00:00Welcome to the video from the Auto Magazine Tuning Blog on the topic of 2024.
00:05Lexus GX5 Premium.
00:07A luxurious off-road vehicle that now impresses not only off-road, but also on the road.
00:14After many years of virtually unchanged construction,
00:17the GX is finally receiving a comprehensive update that has been brought up to date both visually and technically.
00:22The third generation of this SUV is based on the robust GAF platform of the Lexus LX600 and,
00:30with six available trim levels, Premium, Premium Plus, Luxury, Luxury Plus,
00:35Overtrail, and Overtrail Plus, offers significantly more variety than before.
00:42The Premium version proves to be a particularly interesting mix of comfort and off-road capability,
00:47without straying into an expensive niche or sacrificing essential features.
00:52The premium variant of the new GX505 is powered by a 3.4-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine
01:01that delivers 349 horsepower and a maximum torque of around 650 Newton-M.
01:09Power is distributed to all four wheels via a standard 10-speed automatic transmission.
01:15Traction is provided by a full-time all-wheel drive system with a torsion-centered differential,
01:19which distributes drive power evenly between the front and rear axles.
01:24The electronic stability and traction control systems can be deactivated as needed,
01:29which is particularly advantageous for off-road use.
01:33The new GX Premium offers a 26 degrees approach angle,
01:37a 23 degrees breakover angle, and a 23 degrees departure angle.
01:41Ground clearance is approximately 22 centimeters,
01:47and the SUV can easily negotiate water crossings of up to 70 centimeters.
01:53In terms of dimensions, the new GX is around 9 centimeters wider than its predecessor.
01:58This increases driving stability both on and off-road.
02:04For improved off-road performance,
02:07the front overhang has also been shortened by almost 2 centimeters.
02:10The premium version does not have adaptive dampers or electronically decoupled anti-roll bars,
02:18as found in the higher-end Overale and Overale Plus trim levels.
02:23Nevertheless, it offers solid chassis tuning,
02:26striking a good balance between comfort and control.
02:29Inside, Lexus focuses on modern technology and a high level of comfort.
02:33A 14-inch touchscreen, integrated deep into the dashboard,
02:38forms the centerpiece of the infotainment system.
02:41The control unit resembles a horizontal tablet,
02:44yet blends harmoniously into the design.
02:49A small but practical detail is the redesigned dashboard
02:52with a compartment for small items or a smartphone.
02:57The digital instrument cluster measures 12.3 inches,
03:00but can be difficult to see in strong sunlight or from the passenger seat.
03:05The optional head-up display for around €850 is recommended for this.
03:11The GX Premium comes standard with heated and ventilated front seats.
03:17For a moderate surcharge of around €300,
03:20you can add a cold storage package with a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel,
03:24headlight cleaning system, windshield washer, and rapid interior heating.
03:30The second-row seats are also heated and ventilated,
03:33but only standard on the higher Premium Plus trim level.
03:37In terms of handling, the GX Premium is confident.
03:41The powerful V6 engine remains in the background.
03:44The interior is well insulated against noise.
03:47The vehicle accelerates to 6.30 kmh
03:50and completes the quarter-mile in 40.7 seconds,
03:54reaching a top speed of around 153 kmh.
03:57The transmission impresses with quick, barely noticeable gear changes.
04:03The ride is comfortable overall.
04:07The softly-tuned suspension and rigid frame construction
04:10are somewhat reminiscent of a land yacht, yet still manageable.
04:13The newly designed double wishbone front axle,
04:19combined with the four-link rear axle,
04:21noticeably improves handling compared to the older model.
04:26The suspension remains soft, but cornering is surprisingly neutral.
04:30The maximum towing capacity of around 4,100 kg is also impressive.
04:38In our tests, this was not fully utilized,
04:41but the braking performance suggests sufficient reserves.
04:45The GX comes to a standstill from 100 kmh in around 35 meters,
04:50with some variation depending on driving conditions.
04:52The dynamics on the handling course were mixed, but manageable.
04:58The SUV achieved a time of 28.4 seconds there
05:01with an average of 0.6 grime and 0.7 on the skid pad.
05:08The electric steering provides sufficient feedback
05:10to maneuver the vehicle safely and precisely.
05:13An important update concerns the rear of the vehicle.
05:18Lexus has dispensed with the side-opening rear door on the new model,
05:22opting instead for a top-hinged tailgate.
05:25This decision should be particularly advantageous in tight parking spaces.
05:30The separately-opening rear window remains.
05:34The trunk offers a maximum capacity of 2,178 liters
05:38with the seats folded down.
05:40Behind the second row,
05:41it is approximately 1,138 liters,
05:44behind the third row just under 300 liters,
05:46which is hardly usable in practice.
05:49This makes the GX not the ideal seven-seater for everyday use.
05:53However, the third row of seats is sufficient for occasional rides.
05:58With a starting price of around €59,000,
06:01the GX Premium is a relatively affordable entry
06:04into the world of luxury SUVs.
06:08Our test vehicle,
06:09with some useful extras like a head-up display,
06:12winter package,
06:13luggage compartment light,
06:14and traffic jam assist,
06:15cost around €61,000.
06:19Given the features and capabilities offered,
06:21this seems like a reasonable price.
06:26The clear design language,
06:28solid technology,
06:29and versatility make the GX Premium
06:31an interesting overall package
06:32for buyers who don't insist on maximum luxury
06:35or off-road capability,
06:36but still want to benefit from both.
