Concerning? Is Ninko worried about the running game in tough conditions? QB out-rushing RBs an issue? Trade not needed- But fix the run game.
Transcript
00:00You were telling me the other night that you do have a concern headed into the second half of the NFL season.
00:07Just running the ball consistently, rushing when you have to run the ball, four-minute offense.
00:13If it's a nasty game, say you have a rainy, cold, fall New England, which we're going to have one of those.
00:19This past weekend was beautiful, sunny, awesome.
00:22But at some point, you're going to have to run the ball with your running backs.
00:25And right now, Drake May has 250 yards rushing, and Stevenson has 279 yards rushing.
00:31So that is not great.
00:35You don't want your quarterback to have as much as your number one running back.
00:39That just goes to show you that the quarterback, yes, he's getting out of situations and using his legs.
00:46But you're also relying on him to scramble for first downs instead of running the ball.
00:50Do you put that more on the running backs, on the offensive coordinator, on the line?
00:57Well, running the ball, it's a group effort.
01:00So you have your offensive line.
01:02Obviously, they're executing what the play is.
01:04But your running back has to see it.
01:05We talked about this before.
01:07The running back and everybody have to work together, and they have to see it.
01:10And also, you have to take care of the football.
01:12So do you have less confidence now that you've seen some of the fumbles like we did versus the Steelers?
01:18I know Vrabel has talked about still needing Stevenson and still having to rely on him, and he's got to stay here.
01:23And you're going to need him.
01:25So at some point in the future, say you're in a field goal game where you have to control the time of possession,
01:34you just can't march down the field and throw, throw, throw, and give the other team a chance to tie the game or win the game.
01:39You have to run the ball, win the time of possession, and how you do that is through the ground, the running game.
01:46So then where do you put running backs on needs for trade deadline?
01:48No, I wouldn't think it's a need that they need to go and get more running backs.
01:52I think they just need to continue to work on the running game as a whole, keep doing all your – in practice, you can't do it now.
01:59But before, we used to be able to do running game, nine-on-seven.
02:03We used to team run, right?
02:05You remember that.
02:06Oh, yeah.
02:06It's illegal now.
02:07You can't do team run anymore.
02:09So just work on Ramondre and trade deadline.
02:11You work on the team running it, but you don't have a defense in front of you.
02:15Well, even Vrabel said it too.
02:16You could do team run.
02:18You could run all your run plays during team, but you just can't do the specific nine-on-seven, half lines.
02:26You can't do that now.
02:27Even Vrabel said it because I had asked him about that on Monday.
02:30I was like, the running game looked better.
02:32And then he was like, well, minus the 50 yards of Drake made.
02:35But kind of to go to – and I know Shyam loves this world because he's an all-22 guy.
02:40You're right.
02:41It is different phases.
02:42There was a run where it got blown up in the backfield, and it was because the center Bradbury literally got walked back into the running back's lap.
02:51So that's on the O-line.
02:53And then there's runs where you win the line of scrimmage, and then the running back is not hitting it through the hole.
02:59It's timing too.
03:00Yeah.
03:00You got to know it's not cutting back side.
03:03So I always look at it.
03:04If there's a lot of TFLs, then that tells me maybe the O-line is getting beat at the line of scrimmage.
03:11And that could be more on the offensive linemen unless they just free guys running through gaps.
03:16So you also have your scheme runs and your zone runs.
03:19So there's teams that they're specifically a zone-running team, and then there's teams that are scheme and gap-running teams.
03:26So they come up with specific plays against whatever defense you're facing to attack.
03:32So a zone-running team, they're just – everyone's flowing one way, and the running back is taught to push it to the edge and then find the hole and get north and south.
03:43That's defeated by a good edge guy.
03:45So you set the edge, everyone will stack up the firewood, there is no cutback, and everyone on the backside makes the play.
03:53So I would assume that this team, because they're not really built like a zone-running team, they're a scheme-running team.
03:57And I don't think Josh is a zone-running guy.
04:00Sometimes, maybe, yes, there's a time and a place for that.
04:03But scheme runs, you also have to have the personnel.
04:07You know, do they go get a fullback?
04:09Probably not.
04:10You know, they're using the tight ends now kind of as fullbacks.
04:13So there's not really a fullback position except for the Ravens.
04:16I think they have the only fullback in the league right now.
04:18And it seems like the one play where they do make some yards, and I know Shyam loved it, was the toss play.
04:24So now the toss is about making sure you get that edge and you get a guy like Travion Henderson outside to use his ability.
04:31So that's about cutting the defense in half and let's get out.
04:33Let's outflank everybody.
04:35So, you know, it seems like they like that run or it's been successful, whether it's a toss or a little flip play.
04:40Well, and Rob, last week, too, in the NFL, across the board, there was a massive leap in, like, jumbo packages.
04:46Do you expect the Patriots to utilize any of those going forward at all?
04:49Yeah, I mean, you could do that.
04:50So you bring an extra offensive lineman in and you, you know, declare him as a tight end eligible.
04:54So you're just trying to get a little more weight on the field.
04:58And as a whole, the defenses across the board are lighter, right?
05:02So your defensive ends are a little bit lighter.
05:05Your linebackers, your inside backers are 220 to 230.
05:08They used to be 250 to 260.
05:10So you have more speed on the field defensively now in the NFL, but you also have taken off a true blocking tight end.
05:19There's not really true blocking tight ends.
05:20There's not fullbacks that are just specifically there to run up and knock someone's face off.
05:26Like, it's just a completely different game.
05:27So if you bring in a heavy guy defensively, you have a package for that.
05:32So they bring in a heavy guy.
05:33Hey, we're bringing in our hippo unit, you know?
05:35So we're bringing in our fat guy, too.
05:37Right.
05:37So it's, you know, it's always a chess match.
05:39And then, you know, like, oh, that team's probably not throwing the ball out of this personnel group in hand.
05:43It's like, all right, basically, all right, here comes the run.
05:46Speaking of around the NFL, we had a lively discussion on the show yesterday
05:49about the Indianapolis Colts and their owner.
05:52I think it's awesome.
05:54Okay.
05:54I think it's awesome.
05:55So in any situation, if you ask why you should understand it, why are we doing this?
06:03You should understand it and have more of an understanding than just someone telling you,
06:07oh, it's going to work.
06:07Don't worry about it.
06:08Oh, this guy's doing the right thing.
06:10But if you actually know what's going on and you say, all right, well, that doesn't make sense.
06:14You can ask more in-depth questions.
06:16So I think it's great that she's in there learning and trying to ask questions.
06:22And because there's also times where our coach could throw a player under the bus and be like,
06:25well, he didn't do what I told him to do.
06:27And you could say, well, that was a stupid call.
06:30Like, yeah, it was just a bad call.
06:33And when you have more of an understanding of what's going on, you have the ability to make better decisions.
06:39Did you experience that kind of thing here when you were playing for the Patriots?
06:43I mean, there's always going to be – the ownership is always involved.
06:46They own the team.
06:48We're in on meetings with Bill.
06:49It's different when you have – I don't think I've ever seen an owner with a headset on and writing notes down.
06:54But, you know, that's kind of a first, right?
06:57So good for her for wanting to do that.
07:00But I think that that's – if you look around the league, there's owners that are present that are on the sideline that are at practice that are in the facility in the meetings.
07:09But they don't, you know, they don't have their headset on.
07:11And I think it's a changing, too, of the ownership god a little bit where some of the younger – and when I say younger, I mean we always think of the owner being the 80-year-old dinosaur who's owned the team forever.
07:24But even look at, like, Woody Johnson.
07:26He gets information from his kid who plays Madden.
07:28Like, you know, I feel like there's, like – there's this younger god who of, like, yo, oh, my dad's a billionaire and owns a team.
07:35Isn't that why they got rid of Aaron Rodgers?
07:37Because of his Madden score and the kid told him.
07:40Yeah.
07:40Get rid of him, dad.
07:42Right.
07:42I don't like him.
07:43Daddy, get rid of Aaron Rodgers.
07:45And, Greg, I understand, but I think that's kind of what ownership is like.
07:49A lot of these older owners, you know, their kids are more involved.
07:53And it seems like Ursa's daughter wants to be more involved.
07:55Hey, Shad Khan is in the locker room all the time.
07:58Going to go on forever.
08:03Oh, that's funny.
08:03I mean, players, I would think in most cases, just kind of turn their head and mumble when something like that is going on.
08:09Honestly, I don't think so.
08:11If you saw what Gilmore said about it, like, she's involved.
08:15It's not – I don't think you would turn your head and be like, why is she here?
08:19I don't think that at all.
08:20I would personally be like, all right, that's pretty cool.
08:22She's respecting what we're doing.
08:24She's trying to learn.
08:25She's trying to make us better versus, you know, you have some owners that you never see.
08:29Right.
08:30You know, like when I was in Miami, I don't think I ever saw the owner.
08:32Ever.
08:33Right.
08:33Ever.
08:34It also seems like she's not inserting herself and she's not trying –
08:37No, she's observing.
08:38Right.
08:38So, like, I'm more nervous for the observer than the guy that's actually, you know, involved in asking and saying stuff.
08:44The observer, you're like, okay.
08:47That's like Parcells.
08:48Parcells was a very big observer.
08:51He would just pop up and be there just watching you and then you'd be like, oh, man.
08:55What's he doing?
08:56What's he doing over there?
08:57Yeah.
08:58Taking mental notes?
08:59Was he looking at me?
08:59Cut that guy.
09:00Cut that guy.
09:01Right.
09:01Cut that guy.
09:02You know?
09:03But I think it was that kid from Eastie that won't stop talking.
09:06Yeah.
09:06Well, you know what?
09:07Listen, Parcells gave me my chance, so I will never knock that man.
09:10But he would be – he was known to just sneak into the room and you'd be in there with your feet up and be like, oh, damn it.
09:18I should have had my feet on the ground.
09:20I shouldn't have been relaxing here.
09:21I should have been more attentive.
09:22But I like an owner who wants to see, like, or who's willing to be like, all right, we need to have a better, you know, locker room facilities, a better training staff facilities, bring in, like, you know, what can we do?
09:35Because I feel like I would do that as an owner.
09:37What can I do to help my team be better?
09:42Right?
09:42Whether it's – you know, we sit here and we talk about the grades every year for facilities, travel, this, that, and we criticize the Patriots when we see a bad grade.
09:52So if you're an owner, you want to make sure that you have good grades for all those things and your players enjoy coming to work every day.
10:00She also might – I mean, I don't think might.
10:03She's probably emotionally attached to the owner, to that position.
10:06Her dad just passed away.
10:08She wants to do well.
10:09She wants – she's also a female in that position where more eyes are on you.
10:13So she's probably deciding for herself, hey, I'm going to make sure that I do the best that I can, take advantage of the situation, make my dad proud,
10:21and make this team the best it can be and get to a Super Bowl and do something that he'd be proud of me for.
10:27And make sure that I'm informed.
10:28Informed.
10:28Yeah.
10:29And not just having the wool pulled over my eyes.
10:30We asked Boomer this on Monday, your top three teams in the AFC right now.
10:36Top three teams in the AFC.
10:37So I don't love Kansas City, but – and I know their record isn't the best, but when I'm watching them play, they're very annoying.
10:51So they're on my three.
10:53I'm not going to give you a one, two, or three.
10:54Because they're just going to be there.
10:55They're just going to be there.
10:56So they could be a team that might just barely get there.
10:59But once they're in the playoffs, once they're in the playoffs, you're like, why did they beat us at home?
11:03Yeah.
11:04So they're in there.
11:05The Pats are in there.
11:07And the Bills are in there.
11:08Oh, okay.
11:09Over the Colts.
11:10The Colts are probably – they're like –
11:15Denver, you got Denver.
11:16No, no.
11:16I got my top because the Colts scare me because they can run the ball.
11:19They can win the time of possession.
11:20That's what you have a problem with, especially in a bad weather game.
11:23And I know they're a dome team, but if you have to go to Indiana, I know it's a tough place to play,
11:28and they're running the ball, you might have a limited amount of series to go score.
11:32And they pump the crowd noise.
11:33And they do pump.
11:34I've been the RCA dome.
11:36So I'd say that my top three, four would be the Colts.
11:38They're up there.
11:39Three is a tough number to try and get the top in.
11:43Ravens getting Lamar back this week, third, tomorrow night.
11:47I don't think that –
11:48So you have a mobile quarterback with something that makes him less mobile.
11:52Right.
11:52The hamstring.
11:53The hamstring injury.
11:54Okay, he's a mobile quarterback that's in the pocket.
11:58I don't think that's a great combination.
12:01And their defense stinks.
12:03I don't know.
12:03Their defense is dealing with a ton of injuries.
12:05I mean, they're just – they're not – like I said three weeks ago,
12:08there's teams that we thought were going to be better than they were.
12:10There's teams that are better than we actually gave them credit for.
12:13So we have a whole NFL now where you look at the Colts, you're like –
12:17honestly, I forgot about them because I haven't really thought about them.
12:20But there's six and what?
12:21Seven and one.
12:22Seven and one.
12:23Seven and one.
12:23They got the best record going right now.
12:25So you got to respect that.
12:27And I think that they're able to do that through physical football, running the ball.
12:32They have a great front.
12:34You know, their offensive line is really physical.
12:35So you're going to have to come into a situation.
12:38If you have to play that team, you better buckle up because you know they're going to run the football.
12:42And they're decent.
12:44But Kansas City's defense is good.
12:46So that's why they scammed me.
12:47You know, because if you can have a good defense, and we've seen it with a guy like Brady before.
12:52Like if you have Mahomes and you have a good defense, that is a recipe for basically them destroying the league.
13:00Because if you can't get it going on offense, you know, sooner or later, Mahomes.
13:04Like I was watching the game the other night, and the touchdown he threw to hunt in the end zone where he's running around, running around, running around, running, extends the play, extends the play.
13:13And then boom.
13:14Like that's what he's going to be able to do.
13:16And you put him with a good defense, that Kansas City always worries me.
13:19There's teams where you count the number of series you potentially have for the game, and you know if we don't score on three or four of these series, and they kick a field goal, we lose.
13:30Right.
13:30So they're an offense where they're going to move the ball down the field.
13:35Your defense has to just not let them score touchdowns.
13:38Right.
13:38Drive down the field, score, kick a field goal.
13:41Do not score a touchdown.
13:43And hopefully, and that's what we did with Brady.
13:45All right, we play a good team like Denver.
13:47We play a great team like the Ravens, back when the Ravens were the Ravens.
13:53Okay, if they drive the ball to the 30 and hold them to a field goal, I'm betting that Tom is going to get us in the end zone.
14:00So you got four or five series like that, that's what you want.
14:03We win the game.
14:04So it's more of like that bend but don't break mentality when you're playing a good offense like that.
14:08All right, before you go, since you brought it up, do we get first contact with those from outer space?
14:13I don't listen.
14:13Listen, this is not, it's not, I don't, I don't believe in it.
14:18You don't believe in aliens?
14:19No.
14:19All right.
14:19I don't.
14:20Because listen, the second they do get here, how arrogant.
14:24How arrogant.
14:25We're all vaporized, by the way.
14:27They're not coming.
14:28Oh, they're coming in peace?
14:29They could.
14:29Why not?
14:30They're not.
14:31They're not.
14:31They're coming to take our resources.
14:33So like you better strap up and get ready.
14:34Or they're going to teach us a thing or two.
14:36Avi Loeb seems very, uh, not too worried about them coming.
14:40Just that everything's going to change.
14:42Nothing is good about a foreign person from another, not even a part of an alien.
14:46But they might have already been here before Robin helped build the pyramid.
14:49But if there's so much more intelligence.
14:51How are we going to handle this?
14:51Well, what happened back then?
14:52We don't know.
14:53Right.
14:53So there could have been some crazy experiments going on.
14:56Shouldn't we have air traffic controllers now more than ever?
14:59Yes.
15:00But Robin.
15:01Stop the government shutdown.
15:02If they're so much more intelligent than us, what can we give them that they want from us?
15:07Good point.
15:07Nothing.
15:08Right.
15:08That's why we won't be here.
15:09They'll just take our water.
15:11They want our manual labor.
15:13They're so much more intelligent.
15:15They probably want to enslave us.
15:17Okay.
15:17What are you much more intelligent than?
15:19Have you not seen America?
15:21No one likes to work.
15:22You really think there's going to be people out there doing manual labeling for aliens?
15:26Listen, when you see a little ant or a spider going, you're much more intelligent than that
15:31thing, right?
15:32And you're like, you just stomp on it.
15:34So you don't want it around.
15:35So you think they view us as ants?
15:35Yes.
15:36If they get here and they're that much more intelligent than us, we are little ants.
15:40We're not even comparable.
15:41I don't think they're more intelligent than us.
15:43I don't believe they exist, but if they did, they came from how far away, they're more
15:47intelligent.
15:48Or they're the Amazonian women who are coming to take all of you guys.
15:52Or you go get your glass of water, like remember signs?
15:53And we just start surrounding ourselves with cups of water.
15:56Just build a moat.
15:57And how did sign ends?
15:58Oh, yeah, that's right.
15:59They hit an alien all the way they had with a baseball bat.
16:01No, they dumped water on it.
16:03They couldn't get fresh water on it.
16:06Pretty good movie, though.
16:06Hopefully they don't like oxygen, okay?
16:08One of the most terrifying scenes in a movie ever, when that alien clawfoot thing comes
16:13out the door, where the kid is at home.
16:16In the basement, like the basement area?
16:17Yes, yes.
16:18Whoa!
16:18That's terrifying.
16:19You're like, oh, no.
16:20So we should be worried about people, if you throw water on them, that it's going to affect
16:24them.
16:25You don't want to be the one like, we come in peace.
16:27Have you seen, remember, what's that movie with the space?
16:30It's hilarious.
16:31Independence Day?
16:32No, no, no, no.
16:34Baseball?
16:34No, it's like the guys with the glass helmets on.
16:38And it's, what the heck is that?
16:41Wait, is that three games to glory?
16:42Marvin the Martian?
16:43No, it's, they're coming out of the, the, the, they're coming out of the, oh, he's
16:48talking about our space and they're coming out and everyone's there.
16:51It's like the president's there.
16:52Mars attacks.
16:53Yes.
16:53Mars attacks.
16:54And they're like, we are here.
16:55Welcome.
16:56And they start vaporizing everybody.
16:58Or you could watch E.T.
16:59Oh, E.T.
16:59And have a completely different experience.
17:01Elliot.
17:03Yes.
17:03Elliot.
17:04All right.
17:04So he's, we better make sure our daisies and flowers are looking good.
17:08Yeah.
17:08So the aliens don't.
17:10I feel like Adam Silver has already won.
17:12Elliot.
