00:00Putin Orders Review of Nuclear Test Plans After Trump Signals U.S. May Resume Atomic Explosions
00:05On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin ordered proposals on possibly resuming nuclear tests,
00:11responding to Donald Trump's suggestion the U.S. could restart atomic testing.
00:16According to the Associated Press, at a meeting with his Security Council,
00:20Putin repeated that Moscow would only resume testing if Washington does so first.
00:25On October 30, Trump suggested the U.S. could resume nuclear testing for the first time in more than 30 years,
00:31on an equal basis with Russia and China.
00:34U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright later said any new tests would not involve nuclear explosions.
00:40Trump made his remarks on social media while in South Korea,
00:44days after Putin announced successful tests of a nuclear-powered cruise missile and underwater drone.
00:49Putin's comments were widely seen as a signal of Russia's resolve amid tensions over Ukraine.
00:56The U.S. still tests nuclear-capable weapons, but hasn't detonated one since 1992.
01:01Washington and Moscow observed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty without ratifying it.
01:06Last year, Putin revoked Russia's ratification of the treaty, saying it was needed to keep pace with the U.S.
01:12Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belosov warned that U.S. modernization and test talk
01:17significantly increased the level of military threats to Russia.
01:21He urged preparations at the Arctic Novaya Zemlya site, last used for a Soviet nuclear detonation in 1990.
01:28General Valery Gerasimov backed quick action.
01:31If we don't take appropriate measures now, we will miss the time and opportunity to respond promptly to the U.S. actions,
01:37Gerasimov said.
01:39Putin ordered more information and coordinated proposals on the possible start of work on preparations for nuclear weapons tests.
01:46Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin ordered analysis, not an immediate start to preparations.
01:53Security Council Deputy Dmitry Medvedev said Trump's remarks could not be ignored.
01:57No one knows what Trump meant about nuclear testing.
02:01Medvedev wrote on X.
02:03But he's the President of the United States.
02:06And the consequences of such words are inescapable.
02:09Russia will be forced to assess the expediency of conducting full-fledged nuclear tests itself.
