US will resume testing nuclear weapons for first time in 30 years, Trump says

Trump said changes were necessary because other countries were testing their weapons. Russia has claimed it has recently conducted multiple nuclear arms tests.

00:00US President Donald Trump has announced that the US will resume testing nuclear weapons
00:04for the first time in three decades.
00:06Trump said the move was necessary and that testing would be on equal basis with Russia
00:10and China.
00:12In a post on True Social, he said, because of other countries' testing programs, I have
00:17instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons.
00:21He added that the process will begin immediately.
00:24White House and Pentagon officials did not offer immediate clarity about the announcement.
00:29Trump's decision comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin this week announced that Moscow
00:33tested a new atomic-powered and nuclear-capable underwater drone and a new cruise missile.
00:39Putin did not announce any tests of Russia's nuclear weapons, the last test of which occurred
00:44in 1990.
00:46North Korea also recently announced its own missile testing.
00:49In 2023, Putin signed a bill revoking Russia's ratification of the Global Nuclear Test Ban.
00:55The 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the CTBT, prohibits all nuclear explosions worldwide,
01:03but never was ratified by the US Senate.
01:06Russia said in 2023 it would only resume tests of its nuclear weapons if Washington did it first.
