty bottom in.
12:32Well, that was fun.
12:34I'll tell you what, though.
12:35The data doesn't lie.
12:39Well, Frank, I didn't expect that the hybrid system would have that much of an impact on
12:44the quarter mile.
12:45That's simply testament to how good the new T-Hybrid drivetrain is.
12:50Well, I was going to say, a drag race, it's nice.
12:53But how does it perform on a track when you combine acceleration with the lateral performance?
12:58Of course, we put all our cars on the test track, and the NĂŒrburgring-Nordschleife is one of our preferred test tracks.
13:05So, we put Jörg behind the wheel.
13:07Have a look.
13:08Have a look.
13:14With the hybridization, the response feels almost like that of a naturally aspirated engine.
13:19You step on the gas and it accelerates immediately, which is what you want as a driver, especially
13:24on the racetrack.
13:25The work that the engineers in Weissacht accomplish is impressive.
13:28What they achieve from generation to generation is a real pleasure as a driver.
13:34Frank, that GTS badge is well-deserved.
13:36What a spectacular time.
13:38It is 8.7 seconds faster than the predecessor.
13:41And to bring all the power to the road, we optimized the chassis.
13:46We also increased the size of the rear tires to 315 mils.
13:50But there was a wing on the car, right?
13:52You're absolutely right.
13:53That was the optional aero kit.
13:55And what about the suspension?
13:57The refined sports suspension and the rear wheel steering, that comes as standard now,
14:01contribute immensely to the optimized performance of the car.
14:05And if I'm not wrong, you also drove the car?
14:08I drove the car several times during development.
14:14It's an absolute blast.
14:25It looks like the new Porsche 911 will be in a league of icons.
14:32Fresher on the outside and on the inside, way more digital.
14:36The performance.
14:37Well, the new T-Hybrid, it is innovative, powerful and a real game changer.
14:55It's aided government, Ben.
14:56The best way to do the engine, right?
14:56The new service.
14:58It's a revolutionary punch.
14:58I, you know, with my head of
15:22...eine andere.
15:24...eine andere.
15:26Komm, bitte.
15:28Alright.
15:30Okay, ich werde nicht machen es einfach fĂŒr ihn.
15:32Ich muss den Seat in eine wirkliche gewisse Position,
15:34weil ich weiĂ, dass er ziemlich tall ist.
15:42There you go, gut luck, gut luck.
15:44Thank you.
15:46He hat sogar den TĂŒr auf mich.
15:48Oh!
15:50What a gentleman.
15:52Thank you.
15:54Thank you.
15:56Come on, start the race, start the race.
15:58Come on, quick, come on, start the race.
16:00Can I get in here? Start it.
16:02What a combo.
16:04Three, two, one.
16:11Oh, no!
16:13Oh, my God!
16:20I think I've just been found out.
16:26You just took off.
16:29I had no chance.
16:31This is quick.
16:32Like, this is quick, but that, that is wow.
16:36Wow.
16:37This is hooked up and deep hearted.
16:39Oh, ho, ho, ho!
16:41Off it up!
16:42Up!
16:43.
16:46.
16:46.
16:48.
16:52.
16:54.
17:02.
17:02.
