00:00Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge.
00:03To kick off Season 3, we are going to talk about one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, Owen Hart.
00:09The controversy surrounding his death, the investigation, and the lawsuits that followed left more questions than answers.
00:17Today marks the 25th anniversary of Owen's passing.
00:20But before we get into it, I would like to announce that I've started a second channel.
00:25It's totally different from the topics on this channel.
00:28It's called Cinnamon and Friends, named after my dog Cinnamon.
00:32It's all about dogs, cats, and other pets.
00:35The history and fun facts about different breeds.
00:39So if you're interested, check it out.
00:41Link is in the description box below.
00:44So let's get right into the life and death of Owen Hart.
00:47Owen James Hart was born on May 7, 1965, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Stu and Helen Hart, the twelfth and final child of the famous Hart wrestling family.
01:04Stu and Helen ran a wrestling promotion called Stampede Wrestling.
01:07Stu also ran a training school known as the Dungeon, which was one of the toughest schools ever, and produced a large number of famous wrestlers, such as Abdullah the Butcher, Superstar Billy Graham, Edge and Christian, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry, and Natalia, who is the daughter of Jim Neidhart and Elizabeth Hart, and the granddaughter of Stu and Helen Hart.
01:31She's also the only woman to be trained at the Dungeon.
01:35Wrestling was life in the Hart household.
01:38All the boys became wrestlers with varied degrees of success, trained by their father, of course, and the girls all married wrestlers.
01:45Owen was a natural, just like his brothers, but he was always trying to find a way out of the wrestling life.
01:51He started wrestling in high school.
01:53That's also where he met his future wife, Martha.
01:56He continued wrestling in college at University of Calgary, then trained in the Dungeon with his father, and also in Japan.
02:04His style of wrestling was very unique for the time.
02:07He would incorporate acrobatics into his movesets, which made for quick but fun matches.
02:12Between Stampede Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling, he won the tag team title in Stampede,
02:18then winning the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, becoming the first non-Japanese wrestler to win the title.
02:30Due to Owen's success in Stampede in New Japan, led him to signing with the WWF, now WWE, in summer of 1988.
02:39His big brother, Brett, was already an established star there, but instead of introducing him as Brett's little brother,
02:46he went with a superhero gimmick, the Blue Blazer, initially the Blue Angel, due to his high-flying style.
02:54The Blue Blazer made his pay-per-view debut at Survivor Series 88, teaming up with a traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series elimination match, which is Team 1.
03:04Even though he was exceptionally talented, he was stuck as a mid-card wrestler.
03:08After his loss to Mr. Perfect at WrestleMania V, Owen left the company.
03:14On July 1st, 1989, Owen married his high school sweetheart, Martha.
03:19He tried to find work outside of wrestling, but nothing really panned out for him.
03:23So, needing to provide for his wife, and with his dad's promotion being bought out by WWF and closing its doors in December 1988,
03:32it was time to get back into what he was good at.
03:35He toured the world, working for various promotions.
03:38In 1991, Owen lost the Blue Blazer mask in a mask-versus-mask match with Mexican wrestler L. Kenick.
03:46In the same year, he went to WCW and wrestled a handful of matches,
03:50but when Owen refused to move his family down to Atlanta, he decided to re-sign with WWF.
03:56He teamed up with his real-life brother-in-law, Jim Neidhart, to form the new foundation.
04:01Jim eventually left, so Owen teamed up with Coco Beware to form the tag team High Energy, but that too was short-lived.
04:09What Owen is most remembered for is his feud with his brother, Brett.
04:14Acting as a jealous little brother, it all came to a head at WrestleMania X in 1994.
04:20Brett vs. Owen.
04:21Brother vs. Brother was the best match of the night.
04:24Owen won, which helped elevate his career.
04:27He went on to win the King of the Ring Tournament.
04:30He dropped the Rocket nickname and took on the nickname, The King of Hearts.
04:35Things were looking up more and more for Owen.
04:37He partnered up with Yokozuna to win the WWF Tag Team Titles twice.
04:43He won two Slammy Awards in 1996.
04:46He partnered up with his brother-in-law, the British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith, to win the tag titles again.
04:51In 1997, Owen won the WWF Intercontinental title, Defeating the Rock.
04:58At the same time, he was part of the Hart Foundation faction, with his brother Brett, British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart, and Brian Pillman.
05:06This was a unique faction, as they were heels, or bad guys in America, and faces, or good guys, in Canada.
05:13They were a pretty dominant faction, holding almost all the gold.
05:17But things started to go downhill.
05:19Owen and Bulldog lost the tag titles, then Owen lost the Intercontinental title to Stone Cold Steve Austin.
05:26During that match, a botch-sitting piledriver broke Austin's neck.
05:30So even though he managed to win with a quick pinfall, he had to vacate the title.
05:35Owen won the title back after competing in a tournament.
05:38Due to the results of the 1997 Survivor Series main event, known as the Montreal Screwjob,
05:44where Brett, who was the WWF Champion at the time, and was leaving for WCW, was screwed over to get the title off of him.
05:53Once that incident happened, the WWF gave quick releases to Bulldog and Neidhart to jump over to WCW.
06:00With the passing of Brian Pillman a month prior, meant that Owen was the last member of the Hart Foundation left in the WWF.
06:07He transformed his character to be more edgy and called himself the Blackheart and joined the Nation of Domination.
06:15Eventually that faction was slowly dissolved.
06:18After a match in which Owen accidentally injured Dan Severn, Owen seemingly quit the WWF.
06:24This is when the Blue Blazer character came back.
06:27The joke was to deny that Owen and Blue Blazer were one and the same.
06:31This angle seemed to work.
06:33A superhero spoof who despises the Attitude Era of the WWF.
06:38He would mock Hulk Hogan's line,
06:40Always take your vitamins, say your prayers, and drink your milk.
06:44He then teamed up with Jeff Jarrett.
06:46During this time, the creative team, led by Vince Russo,
06:50kept pitching ideas to Owen about having an on-screen affair with Debra.
06:55But with each dirty storyline, Owen said no.
06:58He didn't like the direction of where the WWF was going during the Attitude Era.
07:03After all, he's a family man, and didn't want everyone to think he was cheating on his wife.
07:08But with each time he said no, he knew eventually they were going to get rid of him.
07:13At least with the Blue Blazer revival, he could avoid any dirty storylines and work more of a comedy act,
07:19which was better than going down a dirty path.
07:21On May 10, 1999, Owen faced a new up-and-comer in a dark match, which Owen won.
07:29He was so impressed with the young man that backstage,
07:32he told the others that this guy is going to be a future champion.
07:35That young man was Kurt Angle, who went on to have an impressive career.
07:40Sadly, no footage of this match was ever made public, except for this photo.
07:44Sometime before the pay-per-view, Over the Edge, Vince Rousseau, head of creative, got a call from a rigging company.
07:57I'm not going to say which one.
07:59To offer their services for any stunts.
08:02Vince looked at the card for the up-and-coming pay-per-view and noticed Owen's name.
08:07He suggested to have Owen descend from the rafters and have a superhero-like entrance,
08:12but he wanted Owen to have a quick-release mechanism so that when Owen was close enough to the ring,
08:19he would release himself and fall flat on his face, which Vince thought would be funny.
08:24This isn't the first time that Owen has done this stunt,
08:28but it was going to be a different team and a different setup.
08:31When approached, Owen suggested that he would make his entrance first,
08:36because if he had to get out of a normal harness, the godfather would pummel him.
08:40Normally, in the wrestling world, if a title is changing hands, the champion comes out first.
08:48His wife Martha was worried and asked a lot of questions when the WWF called
08:52to get Owen's measurements for the vest he was going to be using for this stunt.
08:58The lady on the phone reassured her that they have the top riggers from LA coming in for this event.
09:04Martha thought that this billion-dollar company was going to hire the best in the business
09:09and would never put Owen's life in danger, but they didn't.
09:14Unlike last time, when a different rigging company who had worked with Owen and Shawn Michaels,
09:20they used a locking carabiner system, which was a safe way to repel.
09:24On May 22, 1999, the day before the pay-per-view,
09:30Owen leaves for the airport and he's rushing out the door.
09:34He then stops everything and kisses Martha.
09:37He leaves with his son, Oge, and picks up Martha's mother
09:40so that they can take the car home once Owen is dropped off at the airport, which is normal.
09:46But this time was different.
09:48Before Owen leaves, he tells his son,
09:51It was almost like Owen knew something was going to happen to him.
10:01On May 23, 1999, at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri,
10:07stunt rigger Bobby Talbert told Owen that they need to do a number of dry runs
10:12because this was a different setup than last time.
10:14They tested the vest and rigging system first
10:18with a sandbag that weighed about the same as Owen and it was fine.
10:23He didn't feel comfortable doing this stunt,
10:25so he declined the dry run because he had done it before, so no big deal.
10:30They finally convinced him to practice at least one time
10:33because it was a different setup.
10:35He went through the dry run at around 3 p.m.
10:38He was told not to touch the release cord until he got close to the ground.
10:43The dry run was successful.
10:46Owen's mood and behavior was different on this day.
10:49He wasn't his normal, jokey, playful self.
10:52He was tense, stressed, and angry for having to go through with his stunt.
10:57He was talking with his friend Jim Ross, or J.R., who works the commentary desk.
11:03J.R. said, better you than me.
11:05I don't like heights.
11:07Owen replied, me neither.
11:09The pay-per-view over the edge was starting.
11:12His match with the Godfather was the third match on the card,
11:15so he had a bit of time.
11:17He was booked to win the Intercontinental title for the third time.
11:21He bumped into wrestling legend Harley Race,
11:24who told him, be careful that rope doesn't break.
11:27With coveralls on and a ball cap so no one would notice him,
11:31he headed to section 221,
11:34climbed the rickety wooden ladder to the catwalk above.
11:38While the pay-per-view was going on,
11:41he quickly got changed into his costume,
11:43and the riggers suited him up,
11:45and attached a 100-foot length of rope to the back of the vest.
11:50They taped the quick-release cord to his vest.
11:53Noticing that he needed to adjust his cape,
11:55otherwise it was going to strangle him,
11:57he fixed it and took his cue to repel.
12:00While descending, at 78 feet,
12:04the quick-release mechanism triggered,
12:06and with no backup rope, he fell.
12:09On his way down, he noticed the referee close to where he was going to land,
12:13and screamed to get out of the way.
12:16He fell chest-first onto the top rope,
12:18landing in the corner of the ring,
12:20almost a foot away from the turnbuckle.
12:23He tried to sit up, but laid back down.
12:25Some witnesses say that the sound was so loud,
12:29they thought a speaker blew.
12:31The arena was darkened because the video package was playing,
12:35so no one really knew what happened.
12:37Referee Jimmy Corderas, who was going to rep the match,
12:41was helping to clean up from the last match,
12:43and was making his way to where Owen would land.
12:46He was brushed by Owen's foot,
12:48and the rope sprang up so hard that it jammed his fingers.
12:52J.R. and Jerry the King Lawler noticed what happened and signaled for help.
12:57Jerry sprang from his seat to check on Owen.
13:00Paramedics, who were already on standby,
13:03quickly tended to Owen.
13:05His second video package played after J.R. said,
13:08we got big problems out here.
13:10After the video package,
13:12the cameras were pointed towards the crowd,
13:14and then to J.R.,
13:16who was trying to fill time on the air explaining what happened,
13:20and trying to articulate that this wasn't part of a storyline.
13:24This is what he said while the EMTs were tending to Owen.
13:28Quote,
13:29Owen Hart was scheduled to descend from the top of the Kemper Arena
13:32in a superhero-like entrance in his Blue Blazer character.
13:36Something has gone terribly wrong with the equipment
13:39that Owen Hart was being lowered down to the ring.
13:42The paramedics are working on Owen Hart.
13:44Let me tell you,
13:45we are going to have,
13:47and we have already had some entertaining things.
13:49This is not part of the show.
13:51I don't know any better way to put this.
13:53This is not a wrestling angle.
13:55This is real life.
13:57Owen Hart,
13:57with the equipment malfunctioning,
13:59is being attended to right now by a host of EMTs.
14:03We are not going to put this on television.
14:05This is not a sensationalistic attempt to leave a mark here on this event.
14:10Again, we don't know what malfunctioned.
14:13Obviously, something in the apparatus.
14:15We assume that's all we are doing is assuming that that went wrong.
14:19Unless Owen inadvertently released himself before he was near the ring.
14:24So again, we will have our mixed tag team matchup.
14:27We will have the rest of this broadcast.
14:28But the bigger issue now is that a human being, Owen Hart,
14:33has been terribly injured here on this live broadcast.
14:37So again, there have already been so many things that have happened here.
14:42But right now, nothing is more important than the health and welfare of not only a great athlete,
14:47but a very unique and a good human being who is now being attended to in the ring.
14:53I can only reiterate the best way that I know how.
14:56And if I'm not being as articulate as I would like to be,
14:59I hope that you can understand that this is not, I repeat, this is not a wrestling angle.
15:05This is not part of the storyline.
15:07This was a terribly tragic situation, unquote.
15:11Jerry came back to the commentary desk, looking white as a sheet and speechless.
15:16Quote,
15:16I was reiterating to the fans that this is not part of the show.
15:20We're here to entertain and have fun, but this is neither, unquote.
15:24Jerry replied nervously in a shaken voice.
15:27No, it's a, it doesn't look good at all.
15:31No one at home or at the arena knew what happened.
15:33When the EMTs cut off his mask, his face was blue.
15:38They got him out of the ring and onto a stretcher.
15:41As he was being rushed to the ambulance,
15:43the stretcher passed his friend and tag team partner, Jeff Jarrett and Deborah,
15:48who were shooting a promo.
15:49He tried to regain his composure and spoke into the camera that he is praying for Owen,
15:54then gets in the character.
15:57Owen was rushed to the Truman Medical Center.
15:59Despite all efforts,
16:00Owen Hart died from a torn aorta from blunt force trauma from the fall.
16:05He was 34 years old.
16:08In what was one of the most controversial decisions,
16:11Vince McMahon decided to go on with the pay-per-view,
16:14when clearly no one wanted to be there anymore.
16:18The other wrestlers and staff that were close to Owen
16:20wanted to be there for their friend.
16:23No one really cared about the pay-per-view,
16:25and a lot of wrestlers and commentary
16:27were just on autopilot at that point.
16:31It was like the rest of the pay-per-view had a dark cloud hanging over it,
16:35as everyone was waiting for an update on Owen.
16:38Two-thirds of the way through the event,
16:40after the elimination tag match,
16:43J.R. finally got an update,
16:45and with only 10 seconds of preparation,
16:47he announced,
16:48The arena went silent.
17:11The pay-per-view finished its final matches.
17:14That Monday night on Raw,
17:16everyone paid tribute to Owen
17:18on a special called Raw is Owen.
17:21The wrestlers decided whether or not they wanted to wrestle or not.
17:24Some did, some didn't.
17:26Stone Cold Steve Austin,
17:28known for his drinking beer in the ring,
17:31left one can of beer for Owen
17:32in the middle of the ring.
17:34The pay-per-view named Over the Edge
17:43was never used again,
17:45and the DVDs were never sold of that event.
17:48To anyone wondering if there's footage of Owen's fall,
17:50the answer is yes.
17:52But it is kept under lock and key
17:54in the WWE vault,
17:56with a label that reads,
17:57Never to Destroy, View, or Duplicate.
18:00It has never leaked online,
18:02and to be honest with you,
18:03I don't want to see it.
18:05On May 31st, 1999,
18:07Owen's funeral was held.
18:09Thousands of people attended,
18:11but only close family and friends
18:13were able to attend inside.
18:15He left behind his wife Martha,
18:17his son Oge, age 7,
18:19and his daughter Athena, age 3.
18:22He was buried at Queen's Park Cemetery in Calgary.
18:26On the same day as his funeral,
18:27a pre-taped episode of Raw aired.
18:30During that show,
18:31Jeff Jarrett defeated the Godfather
18:33to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship,
18:36the title Owen was booked to win
18:38for the third time at Over the Edge.
18:40Celebrating his victory,
18:42Jeff screamed Owen's name.
18:44After the funeral,
18:45Martha wanted answers,
18:47and for Vince McMahon to take accountability
18:49for his actions.
18:51So she filed a wrongful death suit
18:52that lasted about a year and a half.
18:55She was suing him in Kansas City,
18:57but he wanted a lawsuit to go to Connecticut.
19:00She investigated the rigging company
19:02and the equipment used.
19:04The vest was not made for stunt use
19:06and it even said so on the warning label.
19:09But the most messed up part
19:10is when she saw the clip.
19:12It was tiny.
19:14This clip was no bigger than 6 inches in length.
19:17Its purpose was to be used on sailboats.
19:19With just 6 pounds of pressure,
19:21it releases with ease.
19:22This tiny clip was supposed to support
19:25the weight of a 220-pound man.
19:28It was like hooking him up to a paper clip.
19:30Martha, Oge, and Athena
19:32went to the Kemper Arena,
19:35climbed up the ladder,
19:36and went to the spot where Owen had fell from
19:38and looked down.
19:39It was frightening.
19:40The ring itself had a number of blood stains on it
19:44and a notable dent from the impact.
19:46The blood was tested
19:47and most of it was Owen's.
19:50But one large stain that was noticeable
19:51during the pay-per-view
19:52was not real blood.
19:54It was fake blood
19:55that was used during Sunday Night Heat,
19:58which acts as a pre-show
19:59to get people to buy the pay-per-view.
20:02They had a few matches during that hour.
20:04After the Hardy Boys vs. Goldust
20:06and the blue meanie tag match,
20:08the brood did one of their infamous bloodbaths,
20:11where they dumped fake blood
20:12on the Hardys and Michael Hayes.
20:14When Matt Hardy leaned his arm
20:16on the ring mat to get up,
20:18that's when it happened.
20:19Because the pay-per-view
20:20wasn't stopped immediately
20:21after Owen's fall,
20:23the crime scene was tainted badly.
20:25Having four or five matches will do that.
20:28So Martha vowed to get justice for her husband.
20:31Half of the Hart family was for her doing this,
20:33and the other half was against it.
20:35But in the end, she settled for $18 million.
20:38Later on, in 2010,
20:41Martha filed a lawsuit against WWE
20:43over its use of Owen's name and likeness,
20:46as well as personal photos of Owen's family
20:48and the WWE Heart and Soul DVD,
20:52as well as the failure to make royalty payments.
20:55The matter was scheduled to go to trial
20:57in June 2013,
20:59but a settlement was reached
21:00in April 2013
21:02for an undisclosed amount.
21:04So basically,
21:05Owen was scrubbed from history.
21:07All of his matches,
21:08everything.
21:09Which I feel is not fair to his fans like me.
21:12I have to hunt for every single bit of footage online,
21:15including Over the Edge,
21:17which is a VHS copy
21:18that someone had the sense to record at home.
21:22Luckily, I have it in my library,
21:24and it is out there,
21:25but you really have to search for it.
21:27Life for Martha,
21:29Oge,
21:29and Athena moved on.
21:31The dream house that was built
21:32and wasn't complete when Owen passed
21:34was finally completed.
21:36Martha became a child psychologist,
21:38Oge grew up to become a lawyer,
21:40and Athena completed a degree in journalism.
21:43The money from the settlement
21:44was used to establish
21:46the Owen Hart Foundation,
21:47which provides college scholarships
21:49for children in need,
21:51as well as housing for low-income families.
21:54Martha remained friends
21:55with only Keith,
21:56Wayne,
21:57and Bret Hart
21:57out of Owen's 10 living siblings,
22:00but none of them were in the episode
22:02of Vice's Dark Side of the Ring.
22:04After that episode aired,
22:06it's finally clear to everyone
22:07that Owen is never going to be
22:09in the WWE Hall of Fame,
22:11because his widow and kids
22:13don't want him to be celebrated
22:15by the company
22:16that took him away from them.
22:18Martha has begun to allow
22:19other wrestling companies
22:20to celebrate her husband
22:22and his accomplishments.
22:24On September 20, 2021,
22:26All Elite Wrestling
22:27announced the Owen Hart Cup Tournament
22:31in partnership
22:32with the Owen Hart Foundation,
22:34wherein the winner
22:35will receive a trophy
22:36called The Owen.
22:38The company also announced
22:39production and distribution
22:41of original Owen Hart merchandise,
22:44and Owen's character
22:45is in the AEW console game
22:47AEW Fight Forever,
22:50which I'm sure to Vince,
22:51this was a big fat up yours
22:53from Martha.
22:54WWE wrestler Kevin Owens
22:56named his son after Owen
22:58and incorporated the name
23:00into his own ring name
23:01as a tribute to the both of them.
23:03Kevin also refuses to compete
23:05for the Intercontinental title again
23:07because he held the title
23:09the same number of days as Owen.
23:12Sadly, the only Hart family member
23:14that is currently wrestling
23:15is Natalya.
23:17She is still sporting
23:18the black and pink color theme
23:20and uses the sharpshooter
23:21as her signature submission hold.
23:24In 2024,
23:25Sting asked Martha
23:26for permission
23:27to perform the stunt
23:28that Owen was supposed to do
23:30as part of his farewell tour.
23:32She said yes,
23:33and he performed the stunt successfully.
23:35But I've noticed
23:37a bit of a change.
23:38WWE has aired
23:39a video package
23:40to promote
23:41the King and Queen
23:42of the Ring tournament.
23:43The finals will be
23:44on PLE
23:45on May 25th of this year.
23:48They used three pieces
23:49of footage of Owen
23:50when he won
23:5130 years ago.
23:52And some of his matches
23:54are on WWE's
23:55YouTube channel as well.
23:57So maybe because
23:58Vince got booted
23:59from his own company,
24:00that maybe someone
24:01worked a deal with Martha.
24:02So who knows
24:03what the future holds.
24:05Owen was a pioneer
24:06for the high-flyer style
24:07of wrestling,
24:08which shaped the wrestling world
24:10for the better.
24:11If he hadn't have gone through
24:13with this stunt,
24:14he would have had
24:14a resurgence to his career.
24:16He would have had matches
24:17with some of the best wrestlers,
24:19such as Chris Jericho,
24:21Eddie Guerrero,
24:22Chris Benoit,
24:23and even had further matches
24:24with Kurt Angle.
24:26But because of carelessness,
24:27it cost him everything.
24:29Owen will dearly be missed.
24:35Honestly,
24:36this is one of the most
24:37heartbreaking cases.
24:38And I am so mad at both
24:40Vince Russo and Vince McMahon.
24:42Russo for trying to make
24:43things more real
24:44and not seeing the risk
24:46for what they are.
24:47But at the end of the day,
24:49the buck stops with
24:49Vince McMahon.
24:51He's being shamed right now
24:52for other evil deeds,
24:54and he is being disgraced
24:55by the court of public opinion.
24:57If he would have just
24:58stopped the damn
24:59pay-per-view after Owen fell,
25:00made an announcement
25:01that the pay-per-view
25:02was canceled
25:03and everyone is going
25:04to get a refund,
25:06that would have shown
25:06that he cared.
25:07But he scraped off Owen
25:08like a piece of meat
25:09and let the show go on.
25:11Just shows how little
25:12he cares for those
25:13that risk everything
25:14for his company.
25:16It was foolish,
25:17this stunt should have
25:18never happened,
25:18and Owen should have
25:19been retired by now,
25:21enjoying his family
25:22and his legacy.
25:23But instead,
25:24he has a tombstone
25:25with his name on it.
25:27Fans like me
25:27were robbed of a great wrestler
25:29and a great human being.
25:31No one ever had
25:32a negative thing
25:32to say about him.
25:34And that to me
25:34speaks volumes.
25:36He saved his money
25:37and barely ever
25:38spent a dime on the road
25:39because he wanted
25:40to retire in a couple of years.
25:42It's a shame
25:43that he never got his wish.
25:45I hope you found
25:46this video interesting.
25:47It was really difficult
25:48to create this.
25:49Show some love
25:50by smashing that like button.
25:52It helps the channel
25:53to fight against
25:54the YouTube algorithm.
25:55They've been doing me dirty
25:56and I don't think
25:57it will ever stop.
25:59Subscribe if you're new
