00:30People will like the film. The music had already rocked since we promoted the film for 8 weeks and the title song is a chart buster, Kafara, Mera Hua, Dil Dil Dil, Hum Tere, Hum Bas Tere, all the songs have just rocked and really it's you know I think along with Sayara this is one of the albums of the year, music albums of the year.
00:51But were you afraid, like you just named Sayara, the film released, the undertones are almost the same. Was there like a point of stress somewhere, same undertones where people may or may not like it?
01:04No see Sayara is a very different film from ours. Sayara in fact is a film with a happy ending you know and also if you look at this year you know this year the audience has shown us that they want intense love stories.
01:17It started with a re-release of Laila Majnu which did very well in re-release.
01:21Then it started with a re-release of the historic Saram Theri Gassam harshest film which broke every record ever for a re-release in India.
01:29Okay and then came Sayara which I think is a historic blockbuster.
01:33Right it's I mean a film with newcomers to do 340-350 crores net in India is ridiculously mind-blowing.
01:41So we had that confidence that you know audiences this year are choosing this genre.
01:46They want this genre.
01:47They are, they are, they are, they are, they are, kya kete,
01:49Dil toote wa aashikho ki bheed laghi hai.
01:52Aur humko no we have to target that.
01:54And now after Diwaniyat's success, I mean next month we again have Tere Ish mein.
02:01You know Anandil Rai sir's, Bhushan Kumar sir's film with Dhanush and with Kreeti.
02:06That's looking extraordinary too.
02:08And I feel that will also work wonders.
02:10So this genre I think there was a dearth of this genre.
02:14Ek kami thi.
02:15Aur humko kami I think is saal puri ho gahi.
02:18As a filmmaker you constantly like whenever you're making a film you constantly gaze the audience's attention.
02:25You want to know what they want to watch.
02:26With a new generation coming in who are, jinko ab samajhi nahi sakte.
02:31How do you make a film for them?
02:32Well, dekhyeh, generations toh badalte rehte.
02:37Aur har film maker ka kaam hai that you adapt to the times.
02:41Aur in fact, yeh jo film hai, Ek Diwani ki Diwaniyat mein.
02:45Mainne pehle bhi ka hai ke, yeh jo genre hai, yeh genre nahi nahi hai.
02:49But tab, many many years back before Amitabachan sir did Zanzir,
02:53he did a film called Parwana which where he played an obsessive lover.
02:58You know, then there was Dhar, there was Anjaya.
03:00You know, there's Kabir Singh where you've seen this kind of mad love and mad passion.
03:05And I think,
03:06Dhewaniyat toh har generation mein hoti hai.
03:10Mere dada mein rahi hogi, mere dad mein rahi hogi,
03:13mujh mein rahi hogi, mere beete mein hogi.
03:17Toh, Dhewaniyat toh aisi emotion hai,
03:19insaan ki jo matab,
03:21I don't think wo yug ya pidi ka mortaj hai.
03:24It's always gonna be there.
03:25It's always gonna remain.
03:26Also, I overheard an interview before me
03:28where you spoke about
03:30you sat at home for four years, I think,
03:33and nobody wanted to work with you.
03:34You've given back-to-back kids.
03:36It's not that you've not given good films.
03:38You've given good films.
03:39You've written good films.
03:40Why was that?
03:41Well, you know, it's, it's, I think,
03:43I know, I mean, I say this in a very simple, humble way.
03:47I don't blame anyone for that lean period of mine.
03:51I accept myself.
03:52You know, I made a film that didn't do well called Satyamir Jaiti 2.
03:55The business, economics didn't work.
03:58Film didn't work.
03:59Then it was, I think, just justified
04:00that people were wary of me
04:02because it was a film that had a lot of hope.
04:05Baut umi de thi logo ko us film se.
04:07And wo film jab nahi khari utri logo ki umido par
04:09to people were disillusioned by me.
04:11They thought, you know,
04:12I will not be able to pull it off again.
04:15And there was a period of three,
04:16three and a half years
04:17where I had very little work.
04:19I had, I never thought I'll see this day again
04:21where I'll be sitting in front of you
04:23and talking about a super hit film of mine
04:25as a director that's released.
04:27And there were tough times
04:28and I must say thank you to my wife Gauri,
04:32my son Mehan,
04:33my in-laws, my parents, my friends,
04:35Shad Randhawa,
04:36who's also in Ek Diarne Ki Diwaniyat,
04:38my best friend Izzaz Khatau,
04:39Ritesh Deshmukh,
04:41and Janelia who's always been some of my greatest strengths,
04:45the two of them.
04:47You know, they were always there for me
04:49and they helped me survive.
04:51They helped me fight.
04:53And today that this victory seems even sweeter
04:56because there was such a bitterness
04:58aftertaste of failure before this, you know.
05:00And I'm just grateful that I got the opportunity
05:04thanks to Harshvadhan, Rane, Sonam, Bajwa,
05:07Anshul Garg, Raghav, Sharma.
05:09And, you know, I got to make this movie.
05:12And today this film is Tarshvada Superhit
05:14racing towards a blockbuster
05:16and it feels great.
05:18So basically, you're going to be next driving you from the ashes.
05:21I know the amount of times I've risen from the ashes,
05:24people are telling me,
05:26you know, please can you stop getting reduced to ashes each time.
05:30You know, it happened earlier also
05:32when my first film, Jaane Ka Saai,
05:34Jaane Ka Saai, I didn't do well.
05:36I wrote, then I wrote Shooter Al Valala
05:38and, you know, I came back with Grand Masti
05:41and Shooter Al Valala
05:42and Ek Villeen and Mein Tera Hero as a writer.
05:47And then again, my film Masti Zhaade didn't work
05:49and I fought back with Satyamev Jaite
05:51and Mar Jawa.
05:53And then Satyamev Jaite 2 didn't work.
05:55And now I've touched wood, fought back with
05:57Ek Diwane Ki Diwaniyat
05:58and I have, you know, Masti 4 and Tera Yaru
06:01also lined up.
06:02And I hope this time,
06:04the phoenix remains in this avatar only.
06:07So like you just named a slew of films
06:10that you've written and directed.
06:11If you had to choose one milap,
06:14the writer milap or the director milap,
06:16which one would you choose and why?
06:17I would choose the director milap
06:19because the director milap gets to do everything.
06:21He gets to write also, he gets to direct also.
06:24He gets to do it all.
06:25So I would always choose direction over writing.
06:28So you've got a slew of films coming up.
06:31There's, of course, there's Masti,
06:33then there's Tera Yaru Maya.
06:34And then you've just locked another film,
06:36Dhogri.
06:38Dhogri as a writer.
06:39I'm the story screenplay dialogue writer of that film.
06:42So how does that feel?
06:43You've got a few films coming up.
06:44Yeah, it feels great.
06:45And there's hopefully another film with Anshul too.
06:48You know, a couple of things with him
06:50that we are planning.
06:51And I'm hoping everything works out well.
06:54I hope the love that, you know,
06:55Ek Diwane Ki Diwaniyat has got,
06:57I hope the other films also,
06:58which are coming up,
06:59they get the same love.
