00:00Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge.
00:03Today we are going to take a trip up to Wisconsin to talk about the infamous case of Jeffrey Dahmer,
00:08a.k.a. the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster.
00:11Jeffrey Dahmer is one of those serial killers whose name will forever live in infamy.
00:16When you think of serial killers, he's right up there with Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Charles Manson,
00:21not only because of the number of victims, but the manner in which he chose to handle the bodies after each murder.
00:27So let's go ahead and take a look at this case.
00:38Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born May 21, 1960, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer.
00:46At the time, Lionel was a chemistry student and Joyce was a teletype machine instructor.
00:51Lionel was a very quiet man, but due to his studies, he was away from home a lot.
00:55Joyce was a hypochondriac who had depression and would spend a lot of time in bed, and demanded constant attention.
01:02Jeffrey was described as a happy and energetic child until he had to undergo surgery for a double hernia just before his fourth birthday.
01:09In school, his teachers described Jeffrey as a quiet and timid child and showed early signs of abandonment,
01:15due to the fact that Joyce spent more and more time in bed while pregnant with their second child.
01:20In 1966, the family moved to Doylestown, Ohio.
01:24Joyce gave birth in December, and Jeffrey was allowed to pick the name of his baby brother.
01:29He named him David.
01:30Jeffrey developed a fascination with dead animals from an early age.
01:33One day, his dad was cleaning out some dead animals from underneath the house.
01:37He placed bones into a metal bucket.
01:39Jeffrey heard the sound that the bones made when hitting the bucket,
01:43and he would pick them up and drop them back in, over and over again, fascinated by the sound.
01:48In 1968, the family moved again to Bath Township, Ohio.
01:52The house was surrounded by one and a half acres of woodland,
01:55and there was a small hut not that far away from the house.
01:58That's where Jeffrey stored his collection of dead insects and small animals like chipmunks and squirrels,
02:03preserving them in jars of formaldehyde.
02:05During a chicken dinner, he asked his father what would happen if he placed animal bones into bleach.
02:11Thinking that Jeffrey was exploring his scientific curiosity,
02:14he showed the boy how you would go about bleaching and preserving animal bones.
02:18He took notes and used these techniques to preserve animal bones from roadkill that he would find.
02:23He also wanted to see what animals looked like on the inside.
02:26Once he was done, he would bury the animals just beside the hut,
02:29placing the skull of the animals on top of makeshift crosses.
02:33One of his friends remembers seeing a decapitated dog nailed to a tree,
02:37and the skull impaled with a stick.
02:39While all of this was going on, his mother kept taking more equinol laxatives and sleeping pills,
02:45keeping her away from her husband and children.
02:47Lionel and Joyce would fight almost all the time, and it deeply affected the kids.
02:52By the time Jeffrey was a freshman at Revere High School,
02:55he was drinking beer and hard liquor during the daytime.
02:58He would either hide it in a flask or have it in a cup.
03:01One of his classmates asked him why he was drinking scotch in class.
03:05He would say,
03:05Even though he was drinking, his teachers remembered him as being polite and highly intelligent,
03:12but with average grades.
03:13He was a good tennis player, and for a brief time, he was in a high school band.
03:18But even with these activities, Jeffrey was considered to be an outcast.
03:21The only time he would grab the attention of his peers is when he would stage pranks,
03:26which became known as doing a dommer.
03:28Like one time at the mall, there were free samples of sunflower seeds.
03:32He would eat the seeds, then start screaming,
03:35I'm allergic! I'm allergic!
03:36And would fake a seizure.
03:38When he hit puberty, Jeffrey knew he was gay,
03:40but never told his parents about it and just kept it hidden.
03:43He had fantasies about having complete control over his totally submissive male partner.
03:48When he was about 16, a male jogger caught his eye,
03:51and he had fantasies about knocking him out and having his way with him sexually.
03:55He hid in some bushes one day with a baseball bat and waited for the same jogger to pass by.
04:01But for some reason, he did not show up that day.
04:03This was his first attempt at attacking someone.
04:06By 1977, Jeffrey's grades were beginning to slip, so his parents hired a tutor.
04:11Around the same time, his parents were trying to work on their marriage by going to counseling.
04:15But once Lionel found out that Joyce had a brief affair, the marriage was over.
04:20They filed for divorce, and Lionel moved out temporarily to a motel.
04:23Jeffrey graduated high school in May 1978,
04:26not long after Joyce and David moved out of the house after the divorce was finalized.
04:32Joyce got custody of David, and they moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin,
04:36leaving Jeffrey at home alone, abandoning him.
04:39Even though he was 18 and an adult, it did affect him a lot.
04:43I still think it's pretty messed up that she just left him there and didn't even tell Lionel.
04:47Like, what the hell?
04:48Anyways, I digress.
04:56With the home now empty and no one to tell him what to do,
05:00Jeffrey started to form new fantasies in his head
05:02about picking up a hitchhiker, bringing him home, and having his way with him.
05:07While driving down the road on June 18, 1978,
05:10he noticed a male hitchhiker with his shirt off on the side of the road.
05:14He stopped to pick him up.
05:15It was Stephen Hicks, age 19.
05:17He was on his way to a rock concert at Chippewa Lake Park, Ohio.
05:21Jeffrey invited him over for a few beers.
05:24The sight of bare-chested Stephen stirred up sexual feelings,
05:27but once Stephen started talking about girls,
05:30he knew any passes would be rebuffed.
05:32After several hours of talking, drinking, and listening to music,
05:36Stephen decided it was time to head out.
05:38But Jeffrey wanted him to stay,
05:39so he grabbed a 10-pound dumbbell
05:41and struck Stephen in the back of the head twice, knocking him out.
05:45Then he strangled him to death.
05:46Afterwards, he stripped his clothes off, exploring Stephen's chest and hands.
05:51Then he masturbated over the corpse.
05:53The next day, he dissected the body in the basement.
05:56He buried the remains in a shallow grave in the backyard.
05:59Several weeks later, he dug up the remains,
06:01paring the flesh from the bones.
06:02He dissolved the flesh in acid, then flushed it down the toilet.
06:05He then crushed the bones up with a sledgehammer
06:08and scattered them in the woods behind his house.
06:11Jeffrey checked the TV and newspapers
06:12to see if anyone was looking for Stephen,
06:15but no reports were found.
06:16He had gotten away with his first murder.
06:18Six weeks after the murder,
06:20Lionel and his new fiancée returned to the house
06:23to find Jeffrey was living there alone.
06:25In August, Lionel had Jeffrey enrolled in Ohio State University,
06:29majoring in business.
06:30He flunked out of his first term due to his drinking,
06:33Even though Lionel paid for his second term in advance,
06:36Jeffrey dropped out of college.
06:38Trying to find him some kind of direction,
06:40Lionel urged him to enlist in the United States Army in 1979.
06:44He trained as a medical specialist,
06:46then was shipped off to West Germany as a combat medic.
06:49Jeffrey's first year, he was reported to be
06:51an average to slightly above average soldier.
06:54But once again, his drinking was affecting his performance.
06:57So in March of 1981,
06:59he was deemed unsuitable for military service
07:02and was later discharged from the Army with an honorable discharge.
07:05He was given a plane ticket to wherever he wanted to go.
07:08Jeffrey chose to go down to Miami Beach, Florida
07:11because he didn't want to have to face his father.
07:14Plus, he was tired of the cold weather.
07:16He got a job at a deli and lived in a motel.
07:19He would blow his paycheck on alcohol,
07:21so he was kicked out of the motel due to non-payment.
07:24He would sleep on the beach at night
07:25while still working at the deli.
07:27It wasn't long before he grew tired
07:29and decided to call his father for help.
07:31Once he was back in Ohio,
07:33his father sent Jeffrey to live with his mother,
07:35Jeffrey's grandmother, in West Allis, Wisconsin.
07:38It seemed like things were taking a turn for the better.
07:40He attended church with his grandmother,
07:43did chores around the house,
07:44actively looked for work,
07:45but he did continue to drink and smoke.
07:47He landed a job as a phlebotomist
07:49at Milwaukee Blood Plasma Center.
07:52After 10 months of working there,
07:54he was laid off.
07:54Shortly before losing his job,
07:56he was arrested for indecent exposure.
07:59He was convicted and fined $50 plus court costs.
08:02In January 1985,
08:04Jeffrey was hired as a mixer
08:06at the Milwaukee Ambrosia Chocolate Factory,
08:08working the night shift from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
08:12six days a week,
08:13getting Saturday nights off.
08:14Not long after getting his job,
08:16Jeffrey was reading at the West Allis Public Library
08:19when a man threw a wadded-up piece of paper at him.
08:22He opened it up and found it was
08:24a proposition for oral sex in the restroom.
08:26He turned it down,
08:28but this sparked those fantasies
08:29that he kept suppressed from years ago
08:31about dominating and controlling someone.
08:38Jeffrey started frequenting the gay bars,
08:41bathhouses, and bookstores in late 1985.
08:44Before that,
08:45he stole a male mannequin from a store
08:47and masturbated on it.
08:48His grandmother made him get rid of it
08:50when she found it in his closet.
08:52He seemed to like the bathhouses more
08:54because it was a more relaxing environment,
08:56but when it came time to have a bit of fun
08:59with random guys that he met,
09:00he found that he liked giving rather than receiving
09:03and didn't like the fact that they moved so much.
09:05So he started drugging their drinks
09:07so that he could have his way,
09:09then leave like nothing happened.
09:10This happened a dozen times
09:12until the bathhouse found out what was going on
09:15and they revoked his membership.
09:16He would continue to visit gay bars and bookstores.
09:19Once he found someone he liked,
09:20he would take them to a hotel room
09:23and continue on as normal.
09:24Jeffrey was considered to be a honey in the gay community
09:27and he had no trouble getting dates,
09:29but he was a jealous and selfish guy,
09:31so relationships wouldn't last very long.
09:33He met Stephen Toomey on November 20th, 1987
09:37at one of the bars.
09:38They hit it off
09:39and decided to go back to the Ambassador Hotel.
09:42Jeffrey gave Stephen a drink,
09:43laced with sleeping pills,
09:45and it wasn't long before Stephen passed out.
09:47He laid down beside him
09:48and eventually blacked out as well.
09:50When he woke up,
09:51Stephen's chest was crushed in
09:53and had heavy bruising around his chest.
09:55Jeffrey himself had bruises and blood on his knuckles
09:58and bruising on his forearm.
10:00He never intended on killing Stephen
10:02and has no memory of beating him to death.
10:04He quickly cleaned himself up,
10:06went out and purchased a large suitcase,
10:08stuffed his body inside said suitcase,
10:11and took a cab home,
10:13back to his grandmother's house.
10:14He severed the head, arms, and legs from the torso,
10:17stripped the flesh from the bone,
10:19cut it up into small pieces,
10:21crushing the bones with a sledgehammer,
10:23then put the parts into trash bags,
10:25then threw it away in the garbage
10:26with the normal household trash.
10:28He kept the head for a couple of weeks.
10:30Jeffrey wanted to keep the skull,
10:32so he boiled the head
10:33in a mixture of solyx and bleach.
10:35Unfortunately for him,
10:37the process left the skull
10:38way too fragile to keep,
10:39so he crushed it up and threw it away.
10:41It seems that he had a pattern to his murders.
10:44Lure them back to his place,
10:45offer them a drink spiked with a sedative.
10:48Once the person was out,
10:49he'd strangle them.
10:50Two months later,
10:51after murdering Stephen Toomey,
10:53he met 14-year-old prostitute James Doxtater.
10:56He lured the boy back to his house
10:58with an offer of $50
11:00to pose for nude pictures.
11:01They engaged in sexual activity,
11:04then Jeffrey gave him a drug-laced drink,
11:06waited for him to pass out,
11:07then strangled him on the cellar floor.
11:09He left the body there for one week
11:11before dismembering it,
11:13doing the same exact thing.
11:14He even tried to bleach the skull,
11:16and the same result happened.
11:18It was too brittle,
11:19so he smashed it into pieces
11:20and threw everything out in the trash.
11:22On March 24, 1988,
11:24Jeffrey met 22-year-old Richard Guerrero
11:27outside a gay bar called The Phoenix.
11:29He offered $50 to Richard
11:31just to spend the rest of the night with him.
11:33Once again,
11:34they went back to his grandmother's house,
11:36drugged him with a lace drink,
11:37then strangled him with a leather strap.
11:39He then performed oral sex on the corpse.
11:42He dismembered the body within 24 hours,
11:44but keeping the skull for several months
11:46until he threw it away in the trash.
11:48On April 23,
11:49he lured another man back to his grandmother's house,
11:52drugging him with some lace coffee.
11:54This time,
11:55his plans were interrupted
11:56when his grandmother walked in on him with the man.
11:59So his plans changed.
12:01He dropped the guy off
12:02at County General Hospital
12:03while he was still unconscious.
12:05Later that year,
12:06in September of 1988,
12:08Jeffrey's grandmother had had enough
12:10and asked him to move out.
12:12She was tired of his drinking
12:13and bringing young men to her home
12:15and the occasional bad smell
12:16coming from the basement and garage.
12:19So he found an apartment on North 24th Street.
12:21He moved in on September 25th,
12:24but then just two days after moving in,
12:26he was arrested for drugging
12:27and molesting a 13-year-old boy.
12:29On January 30th, 1989,
12:32he pled guilty to charges
12:33of second-degree sexual assault
12:35and of enticing a child for immoral purposes.
12:39Sentencing for the assault
12:40was suspended until May.
12:42He moved back in with his grandmother
12:44the two months after his conviction
12:46and two months prior to his sentencing.
12:48Jeffrey killed 24-year-old Anthony Sear.
12:51They met at a gay bar on March 25th, 1989.
12:55He wasn't looking to commit another murder,
12:57but shortly before the bar closed,
12:59Anthony just started talking to him.
13:01They went back to his grandmother's house,
13:03had oral sex,
13:04then gave him a drink laced with a sedative.
13:07Once he was asleep,
13:08Jeffrey strangled him.
13:09He went through his ritual
13:10of dismembering the body,
13:11but this time he placed him in the bathtub
13:13and then attempted to flay the body.
13:16He dismembered the body,
13:17putting them in the trash bags,
13:18but this time Jeffrey kept some body parts
13:21because he found Anthony
13:22to be exceptionally attractive.
13:24So he kept the head and genitalia,
13:26preserving them in acetone,
13:28then stored them in a wooden box,
13:30which he later placed in his work locker.
13:32When he moved to his next apartment,
13:34he took the remains with him.
13:35On May 23rd, 1989,
13:37Jeffrey was sentenced to five years probation
13:40and one year in the House of Corrections
13:42with work release permits
13:44in order that he would be able to keep his job.
13:46He was also required to register as a sex offender.
13:50Two months before his scheduled release
13:52from the work camp,
13:53Jeffrey was paroled from his regime.
13:55His five-year probation imposed in 1989
13:58began at this point.
14:00He briefly stayed with his grandmother
14:01before renting an apartment of his own.
14:09On May 14th, 1990,
14:12Jeffrey moved out of his grandmother's house
14:14and into the Oxford Apartments
14:16at 924 North 25th Street, apartment 213,
14:20taking with him the mummified remains
14:22of Anthony Sears.
14:23Even though this was a high-crime area,
14:25the apartment was close to his workplace,
14:27furnished, and at $300 per month,
14:30including all of the bills,
14:32excluding electricity,
14:33it was pretty affordable.
14:35Within a week of moving in,
14:36Jeffrey lured 32-year-old male prostitute,
14:39Raymond Smith,
14:40with a promise of $50 for sex.
14:42He once again drugged him with a laced drink
14:45and strangled him.
14:46The next day,
14:47he bought a Polaroid camera
14:48and took pictures of Raymond
14:50in suggested poses.
14:51He dismembered the body in the bathroom,
14:53foiled the legs, arms, and pelvis
14:55in a steel pot with Soilix,
14:57then rinsed the bones in the sink.
14:59He put the remainder of the skeleton
15:01in the drum of acid.
15:02He was able to preserve the skull,
15:04spray-painting it white.
15:05He placed the skull alongside
15:07the skull of Anthony
15:08on top of a metal filing cabinet.
15:10In June 1990,
15:12Jeffrey lured 27-year-old Edward Smith
15:14to his apartment.
15:16He drugged him,
15:16strangled him,
15:17but at this time,
15:18instead of trying to preserve the bones
15:20in the usual way,
15:21he wanted to try and freeze them
15:22in hopes it would not retain moisture.
15:24But it didn't work.
15:25So he threw them into the acid.
15:27He tried to preserve the skull
15:29by drying it in the oven,
15:30only for it to explode.
15:32Less than three months
15:33after the murder of Edward,
15:34he lured 22-year-old Ernest Miller.
15:37The two of them met
15:38just outside of the bookstore.
15:39He offered $50
15:40just to listen to his heart and stomach.
15:43When Jeffrey attempted oral sex,
15:45Ernest said,
15:45that'll cost you extra.
15:47He got up and made him a drink,
15:48but he only had two sleeping pills left,
15:51knowing that it would not be enough.
15:52He slashed Ernest's neck with a knife.
15:55He bled to death within minutes.
15:56He took photos of the body
15:57in different poses
15:58before putting him in the bathtub.
16:00This time,
16:01he would wrap up the heart,
16:02bicep,
16:03and portions of the flesh from the legs
16:05in plastic bags
16:06and place them in the fridge,
16:07which he intended on eating later.
16:09He was able to preserve more bones
16:11and the skull,
16:12painting it and placing it
16:14with the rest of his collection.
16:15He cooked the flesh with oil
16:17and vegetables
16:18and describing it
16:19as having a beef-like flavor.
16:21On September 24th,
16:23David Thomas,
16:23age 22,
16:25was approached by Jeffrey
16:26at the Grand Avenue Mall.
16:28Jeffrey persuaded him
16:29to return to his apartment
16:30for a few drinks,
16:31with the additional money
16:33for nude photographs.
16:34But once he was knocked out
16:35by the sedatives,
16:36Jeffrey decided that David
16:38wasn't his type.
16:39He decided to strangle him anyways
16:40because he didn't want David
16:42to be angry for drugging him.
16:44He also didn't preserve
16:45any body parts,
16:46but did take pictures
16:47of the dismembering process,
16:49which would help identify
16:50his body later.
16:51In February 1991,
16:53Jeffrey lured 17-year-old
16:54Curtis Strotter,
16:55who was standing at a bus stop.
16:57He offered money
16:58in exchange for nude photos
17:00and possibly sex.
17:01He drugged him,
17:02cuffed his hands behind his back,
17:03and strangled him
17:04with a leather strap.
17:05This time he preserved his skull,
17:07hands, and genitals,
17:08and took pictures
17:09of the dismembering process.
17:11Less than two months later,
17:12on April 7th,
17:13Jeffrey met 19-year-old
17:14Errol Lindsay,
17:15who was on his way
17:16to get a key cut.
17:17He lured him back
17:18to his apartment
17:19where he drugged him,
17:20then drilled a hole
17:21on top of his head
17:22and poured hydrochloric acid
17:24into it.
17:25Errol woke up
17:26after the experiment,
17:27saying,
17:28I have a headache.
17:29What time is it?
17:30Jeffrey was hoping
17:31that he would create
17:32a zombie sex slave
17:33from his experiment,
17:35but was disappointed
17:36with the results.
17:36So he drugged him again
17:37and strangled the man to death.
17:39He preserved the skull
17:40and had the body
17:41laying in the bathtub
17:43with cold water and salt,
17:45hoping to preserve it,
17:46but it became too brittle.
17:48By this time,
17:49neighbors had began
17:49to complain
17:50of the smell
17:51coming from apartment 213.
17:53The building manager
17:54spoke to Jeffrey
17:55on two occasions.
17:56His first excuse
17:57was that his freezer broke
17:59and that a lot of meat
18:00had spoiled.
18:01On the second occasion,
18:02he told him
18:03that his tropical fish
18:04had died recently
18:05and he would take care
18:06of the problem.
18:07Neighbors also complained
18:08about the noises,
18:09hearing a chainsaw
18:10and what sounded
18:11like heavy objects falling.
18:13But Jeffrey was starting
18:14to have a huge problem.
18:15Bodies were piling up
18:16and it was really
18:17getting out of control,
18:18but his urges
18:19continued to take over him.
18:20On May 26, 1991,
18:23Jeffrey encountered
18:23a 14-year-old Laotian boy
18:25named Conorak Synthesinfelm
18:27on Wisconsin Avenue.
18:29He didn't know it
18:29at the time,
18:30but Conorak was
18:31the younger brother
18:32of the boy
18:32he had molested
18:33years earlier.
18:34He offered him money
18:35in exchange for nude photos.
18:37He was reluctant
18:38to go with Jeffrey,
18:39but decided to give in.
18:40He took pictures
18:41of the boy
18:42in his underwear,
18:43then drugged him
18:44and performed oral sex
18:45on him.
18:46He drilled a hole
18:46on top of Conorak's head
18:48and injected hydrochloric acid
18:50into the frontal lobe.
18:51He placed the boy
18:52on the bed.
18:53Little did the boy know
18:54that on the floor
18:55of the bedroom
18:56laid the body
18:56of 31-year-old Tony Hughes,
18:59which Jeffrey had killed
19:00three days prior.
19:01He drank a few beers
19:02before deciding
19:03to go out to a bar
19:04for a few more drinks.
19:06On his way back,
19:07Jeffrey noticed Conorak
19:08had escaped
19:09and was wandering
19:09the streets
19:10naked and disoriented.
19:12Two ladies
19:12had called the police
19:13to report this
19:14and were already
19:15on the scene.
19:16Jeffrey convinced
19:17the officers
19:17that his 19-year-old boyfriend,
19:20John Hamon,
19:21had too much to drink
19:22following a lover's quarrel.
19:24The police officers
19:25bought the story
19:26and were making their way
19:27back up to Jeffrey's apartment.
19:29The women that called
19:30were extremely upset
19:31by this,
19:31but one of the officers
19:32yelled at them
19:33to butt out,
19:34shut the hell up,
19:35and do not interfere.
19:36They walked back
19:37to the apartment.
19:38Jeffrey showed the pictures
19:39and the clothes
19:40and other belongings
19:41were here,
19:42proving to them
19:42that he was telling the truth.
19:44The officers investigated
19:45the smell
19:45by briefly peeking
19:47into the bedroom,
19:48but didn't see anything,
19:49so the officers left.
19:50He gave Conorak
19:51another injection of acid,
19:53which ultimately killed him.
19:54On June 30th,
19:55Jeffrey was traveling
19:56through Chicago
19:57when 20-year-old Matt Turner
19:58caught his eye.
20:00Matt was standing
20:00at a bus stop.
20:01He offered to take him
20:02back to Milwaukee
20:03for a professional photo shoot.
20:05Once at the apartment,
20:06he drugged,
20:07strangled,
20:07and dismembered Matt
20:08and placed his head
20:09and internal organs
20:11in separate plastic bags
20:12in the freezer.
20:13Five days later,
20:14he lured 23-year-old
20:15Jeremiah Weinberger
20:16from a Chicago bar
20:18to his apartment
20:18on the promise
20:19of spending the weekend
20:20with him.
20:21He drugged Jeremiah,
20:22drilled a hole in his head,
20:23and injected him twice
20:25with boiling water,
20:26sending him into a coma
20:27from which he died
20:28two days later.
20:29On July 15th,
20:30Jeffrey encountered
20:3124-year-old Oliver Lacey
20:33at the corner
20:34of 27th and Kilbourne,
20:36offering him money
20:36for nude photos.
20:38They engaged in sexual activity
20:39before Jeffrey drugged him.
20:41He wanted to spend
20:42more time with him,
20:43but couldn't seem
20:44to knock him out
20:44with chloroform,
20:45so he strangled him,
20:46had sex with the body,
20:48then dismembered him,
20:49keeping the head
20:50and the heart
20:50in the fridge
20:51and placed the rest
20:52of his body
20:52in the freezer.
20:53At this time,
20:54he called in sick from work
20:56and was suspended
20:57for taking too much time off.
20:58On July 19th,
20:59Jeffrey was fired.
21:01Upon learning the news,
21:02Jeffrey lured
21:0325-year-old Joseph Bradoff
21:05to his apartment,
21:06he strangled him
21:07and left the body
21:07laying in the bed
21:09for two days
21:09until he discovered
21:11there were maggots
21:11covering his head.
21:13He kept the head
21:14in the fridge
21:14and placed the body
21:15in the drum of acid
21:16along with his
21:17other two victims.
21:18On July 22nd, 1991,
21:28Jeffrey approached
21:29three men
21:29with an offer
21:30of $100
21:31to accompany him
21:32to his apartment
21:33to pose for nude photos,
21:34drink beer,
21:35and simply keep him company.
21:3632-year-old Tracy Edwards
21:38agreed to go back
21:39to the apartment.
21:40Upon entering the apartment,
21:41he noticed a strong smell
21:42and saw boxes
21:43of hydrochloric acid
21:45on the floor,
21:46which Jeffrey claimed
21:47to use for cleaning bricks.
21:48Jeffrey placed a handcuff
21:50on Tracy's wrist
21:51while he was distracted
21:52looking at the fish tank.
21:53He was then brought
21:54to the bedroom
21:55where the movie
21:55Exorcist III was playing.
21:57He noticed the blue
21:5857-gallon drum
22:00in the corner of the room
22:01was where the smell
22:02was coming from.
22:03Jeffrey took out a knife
22:04and told him
22:04he wanted to
22:05take nude photos of him.
22:07Trying to get him
22:08on his good side,
22:09he unbuttoned his shirt,
22:10but Jeffrey simply
22:11turned around
22:11and fixated on the movie,
22:13rocking back and forth
22:14and chanting something,
22:16but Tracy couldn't quite
22:17make out what he was saying.
22:18He then turned his attention
22:20back to Tracy,
22:21putting his head
22:22on his chest
22:23and listening to his heart.
22:24Jeffrey told him
22:25he was going to eat his heart.
22:27He still had the knife
22:28in his hand.
22:28Tracy, not wanting
22:29to be attacked,
22:30reassured him
22:31that he was his friend
22:32and that he wasn't
22:33going to run away.
22:34After many hours,
22:35Tracy waited patiently,
22:36trying to figure out
22:37a way to escape.
22:38Once he thought
22:39Jeffrey wasn't paying attention,
22:41he asked if he could
22:42use the restroom.
22:42He indeed wasn't
22:43paying any attention
22:44to him,
22:45so Tracy seized
22:46the opportunity.
22:47He jumped up,
22:48punched Jeffrey in the head
22:49and managed to figure out
22:50which lock to unlock
22:52the door
22:52and just bolted
22:53out of the door.
22:54But before he could leave,
22:55Jeffrey tried to stop him
22:57and Tracy kicked him
22:58in the nuts and ran.
22:59It was around 11.30pm.
23:00Tracy flagged down
23:01two police officers
23:02and asked them
23:03if they could just
23:04unlock the handcuff
23:05from his wrist.
23:06They both looked puzzled.
23:07Tracy explained to them
23:08what was going on.
23:09They escorted him back
23:10to Jeffrey's apartment building
23:12and told him to go up there
23:13and ask him
23:14to unlock the handcuffs.
23:15He got close
23:16to his apartment
23:16then noped out
23:17of going anywhere
23:18near that apartment
23:19without the police help.
23:21So they did.
23:21Jeffrey entered the door
23:22telling the cops
23:23that the key
23:24was in his nightstand
23:25in his bedroom.
23:26One of the police officers
23:27entered the apartment
23:28and opened up
23:29the nightstand drawer,
23:31noticed the photos
23:31of corpses
23:32and yelled
23:33from the bedroom,
23:34grab him.
23:34It was game over
23:35for Jeffrey.
23:36Little did those officers
23:37know that they were
23:38about to open up
23:39a Pandora's box
23:40of horror.
23:41While being pinned
23:42on the floor,
23:42he muttered,
23:43For what I did,
23:44I should be dead.
23:45Milwaukee Police Criminal
23:46Investigations Bureau
23:47conducted a more thorough
23:49search of apartment 213.
23:51Wearing hazmat suits,
23:52they found heads
23:53in the fridge
23:54and freezer,
23:55arm muscles
23:55wrapped in plastic
23:56in the deep freezer,
23:58several skulls,
23:59two preserved genitals,
24:00severed hands,
24:01a torso in the freezer,
24:03and body parts
24:04in that 55-gallon
24:05drum of acid.
24:0674 photos
24:07of dead bodies
24:08and there was blood
24:09on the floor
24:10in many places.
24:11It looked like something
24:12out of a horror movie.
24:13Police were just baffled
24:14as to what they were seeing.
24:16Back at the police station,
24:17Jeffrey confessed
24:18over a two-week period
24:19to every single murder
24:20he committed,
24:21from the one in Ohio,
24:23the one he did
24:23in the hotel,
24:24but he still claims
24:25he has no memory of,
24:26the three he did
24:27at his grandmother's house,
24:29and the rest that he did
24:30in that apartment.
24:31He even admitted
24:31to committing necrophilia
24:33with several bodies
24:34and with their organs.
24:35And the reason for all of this?
24:36It was a compulsion.
24:38It gave him
24:38sexual satisfaction.
24:40He also had a project in mind,
24:42an altar,
24:42a black table
24:43with seven skulls on it,
24:45incense burning,
24:46a lamp with blue lights,
24:47and the skeletons
24:48of two of his victims
24:49on either side,
24:50and a black armchair.
24:51He thought he could
24:52draw the energy
24:53from these skulls
24:54and skeletons
24:55to give him more power.
24:56If they would have caught him
24:57six months later,
24:59they would have found
24:59the altar in his living room.
25:01On July 25, 1991,
25:03Jeffrey was charged
25:04with four counts
25:05of first-degree murder.
25:06Then by August 22,
25:08he had been charged
25:08with a further 11 murders
25:11committed in Wisconsin.
25:12Police in Ohio
25:13found the bone fragments
25:14of his first victim,
25:16Stephen Hicks.
25:17In all,
25:17he was charged
25:18with 15 counts
25:19of first-degree murder.
25:20Then the separate trial
25:21in Ohio
25:22was found guilty.
25:23At a scheduled preliminary hearing
25:30on January 13, 1992,
25:32Jeffrey pled guilty
25:33but insane
25:34to 15 counts of murder.
25:36But this trial
25:36was going to be different.
25:37It wasn't about guilt
25:38or innocence.
25:39It was about whether
25:40Jeffrey was sane
25:41or insane
25:42at the time of the murders.
25:43The trial began
25:44January 30, 1992.
25:46The issue debated
25:47by opposing counsels
25:48at Dahmer's trial
25:49was to determine
25:50whether he suffered
25:51from either mental
25:53or a personality disorder.
25:55The prosecution
25:55claiming that
25:56any disorder
25:57did not deprive
25:58Jeffrey of the ability
25:59to appreciate
26:00the criminality
26:01of his conduct
26:02or to deprive him
26:03of the ability
26:04to resist his impulses.
26:06The defense
26:06arguing that
26:07Jeffrey suffered
26:08from a mental disease
26:09and was driven
26:10by obsession
26:11and impulses
26:12he was unable
26:12to control.
26:13Defense expert
26:14Fred Berlin
26:15testified that Dahmer
26:16was unable
26:17to conform
26:18his conduct
26:19at the time
26:19that he committed
26:20the crimes
26:21due to his paraphilia
26:22or more specifically
26:24necrophilia.
26:25The second expert
26:25witness for the defense
26:27was Dr. Judith Becker
26:28a professor
26:29of psychiatry
26:30and psychology.
26:31She also diagnosed
26:32Jeffrey as a necrophiliac
26:34although she added
26:36that Jeffrey
26:36had informed her
26:38he preferred
26:38comatose sexual partners
26:40to deceased ones
26:4175% of the time.
26:43The final defense expert
26:44to testify
26:45forensic psychiatrist
26:47Dr. Carl Wahlstrom
26:49diagnosed Jeffrey
26:50with necrophilia
26:51borderline personality disorder
26:53schizotypical personality disorder
26:55alcohol dependence
26:56and a psychotic disorder.
26:58Dr. Fred Falstel testified
27:00on behalf of the prosecution
27:02Falstel testified
27:03to his belief
27:04that Dahmer
27:05was without mental disease
27:06or defect
27:07at the time
27:07he committed the murders.
27:09He described Jeffrey
27:10as calculating
27:10and cunning individual
27:12able to differentiate
27:13between right and wrong
27:15with the ability
27:15to control his actions
27:17and whose lust
27:18overpowered his morals.
27:20The final expert
27:21for the prosecution
27:21was forensic psychiatrist
27:23Park Dietz.
27:24He testified
27:25that he did not believe
27:26Jeffrey had any form
27:27of mental disease
27:28or defect
27:28at the time
27:29that he committed the crimes.
27:30Stating
27:31Dahmer went to great lengths
27:32to be alone with his victims
27:34and to have no witnesses.
27:36He explained
27:36that there was ample evidence
27:38that Dahmer prepared
27:39in advance
27:40for each murder.
27:41Therefore,
27:41his crimes
27:42were not impulsive.
27:43Both sides argued
27:44their point
27:45and after closing arguments
27:46were finished
27:47it was up to the jury
27:48to decide Jeffrey's fate.
27:50Will he be deemed insane
27:51and placed in a mental institution
27:53or will he be deemed
27:54sane and sent to prison?
27:56On February 15th
27:57the jury came back
27:58with their verdict.
27:59Jeffrey Dahmer was sane
28:00at the time of the murders.
28:02With this
28:02he would receive
28:0315 life sentences
28:04plus 10 years
28:05for the first two counts.
28:07The victims' families
28:07were allowed to come up
28:08and make a statement.
28:09One of them
28:10was highly upset
28:11and tried to attack Jeffrey
28:13but was stopped
28:14by the guards.
28:15Jeffrey sat stone-faced
28:16the whole time
28:17and never flinched.
28:18This was the maximum punishment
28:19he could receive
28:20since Wisconsin
28:21abolished capital punishment
28:22in 1853.
28:24He pled guilty
28:25to the murder
28:25of Stephen Hicks
28:26in Ohio
28:27and was given
28:27his 16th life sentence
28:29on May 1st, 1992.
28:31He also did not
28:32wear his glasses
28:33on purpose
28:34because he didn't
28:35want to see
28:35the victims' families.
28:40After sentencing,
28:41Jeffrey was transferred
28:42to Columbia Correctional Institution.
28:44For his first year
28:45there,
28:46he was placed
28:47in solitary confinement
28:48for his own safety.
28:49He was transferred
28:50to a less secure unit
28:51with his permission.
28:53He was given the job
28:54of cleaning the prison toilets.
28:55Shortly after his confession
28:56in 1991,
28:58he requested to have
28:59a copy of the Bible
29:00and became a Bordingan Christian.
29:02On his father's urging,
29:03he also read
29:04creationist books
29:05from the Institute
29:06for Creation Research.
29:08On the same day
29:09John Wayne Gacy
29:10was being executed
29:11in Illinois,
29:12Jeffrey was baptized
29:13in the prison's whirlpool
29:14by Roy Radcliffe,
29:16a minister
29:16in the Church of Christ.
29:17He had weekly visits
29:18with Roy
29:19as well as his father
29:20would come to see him
29:22as often as possible.
29:23He also had regular contact
29:24with his mother
29:25who expressed
29:26that she worried
29:27about his safety
29:27to which he responded with,
29:29It doesn't matter, Mom.
29:31I don't care
29:31if something happens to me.
29:32One of the other prisoners
29:34tried to slash his throat
29:35with a razor
29:36attached to a toothbrush
29:37after chapel service
29:38was over,
29:39but he only received
29:40superficial wounds.
29:42He had his last interview
29:43with Stone Phillips
29:44from Dateline NBC.
29:45Jeffrey was calm
29:47and expressed
29:47that he takes full responsibility
29:49for what he did
29:50and that blaming someone else
29:52was just a cop-out.
29:53He also explained
29:54that his main motive
29:55was to take
29:56the best-looking guy
29:57and keep him
29:58for as long as possible,
29:59even if it's just
30:00a part of him.
30:01That's also why
30:02he committed cannibalism,
30:03to have them be
30:04a part of him.
30:05He swore up and down
30:06that it was never about hate.
30:08He hated no one.
30:09He was very polite
30:10and at one point
30:11hugged his dad
30:12who was sitting beside him.
30:13On the morning
30:14of November 28, 1994,
30:16Jeffrey was let out of his cell
30:17for his normal work detail.
30:19With him were fellow inmates
30:21Jesse Anderson
30:21and Christopher Scarver.
30:23They were left unsupervised
30:24for 20 minutes
30:25in the bathroom of the gym.
30:27When the guards came back
30:28around 8, 10 a.m.,
30:30they found both Jeffrey
30:31and Jesse on the floor
30:32with wounds to their heads.
30:34It appears they were beaten
30:35with a piece of gym equipment.
30:37They were rushed
30:37to the hospital,
30:39but Jeffrey was pronounced
30:40dead within an hour.
30:41Jesse died from his wounds
30:42two days later.
30:43Jesse was found
30:44to have defense wounds
30:45on his arms and hands,
30:47but Jeffrey had
30:47no defense wounds at all.
30:49He made no noise
30:50as he was being beaten.
30:52Christopher was already
30:53serving a life sentence
30:54for the murder
30:55he committed back in 1990.
30:57After beating both men
30:58to death,
30:58he went back to his cell.
31:00When they asked him
31:00why he did it,
31:01he said God told him
31:03to do it.
31:03Jesse Anderson
31:04and Jeffrey Dahmer
31:05are dead.
31:06Upon learning of his death,
31:07Jeffrey's mother,
31:08Joyce, responded angrily
31:09to the media.
31:10Now is everyone happy?
31:12Now that he's bludgeoned
31:12to death?
31:13Is that good enough
31:14for everyone?
31:15The reaction from
31:15the victim's families
31:16were mixed.
31:17Christopher Scarver
31:18received two more
31:19life sentences
31:20for the murder
31:20of Jesse Anderson
31:21and Jeffrey Dahmer.
31:23In his will,
31:23Jeffrey stated
31:24that he didn't want
31:25a funeral
31:26and he wanted
31:26to be cremated.
31:27His wishes were carried out
31:29and his ashes were split
31:30between his parents.
31:31He was 34 years old.
31:33On August 5, 1981,
31:41as the nature
31:42and scale
31:42of Dahmer's crimes
31:43initially came to light,
31:45a candlelight vigil
31:46to celebrate
31:47and heal
31:47the Milwaukee community
31:49was attended
31:50by more than
31:50400 people.
31:51Present at the vigil
31:52were community leaders,
31:54gay rights activists,
31:55and family members
31:56of several
31:57of Dahmer's victims.
31:58Organizers stated
31:59that the purpose
32:00of the vigil
32:01was to enable
32:02Milwaukeeans
32:03to share their feelings
32:04of pain and anger
32:05over what happened.
32:06The Oxford apartment building
32:08was demolished
32:08in November of 1992.
32:10It now sits
32:11as a vacant lot.
32:12Ideas of making it
32:13into a memorial park,
32:14a playground,
32:16or new housing
32:16never materialized.
32:18A few civil lawsuits
32:19were filed
32:19against the police
32:20and the Dahmer estate.
32:22Lionel retired
32:23and now lives
32:23with his second wife.
32:24In 1994,
32:26Lionel published a book,
32:27A Father's Story,
32:28and donated a portion
32:29of the proceeds
32:30from his book
32:31to the victim's families.
32:33Most of the families
32:33showed support
32:34for Lionel and Sherry,
32:36although three families
32:37subsequently sued Lionel,
32:38two for using their names
32:40in the book
32:41without obtaining
32:41prior consent,
32:42and a third family,
32:44that of Stephen Hicks,
32:45filing a wrongful death lawsuit
32:47against Lionel,
32:48Sherry,
32:49and former wife Joyce,
32:50citing parental negligence
32:52as the cause
32:53for the claim.
32:54In the book,
32:54Lionel blames Joyce
32:56for taking too many meds
32:57while pregnant
32:58and that she would have
32:59frequent seizures
33:00while pregnant
33:01with both children,
33:02which the doctor
33:03would have to make
33:03a house call
33:04to give her a shot
33:05of morphine.
33:06Joyce said that Lionel's
33:07claims were ridiculous
33:08and that she had
33:09a normal pregnancy
33:10with Jeffrey and David.
33:11Joyce died of cancer
33:12in November of 2000.
33:14Prior to her death,
33:15she attempted suicide
33:16on at least one occasion.
33:18Jeffrey's younger brother,
33:19David,
33:19changed his surname
33:20and lives in anonymity.
33:22Can't say I blame him.
33:23And trust me,
33:24the irony is not lost on me
33:25that Jeffrey died
33:26in the same manner
33:27as his first victim.
33:28I know that everybody
33:32and their dog
33:33has covered Jeffrey Dahmer,
33:35but I wanted to cover him
33:36because out of all
33:37the serial killers
33:38I've researched
33:38over the years,
33:39he's by far my favorite
33:40because he's just
33:41so fascinating.
33:42His thought process
33:43is so unusual
33:44and his obsessions
33:45were the strangest things
33:47I've ever heard of.
33:48And for him to talk
33:48about killing
33:49and having sex
33:50and eating some
33:51of his victims,
33:52like it's the most
33:53normal thing for him.
33:54Of course,
33:55the fact that he looks
33:56a normal,
33:57not really good looking,
33:58but just average,
33:59you can never tell
34:00from just a passing glance
34:01that he was capable
34:02of doing the things
34:04that he did.
34:04Even though a lot of people
34:05in our society
34:06find it odd
34:07that someone
34:07who is a fan
34:08of true crime
34:09would have a favorite
34:10serial killer,
34:11a lot of people do
34:12for one reason or another.
34:14I would love for those
34:15who have stuck around
34:15until the end.
