00:00getting into jt's return i mean for me uh and i wrote about this after watching him field
00:09questions from vancouver media it was so fascinating for me to see him in this sort of
00:13setting because ever since he was named captain and ever since really he's rejoined the rangers
00:20he's just been so dead fast and everything he says and everything he does he's so he's a force
00:28of nature in so many different ways both on on the ice and off the ice truly um but you could see
00:34how conflicted he was ahead of this anticipated return and knowing that the emotions were coming
00:43already feeling the emotions he said just touching down on the tarmac he was feeling some type of way
00:49about being back back in vancouver so he was really grappling with what a big night it was for him and
00:56his family but also his responsibilities as rangers captain to not cause any distractions and want the
01:03team to be focused so he was it was like the two sides of this coin were going back and forth during
01:09this scrum and it was really fascinating to see that for me and i thought he handled it so well
01:14he was raw and honest as he always as he always is and has and as he has been since he joined the
01:20rangers again um but yeah he i also spoke with with him earlier in the season and we naturally kind
01:28of touched on uh his time in vancouver and i really feel like he has learned so much and has matured so
01:36much especially since his first time in new york and he told me that vancouver is really where he put it
01:42all together as a as an nhler and like thought to himself you know i want to learn from all my
01:49mistakes and i you know want to get it right this time and he said that the opportunity he got there
01:54in vancouver playing in all situations is one that you dream about your whole career so uh you could
02:00really tell how much it meant to him and you said you were going back and forth with him after the game
02:05uh what did he have to say well i just congratulated him because i know like you said he went he was he was an
02:12emerging player a useful very good player in new york he went to tampa and they were sort of loaded
02:18up front he was playing on the fourth line getting 45 points a year which is like you know i always was
02:26proud of the production that i could get out of those minutes when i would get 25 points in a season or
02:36if i could get you know 15 goals i was just you know that was the role so if you could squeeze
02:41something out of it and he was doing obviously because his ceiling and where he is from a talent
02:46standpoint is so high so he goes and makes himself not just a complete player but a superstar he was a
02:54superstar 99 point season over 100 point season you know and a big big part of like what team usa is
03:00going to be doing and i think you know his personality everybody has different personality
03:07traits and his personality is perfectly suited as a leader of men in a sport like hockey in the nhl
03:15it's not golf it's not where you know kids are there and microphones you're you go into the arena the
03:23door shuts there's glass on the door that goes up so you can keep things in and you can keep things out
03:29and there's a reason for it it's a violent abrasive emotionally charged up game i would want that
03:36as much as you can because the issues i ran into throughout the course of the season were games
03:43where i couldn't bring that where i didn't have a short wick where i didn't have a quick fuse and i
03:50couldn't get emotionally invested it's not for everybody and i think i might have told this story
03:54before but rick bonus was our coach in tampa and he he sat down i was sitting next to victor headman
04:00he sat down next to victor and he pointed at him and said listen you can't get mad you need to let
04:05things go and just play your game because when you get mad you know it's not your best performance
04:10and then he looked at me not you you make sure you get mad because you play better when you're mad
04:18victor you don't and then victor started getting mad he's like well how come i can't get mad i'm like
04:22just don't just don't get victor he's making a joke he doesn't really care about me he's a d coach
04:27and you're a norse dean let's but that it was so funny because like some guys yeah you can rattle
04:33them and it changes they play for me i needed it and he needs it too and a lot of guys do but
04:39when there's when there's too much of one thing on a team it could go it could go a number of
04:46ways but usually it's not great you need those different personalities i think just him being here
04:52i look at big picture things i look at what it's what mika's been doing this year and that's
04:56probably coming from mika but i don't think jt hurts at all he's been playing really really well
05:01he could easily have eight or nine goals yeah eating really well he's competing and defensively
05:07last night he put on a clinic so i really i like the really important guys on this team what they
05:13were doing particularly last night it's a really good sign
05:15you
