00:05This is how hard Trump's tariffs are hitting VW, BMW, and Mercedes.

00:18US President Donald Trump has made good on his promises

00:21and is now imposing tariffs of 25% on car imports to the United States.

00:26This is a devastating blow for the German automobile groups Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes,

00:33because no other electric vehicle country exports as many vehicles to the USA as Germany.

00:38This means that the three major manufacturers are losing one of their most important growth markets,

00:43which represents an additional burden given the already difficult situation on the global market.

00:48What's particularly bitter is that important car parts are also set to be subject to the

00:53same tariff rate for May 3rd at the latest, according to the official Journal of the United States.

01:00The management consultancy Deloitte has calculated what consequences these tariffs could have.

01:06A tariff of just 15% would have caused German car exports to the USA to collapse by around,

01:12at 30%, it would be around a third.

01:16Now, at 25%, correspondingly severe losses are expected.

01:20Harold Professor, head of the automotive sector at Deloitte,

01:26emphasizes that high trade barriers with the world's largest economy

01:29are putting additional pressure on the German automotive industry.

01:34The industry is already struggling with declining profits in Europe and China,

01:38staff cuts, and the threat of factory closures.

01:42Analysts at the US research firm Bernstein are even more explicit.

01:45They estimate the additional net costs for Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes

01:51as a result of Trump's measures at around 11 billion euros.

01:55If the new tariff regulations remain in place for a longer period,

01:59profit margins could also shrink considerably.

02:02Many executives in the boardrooms of the manufacturers are holding back from making public statements,

02:08not least for fear of further retaliation from the US government.

02:11Passing the tariffs on to customers through price increases could quickly provoke new conflicts with Trump.

02:21A decision-maker at one of the three companies has already stated in advance

02:25that they must wait and be very cautious.
