00:14The BMW X1, the best-selling X model in Germany since its debut in 2009, has been synonymous with the X models from Munich and has sold over 2.7 million units worldwide as a compact SUV.
00:26With the third generation, which was introduced at the end of 2022, the best-seller continues its success story and fills the big shoes worthily.
00:38As part of our first impression, we were able to experience the BMW X1 XDrive 23i U11 with M Sport Package and the elegant paintwork in Stormbay Metallic on Bavarian roads.
00:49The new BMW X1 U11 presents itself with a more angular look, a kidney grille that stands vertically in the wind and fine details such as the three-dimensionally shaped tail lights and the flush-mounted door handles, which give it a self-confident and modern appearance.
01:06Compared to other current UKL models, it also presents itself with a decidedly independent appearance.
01:16Despite only being slightly larger than its predecessor 53mm longer and 44mm higher, the new X1's interior feels spacious, even without a direct comparison.
01:25The existing space in the vehicle has been retained, while the new curved display and iDrive 8 give the cockpit a much fresher and more modern look.
01:36High-quality materials such as the dashboard with its decorative stitching and the elegant patterns of the aluminum covers for the speakers of the optional Hammond-Cardon sound system demonstrate the developer's attention to detail.
01:54Particularly striking is the larger and more aesthetically pleasing curved display, which is perceived as a significant improvement when switching from the previous X1.
02:02Users coming from models such as the i4, the 3-series facelift or the iX might find the display relatively small.
02:13However, for those switching from the old X1, the new display combination not only offers a visual upgrade, but also a significantly larger display area.
02:23One point of criticism remains the omission of the iDrive controller, which many X1 drivers and BMW customers and other model series have become accustomed to over the years.
02:32As in the active Torer Uno 6, the rotary push-button controller has been removed from the new BMW X1, as the developers believe that operation via fewer buttons, a large touch screen and voice control is sufficient.
02:48In the first few days, the right hand may find itself reaching into empty space more often, as the familiar and very practical input option while driving is no longer available.
02:57However, it is worth highlighting that, unlike the active Torer, the X1 offers a real head-up display that projects information directly into the driver's field of vision.
03:11Many BMW customers consider this feature to be extremely helpful and could at least partially compensate for the missing iDrive controller.
03:18In addition, the augmented view in the navigation system makes it easier to park and exit as well as to find your way around complex intersections by superimposing directional arrows on the image from the front camera.
03:33This makes entrances and exits clearly visible.
03:35The further development of the third generation is also evident in the boot volume, which has been increased by 50L to 540L.
03:48The standard 40 and 20 to 40 split rear bench seat with cargo function allows the backrest to be locked at various angles and enables versatile use of the luggage compartment.
03:57The rear bench seat can be optionally moved lengthwise by up to 13 cm, which creates more space either in the rear or in the luggage compartment.
04:09The standard electrically opening and closing tailgate considerably increases convenience when loading and unloading.
04:17In conjunction with the optional comfort access, a simple foot movement under the rear apron is enough to open or close the tailgate automatically.
04:24On the country roads around the Regensburg production site, the new BMW X1 X-Drive 23i with its 218 horsepower from the four-cylinder petrol engine proves to be particularly dynamic.
04:38The engine is supported by the second-generation 48-volt onboard power supply and impresses with its fast response and large power reserves.
04:45The electric motor with 14 kW or 19 horsepower integrated into the housing of the C-Vane dual-clutch transmission is barely noticeable,
04:55but objectively contributes significantly to the superiority of the most powerful petrol engine, apart from the BMW X1 M35i.
05:02The new X1 masters winding roads even better than its predecessor.
05:12With a track width that has been increased by 31 mm at the front and rear, it offers significantly more stable road holding.
05:19The adaptive M-sport suspension, which has been lowered by 15 mm, and the sports steering provide additional support for ambitious drivers.
05:30Despite these sporty improvements, however, the BMW X1 is not a genuine sports car.
05:36At the limit, the focus is more on safety than on maximum dynamics.
05:39A concept that is well-suited to the target group, which appreciates the high seating position and the associated clarity.
05:50Another important aspect for many customers are the new seats, which can be optionally equipped with a massage function, thus further increasing comfort.
05:58In addition, numerous assistance systems such as the parking assistant, lane change assistant, reversing assistant, and trailer assistant make driving more relaxing and safer.
06:10These systems significantly increase safety in road traffic.
06:14However, anyone who wants to experience all the functions of the new X1 should be prepared for higher costs.
06:20The price can quickly rise above €60,000, especially for well-equipped and powerful models such as our test car.
06:29By way of comparison, the base price of the X1 S Drive 8 with front-wheel drive starts at €41,400.
06:37Overall, the new BMW X1 U11 delivers a convincing overall impression, clearly outperforming its successful predecessor in the categories relevant to its segments such as design, comfort, performance, and versatility.
06:50However, there are legitimate points of criticism, such as the elimination of the iDrive controller, which has been met with displeasure by both the trade press and long-standing customers.
07:01The fact that competitors such as the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA also no longer offer a rotary push-button controller is of little consolation to fans of the iDrive system.
